It was inspired by the true story of Elisabeth Fritzl. Elisabeth was kidnapped by her father when she was 18 and held hostage in the basement of her parents' home for 24 years. She gave birth to 7 children, 3 of whom survived. Her father was an effing monster.

I am so glad you thought this movie was incredible. It is one of my favorite movies, and it always makes me cry, even though I have probably seen it like 20+ times. It’s an odd choice for a favorite movie because it is so sad, but it is just written, acted and filmed so well. Brie Larson did win the Oscar for her performance in Room! Jacob Trembley won the Critics Choice award that year as well! (An adorable speech if anyone wants to check it out) https://youtu.be/sjjf_rrCq7Q Both were impeccable. This film has some of the best acting I have ever seen. It is so raw and real. And the chemistry between Brie and Jacob is so genuine and sweet. Jacob is all grown up now. To answer your question: I think Joy’s father wouldn’t look at Jack because he was a product of rape. So acknowledging Jack would be like acknowledging that his daughter went through the trauma she did to have him.

That's the only thing I wish had been expanded on a little bit

I read this book widen it was first released and just sobbed through most of it and ran to the theaters on release day. Such incredible writing and everyone involved in the film was outstanding.
