This season the fascist leader Mussolini seizes power in Italy in what is carefully choreographed to be a show of force, and he sets about quickly constructing a national myth based on the Roman Empire. Across the Mediterranean, archaeological findings in Egypt's Valley of Kings discover a tomb which will start up an Egyptology frenzy in both the academic and cultural worlds. In film, new all time high budgets and experiments with 3D technology seem to create a world of cinema which much more closely resembles the IMAX theatres of the 21st century.

Interesting that April 20 (Hitler’s birthday) and April 21(anniversary of the founding of Rome) are important dates to the fascists. Unrelated: I am intrigued by the paintings in the background, the lady in green and the lady in red. Do you know the provenance of these works of art?

At 7:00 Indy states "Roman imagery will drape state addresses and an aggressive foreign policy will look to resurrect the days of Imperial might." At this moment the film shows Italian infantry walking past a group of Third World tribesmen as their officers ride along on mules. Coincidence? I think not.
