Ceasefire.

It sounds good - but does it mean the Crisis is over?
The United Nations, with Secretary Dag Hammarskjöld at the helm, is trying to do their job.
But…

Nasser, on his side, is not happy with an internationally assembled UN force to patrol Egyptian soil.
And the three invaders - although having agreed to a ceasefire - aren't too keen to give up the land they've conquered.
But what will happen to Britain's economy if they don't?
And the European Oil Crisis?

Things are certainly looking pretty bleak, but in the nick of time, one man’s ill health may come to save a whole nation - or even continent.

But then there's Israel as well to think about...

When all is said and done - who will be the winners and who will be the losers in all of this?
What lies in wait for Egypt, for the scheming trio, for Europe?

Only one thing seems certain - the world will have changed forever.

Thank you all for staying with us til the end of this endeavor to map out the Suez Crisis.
Never forget that it is you - all of you in the TimeGhost Army - who make this possible.

From all of us at the TimeGhost Team: Thank You!!

The End of the European Empires | The Suez Crisis | Part 5

Whilst the fighting may be over, the Crisis certainly isn't. For starters, the three invaders may have agreed to a ceasefire, but aren't too keen to give up the land they've conquered. And even if this is resolved, what lies in wait for the humiliated ex-colonial powers? Ultimately, only one thing does seem certain - irreversible change. Interesting, but you didn't mention whether the US came out a winner or loser. I would vote for winner as Eisenhower clearly was effective in managing the crisis. A possible down side would be getting involved more deeply in the Middle East. Eventually we became seen as the leading new colonial power, hence 9/11, terrorism, and the current on-going anxieties and outbreaks.

I agree with Paul. It'd be great to get some remarks on the US and USSR. But great job! I am wondering if you could do a video on the Novocherkassk massacre? It is an important event that too few are aware of. And it would nicely fill the timeline. A film about it has just won an award at the Venice International Film Festival

Some months later, mayb a year or two, Ike expressed regrets about not backing Britain and France. At the time of the crisis, Dulles still thought he could persuade Nasser to not take Soviet assistance for the Aswan High Dam but work with the US within the parameters of teh US' offer--and to cut back on inflaming pan-Arabism, generally. Soemwhere between late 1956 and teh Iraq coup in 1958, Ike started thinking differently.

But would things have worked out better in ten long run had the US backed Britain and France in 1956? That is a very hard counterfactual to parse.

Really excellent narrative of the crisis, obviously well researched. Well done to the team and the presenter, forget his name but he did a good job again.

Later you should do a series on the Six Day War: Day by Day.

Thanks Crispin, we really appreciate the support. Without your support and the support of the rest of the TGA here on Patreon it honestly wouldn't be possible.

We've had loads of requests for this! We've added it to the episode ideas list, no promises though!

IndoChina or Algeria could be next?

What about the Malayan emergency or go from one canal to another with the US invasion of Panama when we took out Noriega

Stay in South-East Asia as you're doing some great work on the theme of post-colonialism ; Malayan Emergency, please!

Thanks for this clear concise and enlightening series on the Suez crisis...in particular for highlighting the widespread anti imperialist and anti colonial mood in the world at that time, and which is still present. Excellent presentation by that young lively presenter 🤔...he has a weird name...Nice background, kudos to all the timeghost team👍

Sounds interesting. Really looking forward to seeing it all. Maybe you did this and I missed it, but could you do a little youtube trailer that we could share with friends that describes all 3 channels: The Great War, TimeGhost, and World War 2, and then have it turn into an advertisement/trailer for the Pearl Harbor special? I've tried to describe these channels to so many people and get them to check them out. It's been hard to describe Indy's charismatic personality and presentation, and the general vibe of the community that is more interesting than traditional documentaries. It would be great to have a kind of summary video we could share via email, fb, media. Many thanks, you all do a great job always.
