This week people around the world move into the new year, 1942, and while none can predict the future all are hoping to see the war turn decisively in their favour. At the Arcadia conference a new age begins with the formation of the United Nations, who's founding members include the US, UK, USSR, and China, as well as European governments in exile, British dominions, and many American countries.

As for movement: Japan's advance in China is slowing, the Soviets are advancing in the centre and Crimea, and the Allies are advancing in North Africa.

The Formation of the United Nations! - WW2 - 123 - January 2, 1942

At the ongoing Arcadia Conference, 26 nations sign the Declaration of the United Nations. Otherwise it is very much a week of motion and changes in motion: in the USSR the Soviets are on the move in the center and the Crimea, the Japanese are slowing their movement in China, the Americans are finishing their movement in the Philippines, and the Axis are moving backward in North Africa. The Luftwaffe also decides that Malta must be eliminated as a base for the Allies. Will there be a special episode on the failure of US torpedos during the first years of the Pacific war?

Big big week. I wonder what will happen? Will Singapore fall? Will the U Boats win? What will happen in Russia? Will a big carrier battle happen? And what will be the outcome in North Africa

We shall see

Happy new year to everyone one time ghost. Especially Indy, Sparta, Astrid, Joram ect

Agreed. The Navy was finding that most of their torpedoes at this point in the war either failed to detonate or detonated far from the target.

One other thing, I know you mentioned Operatoin Archery, but forgot to mention Operatoin Anklet, the commando raid further north on the Lofoten islands as a diversion.

US Asiatic Fleet submarines fired 96 torpedoes during the first three months of the war without a single hit. Drachinifel's YouTube about the Mark 14 torpedo is fascinating if depressing. Even more depressing is the British RAF performance in Malaya: https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/documents/Research/RAF-Historical-Society-Journals/Bracknell-No-6-Far-East-Air-War.pdf

Good data, Indy!

Happy New Year Time Ghost team! Also Drachinifel has a good video on the US Mk 14 torpedo - "Failure is like onions".

Is the RAF performance at least as depressing as the Army's ? God, what a total cock up. Thanks for posting the link.

What was it the Japanese called the captured RAF and other British stores ? Churchill's something or other. Made life so much easier for their army, one that pretty much despised their "Q" branch, and never did get the idea of No stem, No rose.

The War has reached Malaya, my country. Therefore I sign up to join the TimeGhost Army during the Malaya Campaign.

Sadly, there was no coordination between the grounds and air forces in relation to airfield placement and defense. The RAF ground personnel had no small arms, and their airfield were easy picking for the Japanese, especially since one airfield was forward of the front lines because the two services didn't see the need to talk.

A big welcome to the TimeGhost Army Alex! I wonder how 1942 will treat the fate of my country Singapore...

We shall wait another week for the series to continue to that. Stay tune 😁

I would recommend you watch Drachinifel channel. He does a great Ep on the topic of the Mrk 14 ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ5Ru7Zu_1I&t=23s) here is the link to the video.

Rune

I was about to recommend that. He are a great narrator and goes in great details explaining the multiply layers of failing of that weapon. I can only strongly recommend it.

Rune

I can also very much recommend Drachinifel's episode on the torpedo. Look for the title "The Mark 14 Torpedo - Failure is Like Onions". It is one to watch!

What hasn't been mentioned is that by the middle of December German U boats had begun sinking American merchant ships off Gulf and Atlantic coasts. By Christmas they are sinking ships off the coast of New York and New Jersey. Over the next year they will range along the east coast sinking American merchantmen at will. New York and Miami will be favorite sites because the lights of the cities make targeting at night particularly easy. Eventually the US will be forced to institute a convoy system and will construct an intracoastal waterway system along the entire eastern coast.

My fam lived in Atlantic City. I was told tales of ships burning on the horizon and bodies washing up with the tides. Blackouts too. I got to SCUBA dive on some of the wrecks. Twisted steel and you could still see the heat and burn damage. In my teens my grandad hired an old Merchant Marine. I asked him if he ever had ship torpedoed out from under him. He said, as a matter of fact, 8. Later he told me some horrifying stories about men blown to bits. burning and or drownings. His one arm was scarred bad and he told me it was from burning oil. Even then he told me they did not get VA benefits.
