without giving anything away cos it’s just implicit info, titan harding is more of a spectrum of durability

Great reaction !! 🔥 I’m happy you seem to enjoy the show a bit more lately despite the things that you’re confused about

Just fyi and to clear up some of the confusion : Reiner and Bertholt (as well as Sacha, Connie, Yimir, historia…) we’re not part of the Stohess mission to capture Annie. The events of the beginning of s2 (with the beast titan’s first appearance) are taking place almost at the same time as the Stohess Fiasco. Connie even says that he has to thank Annie for something in one the first episodes of s2 (so they didn’t even know Annie was the female Titan yet)

Regarding the idea that the plan sucked because someone would've had to have told Annie and Erwin wasn't counting on her having help - remember that Erwin announced the mission to all the recruits just before they chose to join scouts or not, and I believe Armin was surprised why he did that (as I recall he also lied and said the mission was to reclaim the outer wall with Eren's titan rather than state they're going to lure out a traitor). It was to confirm if a traitor was in the cadet corps like he believed, and to draw them out to the mission on his terms if that was the case. So if that wasn't the case, it's a win as you can reasonably assume the 104th cadet corps are not the traitors and it narrows the search. However if it was the case, then like how it happened (albeit not as well as Erwin hoped) you get the chance to unveil and potentially stop the traitor. The main flaw of the plan, was that they assumed this traitor and possible titan would have the same abilities and skill as Eren, which is a massive assumption and a huge bit of oversight. This is why the plan failed, in the end. So imo the plan was mostly quite smart and did suceed (though I know the debate on how many lives is it acceptable to lose is close to your heart), but the flaw in the plan was the final part of it, and that's where it unravels quite badly tbh.

Eren, Mikassa, Armin and Jean are the only people from the 104th cadet class who know anything about the events in Stohess.

They've completely forgotten that letters are a thing. Also, the idea is that if the titan shifters are underground and they titan up they would just be trapped. They only need to be wounded and have a desire to complete an objective. Eren struggled to transform because of his emotional connection to Annie. He didn't truly want to attack her. Also, most of the 104th trainees were not in on the Annie mission because they were under suspicion. Jean, Mikasa, Armin, and Eren were the only members of the 104th that had been cleared by Erwin to be in the know.

I don't think the wall thing is ever really explicitly explained in the show. But I think the most reasonable answer is that Annie's crystal cocoon hardening is akin to carbon in diamond form, and the walls are more like a weaker form of carbon (i.e. graphite.) It seems science is advanced enough here to understand that these are elementally the same substance, but maybe not to get too deep into molecular structure. Hange notes that they are "practically identical", which means they aren't totally identical. This implies that the hardness of Titan hardening can vary.

Ron C

Exactly. All the rookies from the scouts were kind of confined in buildings and not aware of the plans. You can take a peak back in episode 1 of s2, they say so in the dialogues.

I've always thought of the walls/crystal thing in terms of steel. There are different hardness from mild to tool steel. The walls are like mild steel, the armored titan and the crystal are hardened tool steel. Same same but different.

Nerdy is going to feel so vindicated about hating Erwin as this show goes further and further. If anything it's impressive that he predicted so early on what a shit commander the guy is.

David

Rainer, Berthold, Sasha and Connie were not part of capturing Annie. They were kept in a different place because they were under suspension. In fact the whole time the Annie vs Eren fought inside the walls is when they were running away from titans without the Odm gear remember

nerdynightly

That is true. We know who the other spies are, so we have the benefit of knowing Erwin benched the right people, but he couldn't have. Maybe it all does make sense, and I'm just not seeing it, but as presented it sin't working for me and I want it to. Erwins death toll, and ramshackle strategies are the only things in the show that aren't working for me right now 🤷🏼‍♂️

The people isolated are all the remaining survey corps members who were part of the 104th cadet corp. Since two of them had already turned out to be Titans, it makes sense to be wary of the rest and especially to exclude them from the operation to capture Annie. They know that someone was feeding Annie intel from the survey corps, so the most likely place to look would be her comrades from training. They didn't specifically know it was Reiner and Bertholdt at that point, which is why the rest of the cadets were all there as well while they attempted to capture Annie and gather the Intel that they ended up getting which led them to conclude it was Reiner and Bertholdt.

David

Totally respect where you coming from. I myself watching for the first time don’t remember being able to catch on to everything. Also think of the walls as a very thin layer of Annie’s crystal. Annie crystal is made of the same material but is more compacted and stronger. Love your reactions! Believe me, this show delivers in the end. You are aloud to be confused and have questions, it’s just that most won’t be answered when you want it. However, when your questions get answered you may enjoy the way decided to tell its story. Attack on Titan doesn’t have plot holes and I mean it. Maybe when the shoe fully ends you may agree with with me. Love you guys!

Just fyi, This whole season basically happens in 1.5 days, this squad of Reiner, bertholt, Sasha, Connie, ymir, historia and etc missed the Annie fight, the Annie reveal and the Titans in the wall, they are completely in the dark because if you remember the scouts was called for questioning after the failed expedition and the scouts were told to give back eren in wall Sina, that’s why a select few scouts (like Jean, armin and mikasa) were with eren, Erwin and levi were in wall Sina. So right now the other squad are in questioning that’s why they don’t have any odm gear with them and they are far away from Erwin and eren. And if u remember when Annie was getting revealed this squad of Sasha Reiner and all weren’t with them in the room so they don’t know that Annie was the female titan and that erwin and the scouts knows about it! At first I didn’t pick up these stuffs until I rewatched and I understood it properly. Also I understand that u feel like Erwin’s death toll doesn’t allow you to appreciate his character and that you are stubborn on your opinion that “i hate Erwin” so u feel like u have to cherry pick everything and put it on Erwin somehow but all the events does make sense and it’s just more of a you problem than anything else, I hope you can eventually get behind his character.

y'all are looking too far into the realism side of things in a show with gaint naked babies that eat people?
