This week, Indy gives us a short overview of the history of US involvement in Afghanistan. Clearly this comes at a pretty topical time, which we only half planned, but had no idea it would be gripping headlines this much when it was scheduled to go up. So with that being said we hope this comes just in time for you!

Thank you for this video!

John Keegan remarked at the time of the invasion, "do these people not read history books?" Indi missed out Alexander, who was as successful as any other invader of the Stan.

Thanks Indy, really puts a clear picture of why we went there in the first place! Keep up these shorts so we can all learn from them. I fear for a future world religion war. Keep the information flowing!

Alexanders judgement at the time ... in a nutshell .... it's not worth it. Still stands today.

Indy should have mentioned the Great Game - the 19th Century version of the Cold War between Great Britain and the Russian Empire.

Thanks for this vid; it provides needed context. I will be sharing with close friends.

This whole affair was a national embarrassment and I am glad that Biden has finally ended it. I hope the next time that America engages in some foolhardy attempt at nation-building we include Women in the folks whom we give military training, they certainly have the most to fight for against a regime like the taliban.

D G Rossiter

So far so good but Indy did not explain how the US went from a limited operation to clear the Taliban harbouring Bin Laden to nation-building. Why not leave once Bin Laden has escaped? Let the Afghanis deal with the Taliban in their country.

I hope the next time Americans try it on they don’t feel the need to drag Australia and New Zealand into it. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq 1 Iraq 2 Afghanistan and anywhere else that we’ve put bodies in the ground for some American cause. Enough is enough, especially when all you hear is ignorant Americans proclaiming we always come running to America for help…..

Great episode, I hope it is followed up by others on Afghanistan and one in particular on the demise of UBL

Graveyard of empires? Don't think so. Afghanistan has been conquered and ruled multiple times and not all those empires (by a long shot) went down because of it. What is laughable is that the Americans got it into their heads that they could create a parliamentary democracy where family/clan ties are everything, the presence of Sunni Islam and neighbors like Iran, Russia, China and Pakistan. None of any of these things are compatible with democracy. I'm still astounded that the West thought it could modernize and change that place. It's a cesspit.

Good overview, Indy, but you left out one keep element. Who created and continues to fund the Taliban? I recommend you research Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

JM

Was it really a national embarrassment that we neutralized Al-Qaeda, kept the Taliban out of power, suppressed a destabilizing influence on nuclear-armed Pakistan, and gave a generation of Afghans a taste of freedom? Maybe it couldn't last for ever, but it wasn't nothing.

so WW 2 has been over for 76 years and we are still supporting and protecting europe from the russian hordes. We keep troops in Korea and Japan, we could have kept a force in Afghanistan as well. not a great duty station like, Germany, Japan or Italy, but we could have stayed for stability. Trump wantedto pull troops from Germany. couod have done that and there would be plenty of money to pay for Afghan ops.
