This week, Allied forces continue a daring withdrawal from Burma under the threat of Japanese advances. The Japanese also set sail for a campaign to secure the Coral Sea in the approaches to Australia, though Allied intelligence is already aware of this. As Indy so eloquently discusses at the end of this episode, it seems that total victory for Japan could be only one battle away.

The naval situation is no better for the Allies in the Mediterranean, where the constant Axis assault on the island naval base has significantly limited Allied submarine capabilities. This means that Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps are able to resupplied without almost no losses.

Finally, on the Soviet-German front it is the Axis who actually have the intelligence advantage. They have been able discover a Soviet plan to attack weakly positioned German forces in and around Kharkov.

140 - Japan - One Battle from Victory? - May 2, 1942

Now Burma and control of the Burma Road have fallen to the Japanese. Can nothing stop them? The Allies are thinking about maybe using the Solomon Islands as a base to build to try and fight back, but to do that they'll need control of the Coral Sea, but both sides are sending warships there since the Japanese plan to take Port Moresby. The Allies are aware of this, however, since they have the advantage of being able to read a substantial part of japan's radio traffic. It is a week of foreshadowing not just there, but also as the Allies send ships to take Madagascar from the Vichy French and the Soviets prepare to launch an offensive in the south of the Eastern Front. When the eastern front explodes properly and the Guadalcanal campaign is in full swing - how will Indy squeeze it into 15-17 minutes?

Great video as always, but I’m confused about something. Up until the episode of 27 March, the week-end date has corresponded with the date that the videos come out on YouTube (i.e. Saturdays) but since April the banners in the thumbnail have been saying the date after the date covered (for example, this Saturday is 1 May but the date given is 2 May). What’s up with that?

Small typo in your description just fyi. It says "without almost no losses" I assume it's supposed to day with* almost no losses.

What kind of typewriter is on Indy's right?

The British withdrawal from Burma was the longest retreat in the history of the British Army. But Bill Slim deserves applause. He inherited a rout and turned it into a fighting retreat. As Slim recorded in his book Defeat into Victory, the British Army marched out of Burma as a cohesive fighting force and they all knew that someday they would march back into Burma and its jungles.

Patrick Sullivan

No one gets credit for pulling off a great fighting retreat, even if it was something that saved the theater of operation.

I Love those "spyglass" video windows added to Indy's opening summary! Please keep those going forward.

Soon, Fall Blau (German summer offensive) will begin, and Army Group South and especially Panzergruppe von Kleist are going to get conflicting orders (between May and July). When the time comes, could you give us an insight into why this happened, and how it was received? I also posted the question in the Time Ghost Army forum in the OOTF megathread.
