I’m really glad that you’re getting into this show 💙

Siobhan Linehan

Such a fun two parter this one. The Slitheen are hilarious with their farting. 😂 I'm glad you're enjoying the show. Also when Rose called The Doctor "gay" that wasn't about sexuality, it's a thing us British people say when someone or something is silly or weird. It's hard to explain but it's not meant as an insult in any way. And a "top-up card" is a card that goes in your phone. Here in Britain we have two different ways to pay to use a phone. There are contracts which are paid yearly or monthly, or there's pay as you go. And for pay as you go you get a card that goes in your phone and you put a certain amount of money on the card for phone calls and when that runs out you have to go back to the phone shop and top up the card with more money. I hope that makes sense, but yeah that's what that was about. And lastly, the words "bad wolf" that were spray painted on to the TARDIS are very important. In the previous episode, the psychic maid girl Gwyneth said it too when she read Rose's mind if you remember. In every episode this season, the words "bad wolf" are either said or written somewhere or shown in the background. Look out for them because they do mean something and they are there for a reason. 👀 During every season of the show there's a mystery woven throughout the individual episodes that gets revealed at the end.

Your last paragraph feels a bit spoilery. It's better to let people work it out for themselves 😉 I know you sponsored it so it's your call, but Travis doesn't like spoilers lol.

I don't think it's a spoiler. I'm not telling him what the words mean, just telling him to look out for them. The words are right there on the TARDIS in this episode and he noticed them so I don't think that telling him to look out for them in upcoming episodes is spoilery at all. From people I've watched with before, they've appreciated me telling them to look out for the words because it makes the mystery more interesting.

I completely forgot about the "you're so gay" line. As a gay man who is originally from the UK I can say that the phrase is offensive today, but wasn't back then. It was used in the way someone might say "don't be a pussy." Russel T Davies was the head writer/showrunner at this time, and actually wrote this episode, and he himself is gay. Actually he is the creator of the original Queer as Folk as well as some others big British LGBTQ shows like cucumber, banana, and it's a sin, and has done a lot for the British LGBTQ community.

British Prime Ministers don't have a term. There is usually an election every 5 years, but technically speaking you are voting for a party, not a person. It just so happens that the leader of the party becomes the PM. Margaret Thatcher had one of the longest runs in modern history at just shy of 12 years in #10 (Downing St), by comparison Liz Truss was only in office for 49 days.

Chris Eccleston would have been 41 at the time of filming. The time lord is 900. I mean even back in America in the 00's I remember people used 'gay' for whatever they wanted. I don't know that it was just a British thing. We have to remember this show aired in 2005. It doesn't make it any better, but it does explain why it was there. I bloody love Harriet Jones MP (Member of Parliament) I forget, we take for granted that we are so used to hearing these terms, but absolutely happy to define anything! I love that the doctor gives Rose a TARDIS key just so blasé like it is no big deal. UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) is such a cool-sounding name.. "Take me to your leader" I love when the doctor does silly shit like this. So the UK similar to Australia doesn't have set elections. They can be called for by the Prime Minister anytime within a 5-year period. But they have to have one every 5 years.

This episode was definitely weird but it was still pretty good

Yeah, so the word "gay" has had many meanings throughout the years (and countries). It used to mean "happy" for one thing. Honestly, this is where the show started to lose me for a little bit, but I think that was because I still wasn't used to the humor. Now that I'm used to the humor, I liked this episode better this time around. Mickey trying to catch the TARDIS and running straight into the wall behind it was hilarious (certainly got the biggest laugh of the episode out of you, lol). The Doctor being 900 years old is a fun little tidbit we learn in this episode. I wonder how he would measure that, though, since he's a time traveler? Also, he's an alien, so, whatever planet he was from (unless it has exactly the same orbit and spin that earth has) would have different values for a day and a year. But now I'm overthinking a TV show, lol. Either way, I'm glad you're enjoying the show!

They do explain more and more about The Doctor's age and planet as the seasons go on. So your questions will be answered. 🙂
