Hello TimeGhost Army!
Due to some technical problems with Patreon, we're a bit late with the posting of today's B2W: Zeitgeist! episode. We apologize for that, now we're finally here!

This season,
we look at two rising social trends which share many supporters: eugenics and birth control.

While not all advocates of birth control believe in the fictional science that is eugenics, nearly all eugenicists believe birth control to be a crucial tool in genetic engineering. In both instances the established power of the Church is intolerant to the rising social prominence of these practices. This is all perfectly embodied in a controversial court case between an activist and Catholic doctor that grabs the attention of Britain.

It is exactly stories like these that we try to bring to you at TimeGhost. While dates, names, troop movements, and maps are all very interesting, understanding a historical time period requires us to look at much less readily available information as well. The case covered in today's episode truly does capture the Zeitgeist, or TimeGhost, of the era.

What case studies do you think future historians will look to in order to understand the Zeitgeist of our era, and how this Zeitgeist affects our approach to human reproduction?

The Birth Control Movement and Eugenics - A Curious Link | B2W: ZEITGEIST! I E.18 - Winter 1923

In the winter of 1923, a controversial activist takes a Catholic doctor to trial for libel. The proceedings capture a much bigger moment in the history of the interwar period: the controversial - but inherent - link between birth control and eugenics. Well done. Thanks for the work you put into the episodes, especially appreciate the Between Two Wars shows. This period of time was so important to our current culture.

In this regard, I'm thinking that future historians will look at Roe vs.Wade.

Talk about timely, considering todays news that the Supreme Court is going to go at that decision yet again.

GK Chesterton labelled eugenicists as ‘homicidal maniacs’ in 1922 in his Eugenics and Other Evils. Who knows what form human reproduction will take once gene editing gathers steam? Perhaps it won’t be human at all.

Two moment that encapsulate the past 10 years: The auto company executives being castigated for flying in their private jet to Washington to ask for bailout money after the financial meltdown in 2009 and Zuckerberg being hauled in front of the Senate over the disinformation being disseminated on his free-for-all platform. The former best illustrates the detachment, sense of entitlement, and increasing disparity in wealth between those few at the top and the increasingly restive and growing numbers of those at the bottom. The latter best illustrates the sense of arrogance and irresponsibility of the social media companies and the increasingly frayed state of social cohesion.

I agree with you, Bruce. I would argue that platforms like Facebook have grown in to de facto monopolies, and as such, should be subject to some form of oversight by the government to prevent them from misusing their monopoly powers.

Reminds of the joke: "Q: Why don't the Wesleyans go for shagging standing up? A: For fear it will lead to dancing." I would love to see a Bio on Vernon and Irene Castle, the dance gurus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_and_Irene_Castle
