You don't always know how consequential or important something is when it happens. The effects of the capture of an Enigma encoder from a German U-Boat this week probably were probably not clear to the Allied crew. But with the power of hindsight – partly because the huge press it got in modern movies, we recognise this event as being crucial to the Allied war effort. Now, we'll get to how crucial this actually was later. But it's interesting to witness such a moment 'as it happens'.

Thank you all for your support and all of your interesting contributions, kind reactions and compliments in our comment sections! You keep us going on so many levels! We hope all of you are doing well!

Cheers,

Some estimated the code breaking of the Enigma machine shortened the war for 2 to 3 years and saved many lives on both sides.

I think it’s talked about in “The Woman Who Smashed Codes” but Elizebeth Friedman in the US also cracked Enigma... but with a pencil.

To clarify, the naval Enigma, although basically the same machine as the Luftwaffe and the army used was a very different animal. First the navy had added three extra rotors to choose from as compared to the five rotors used by the Luftwaffe and the army, this significantly added to the complexity of the machine. Second , as all navys the German navy had a much better understanding of crypto security, they had started to use radio earlier and had no alternative for long distance communications, than the other armed forces and had created a much more advanced, and secure system for generating both daily keys and message keys. This explains how it was possible to read the Luftwaffe Enigma during the battle of Crete but not the naval Enigma.

She was actually involved in code breaking of a group of Germans in South America who used code not Enigma, the chances of breaking Enigma with a pencil are somewhat less than the chance of me winning the Euro Millions Lottery, however I could improve my chances of winning by buying a ticket.

My time has finally arrived! Yes Indy you are correct Hal was my Great Uncle (Grandfathers brother who also played in the minors in Arkansas). I remember watching a few of your baseball videos so I was hoping the stars would align one day! Also was and will always be the only pitcher in the history of the game to ever win back to back MVP's (thanks Cy Young award). Love all the shows, cant wait for the baseball special episode!

If you watch the landmark "World at War" series made in 1973, they Interview some senior Naval figure, who tries to explain how the RN suddenly had great success in hunting the U-boats down without disclosing the role of Enigma as cracking the German code was still a state secret.

Hi I think one of the ways in which decoding Enigma really helped was for once they were decoding new German messages and they were able to predict where is the German submarine Patrol lines were an adjust the route of the Convoy to go around the U-boats. Because as much as it was important to sink German submarines a convoys purpose where to get slow vulnerable Merchant ships across the ocean in one piece.
