Operation Product, or the first 'Police Actions' as they were euphemistically referred to, takes place in 1947. Being Dutch myself, I was shocked going through the accounts of Dutch soldiers taking part in this military operation. The role the Dutch played in the East Indies is even more relevant today, as today is 'Remembrance Day' in the Netherlands. Today, we remember those who died during World War Two and the veterans who fought in the wars thereafter. Including the Indonesian War of Independence and Operation Product.

Now, as I wrote in the pinned comment, I don't want to go into the (mainly political) debate about remembering history, but I do feel like we owe the world honesty about what went down. Being a historian with an academic background, I think it's our duty to keep sharing stories, perspectives and to keep digging for new information about the events that shaped history and shape the world we live in today.

Never forget.

Cheers,
Joram

It's a pity my dear friend, Carl, is no longer with us. He would have found these episodes either fascinating or enraging. He was born and raised on Bali, where his father was the senior Dutch military officer prior to the Japanese invasion. Carl was trained as a soldier in his youth by the unit's native sergeant major, and mastered the art of decapitating wild boar with a parang (Indonesian machete). When he returned to Bali after fighting the Germans in WWII, he served as an intelligence and special operations officer. After the war for independence ended he settled down to raise a family, but a few years later he was suddenly forced to flee with his family to Holland under threat of immediate arrest and possible execution. Old animosities had raised their ugly heads to destroy anyone perceived as a potential enemy of the state.

Gee, I wonder where the Dutch got all those Owen submachine guns from...

I'm so sorry for your loss William, losing a friend is always hard. It's a beautiful gesture of you to honor his memory like this. It sounds like Carl had quite an extraordinary life though! Almost like a movie. I actually went to Bali three years ago on vacation, it's an incredibly beautiful place. :) I was only there for two weeks, so I would love to go back and explore more of the island some day. Maria

Thanks, Maria. Ye, he had quite a life and should have been killed many times over in Indonesia, Holland, and South America by his numerous close encounters with poisonous snakes, pythons, bears, tigers, terrorists/freedom fighters, and Nazis. Against the odds, he lived to the ripe old age of 83, despite having several massive heart attacks. I kept trying to get him to write his memoirs and offered to assist him with the aid of a computer. That was in the late 1990s. I went back on active military duty in 2001, so was no longer able to assist him. He passed away in 2003.

It’s a good series but I think you are giving the communists a pass on their war crimes.

Wait for the next episodes. Also we don't distinguish hard between the faction on the Indonesian side, because it is almost impossible - they are a patchwork of a great variety of ideological directions. Guilt assignment after independence has also clouded the facts as these factions have continuously tried to blame each other for any atrocities.

Fair enough.
