This week at TimeGhost we are getting through another one of our shooting weeks in Bavaria. A lot of this session has been spent on getting the D-Day series ready for shooting, much of which is going to happen in Normandy already in May and June of this year. If you happen to be in the area, drop us a line on Patreon. We're keeping an eye on the situation and are exploring the possibilities of a good old fashioned fan meetup (no promises, but we're looking into it).

Enjoy the show!

180 - Guadalcanal, A New Offensive - WW2 - February 5, 1943

This week sees the 10th anniversary of Hitler's ascension to power in Germany, but while there may be celebrations and speeches in Germany, the Battle of Stalingrad comes to its end with the surrender of the German 6th Army. The Soviets are on the move all over, launching yet more winter offensives. It is the Axis who are attacking in Tunisia, and in the Solomon Islands... well, the Allies aren't sure what the Japanese are up to. Agreed - the Pacific war was not a sideshow.

Thank you for this week’s episode! Looks like the North African front is about to heat up again soon…

Excellent show for my first week as a TG member. Stalingrad and Guadalcanal battles are finally over. Well done

The importance of the Guadalcanal Operation in the context of the Second World War reminds me of the importance the Spanish campaign played in the Second Punic War by forcing the Carthaginians to send reinforcements to Spain rather than to Hannibal in Italy.

I agree with you about the importance of Guadalcanal, but I don't think you are giving the Doolittle Raid enough credit. I think that, followed by Midway, precluded any more significant Japanese operations in the Indian Ocean.

I appreciate the explanation on the significance of Guadalcanal. Much has been written about the waste of that campaign.

I get an error message when I try to play this.

That was a really good insight of Guadalcanal. I was beginning to appreciate how massive a scale the war was in Russia compared to the Desert and Guadalcanal conflicts. You really put things into a more global perspective how Guadalcanal was important. I love these weekly shows, I don’t think I’ve ever been better informed of WWII with (all) the shows you all do. I’ve increased my subscription to help you help me become much better informed on this period of history, especially with alongside all your other shows. Perhaps more adding more ‘routine’ stuff, convoy losses/people lost, bombing raids/damage done would help as well.

This is the first time I've seen the connection between Germany and Japan's war aims explained. I had thought of campaigns by Japan in Siberia, but of course the Japanese had their hands full in China as far as land campaigns. The link with the Iranian supply line is now clear. Most weeks I enjoy the program but don't get new insights, just a lot of (good) detail. This week I really learned something new to me that brings the big picture together.

I assent, apart from the WAH the global view of World War 2 makes this youtube series unique, obviously Astrid and Anna are doing great unique stuff as well ;-). If anyone is interest Weinberg World At Arms is also a great book to learn about the global strategy. Complex but VERY good and one of my old schoolbooks!

That is a very very good point. There was much more to it than marching across the Alps which everyone knows. Thanks for sharing I never thought about that link :-)
