This week, the Germans once again advance deeper than into the Soviet Union than they ever had before. The German armored spearhead reaches the Volga river, and the outskirts of Stalingrad. These soldiers are now straddling the artery of the country they are invading. There is no way that we can see into the future, but seeing as Stalin has ordered that this city be fiercely defended it is very possible that this could become one of the bloodiest and most desperate battles either side has fought thus far.

As for the Japanese, more cracks continue to show in their war machine which just half a year ago seemed completely unstoppable. Following a catastrophic defeat at Guadalcanal, they now lose a key naval engagement to the United States.

It is clear that as this war approaches its fourth year, it is even more violent than ever before. There are now single battles that unfold on scales larger than entire campaigns in 1939-1940.

Any one know why the USS Houston (CA-30) was nicknamed the Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast? Any one know why the USS Enterprise (CV-6) got the nickname of the Grey Ghost?

Thank you for mentioning Milne bay and Kokoda. Both are extremely significant battles in Australian history. Certainly more important than the glorified failure at Gallipoli.

Great episode. It's becoming apparent that the Japanese have bitten off more than they can chew. Stalin should have evacuated the civilians from Stalingrad, or at least the women and children. He was evil.

He should have evacuated the civilians. They aren’t soldiers, and can easily be put to work behind the lines doing supply jobs and maintenance jobs, it also opens up every single building to be mini fortress.

Anonymous

Most definitely, he was evil. To Stalin, the deaths of millions of Russians was a matter of supreme indifference. He couldn't care less.

Not sure- CV6 was also called "The Big E". Houston was lost at the battle of the Sunda Strait early in the war, she won a presidential unit citation but I never heard the nickname. The USS Barb (SS 220) was called "The Galloping Ghost" and her legendary skipper, Eugene Fluckey ordered a shore party that blew up a train on the Japanese mainland.

No mention of the 1077th Anti-Aircraft Regiment. Hmmmm. It was a unit made up of mostly teenaged women. Quoting the official history, "The anti-aircraft troops first engaged the Panzers on August 23rd on the northern outskirts of the city. An attack from this quarter by the enemy had been unexpected, and so there were no rifle units in position to assist the batteries of the 1077th Anti-Aircraft Regiment in their defense against the strong concentration of German tanks and motorized infantry. Under the command of Colonel W. S. German, for two days the regiment fought alone and repelled the assaults of German submachine-gunners. During the combat, the regiment destroyed or damaged 83 tanks and 15 other vehicles carrying infantry, destroyed or dispersed over three battalions of assault infantry, and shot down 14 aircraft." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziH9fleTWQM

If you type in "the galloping ghost of the Java coast" you will get the USS Houston. The Japanese thought she was sunk many times (hence the name)...Enterprise got the nickname of the grey ghost because, again, the Japanese thought they sunk her many times. If you hear the word ghost, that means someone thought they sank it (the Houston finally sank near Java, and the Enterprise was just thought many times to have been sunk.

13:26 Yes, Bouganville is named after a Frenchman, but when administered by Australians, all names alter in pronunciation. The first syllable rhymes with 'toe', and the rest is pronounced "...GAN-vil".

Thank you for giving the Australian forces in New Guinea good focus this episode.

5 Brazilian merchant ships! That’s a lot. (I know…old joke)

Great episode. Love the fact that they are taking up more time now, with so much going on in different places. Keep up the good work, team, even if it is MORE work now. I hope army support ramps up too!

Theirs is my favourite story of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Indeed the scope of the War is expanding to ever greater and unprecedented levels. Truly a massive undertaking from the Time Ghost Army to take on WW2
