A fully loaded Airbus A340 carrying nearly 300 passengers and crew, speeds down the runway on takeoff from Melbourne, Australia. The the end of the runway is fast approaching, but no matter how hard the first officer pulls on his controls, his plane won’t lift off. Its tail scrapes along the ground violently, sending sparks flying. Passengers are horrified as a haunting red glow fills the cabin. Will they make it into the air before it’s too late, or will they come crashing off the end of the runway, in what would be the worst air accident in Australia’s history? This is the terrifying story of Emirates flight 407, and it’s a story that has very little to do with runways and engines, and everything to do with human psychology.
