This week, both the Soviet and German forces continue attacks which were already underway, and start or plan new ones. The Soviets are able to strike fear into the hearts of German officers with an unexpectedly fierce attack around Kharkov, but Hitler is unshaken and orders his officers to continue their own offensives.

The Japanese are meanwhile preparing for a naval offensive which will almost entirely secure their control of the Pacific ocean and finish the task of destroying the US Pacific Fleet.  Though Japan is still a relatively powerful force, the US cryptographers are increasingly aware of how Japan plans to take control of the Pacific.

142 - Joseph Stalin Jumps the Gun - May 16, 1942

The Soviets pre-empt a German offensive with one of their own in the south of the Eastern Front, but that's not the only fighting. The skies over Malta and the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence are full of action. Meanwhile, two races against time - and the Japanese - come to an end in India. I thought the attack on Aleutian Islands was a feint designed to draw the carriers north and out of position so that when they reversed course to defend Midway they would be drawn into a Japanese trap.

I really hope that we get more on the Chinese retreat from Burma next week. We get the casualties among commonwealth forces but we haven't talked about the larger body of Chinese troops. It hasn't been emphasized that Stilwell went AWOL and abandoned his command. Maybe that will be next week and you'll talk about how CKS messed up by not firing Stilwell then and there.

The fear of the Japanese striking south towards Australia was real Down Under, but AFAIK there was no actual planning by the Japanese to do so.

I had no idea about the action in the Gulf of St Lawrence. What a truly world war

The Japanese Navy wanted to,but the Japanese Army wouldn’t provide the troops to conduct the invasion. The Army wanted to keep the troops in Manchuria in case the USSR collapsed.

I find Harold Alexander's comment, at 2:44, about the inevitable retaking of Burma, amusing, given it was said on the eve of his departure from Asia, never to return for the rest of the war; he might as well as said 'They shall return'? For my part, however, I have to say Slim chance of that ever happening.

Wow.. really excited to see the Midway fight soon. By the way, are you, team, planning a special for that?
