Winter is Here! The failure of Barbarossa - WW2 - 119 - December 5, 1941

The Wehrmacht is halted by the Red Army at the gates of Moscow. Not only that, but a Red Army counteroffensive begins pushing the Germans back decisively. The Germans are also beginning to withdraw from their siege of Tobruk in North Africa. Japan, however, is advancing all over the Pacific, sending troop transports into the South China Sea, though it is unclear just whom Japan plans to attack. The Japanese are also- in top secrecy- sending a force of aircraft carriers to soon attack the American Pacific fleet at anchor at Pearl Harbor. This was so so so good! Did the Liason conference use the B-17 buildup as a reason for war before they would be iced out of the South Pacific? or was this content to show how close the allies were to getting supremacy?

If you look at the map it shows that this is now truly a World War.

I still find it incredible that the Germans could have been so wrong.

German arrogance will fade in the teeth of a Russian winter.

This episode briefly references why Hitler transferred a Luftflotte from the USSR to the Mediterranean front even as the battle for Moscow reached its climax: British air and sea units based at Malta were slaughtering Italian convoys. I would love Indy to do a special on the extraordinarily brave but completely overlooked service of the Axis war effort: the Italian merchant marine. Despite horrific losses, the merchant fleet continued to deliver to ports controlled by the German/Italian forces in North Africa sufficient supplies from Feb. 1941 up through early 1943. It was usually the lack of an adequate fleet of trucks that prevented these crucial supplies from reaching the front lines. Perhaps Rommel's greatest mistake of the African campaign occurred when he prioritized the resumption of his ground offensive in mid-1942 over a plan to invade Malta. Even then, the British base there barely hung on until the arrival of the remnants of the Pedestal convoy. After that, Britain was able to build up its forces and resume its efforts to choke off Italian convoys. Despite all that, the Italian merchant marine was able to supply nearly 300,000 Axis troops throughout North Africa up until its last offensive at Kasserine Pass in February 1943.

The winter was a factor, logistics was a factor, but the main reason the Germans were defeated in front of Moscow is because the Russian soldiers chewed them up!
