The war will be over by christmas right?

Stéphane Adam

Seems like a lot of people just couldn't believe what was happening. Like, they just were not able to process it. The war, the speed of the German conquest, the insane atrocities... And my god this last segment is the stuff of nightmares.

Awesome!

this makes me wonder why promises even matter any more to a country esp after what was shown with the great war only years before.

There was a story about British artillery experts visiting Poland and inspecting Polish artillery posts. When asked what they thought, the British officers complimented the Polish commander on the organisation of the post and the complexity of its defenses. He inquired where the guns were as the post was manned by artillerymen but they had no guns to use.

Part 2. The Polish officer sadly replied that the guns were still in Britain. They had not been sent as Britain would need them to fight its war. Sounds a lot like the Turkish battleship episode in the middle of 1914.

Chamberlain's appeasement can also be understood if you consider his fears of modern warfare. Chamberlain was horrified by the bombing of Spanish cities and fundamentally believed that the bombers would always get through. He remembered the 'blitz' on London in the 1st WW and did not want that destruction inflected upon Britain.

Q If you use Führer, why not Göring?

TimeGhostHistory

Because I (Spartacus) only caught the missing umlaut on Führer (stupid dyslexia exasperated by that it was past midnight after 13 hours of editing when I pasted that comment in). The script that I pasted from was written without umlauts.

TimeGhostHistory

It's a good question that probably doesn't have a simple answer, but rather lies in the great complexity of reality. Our hope is that when we have all episodes of Between 2 Wars done, we will get a better feeling for why history repeated itself so fast.

Yeah, I can imagine all those poor civilians thinking "Wait, they can't just shoot us all, right? Right???". You can almost see in their eyes that they're just as confused as they are terrified

That last clip is one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. I know that the Nazi's were horrible people but that is shocking.

I really enjoy this series and greatly appreciate the hard work. As a secondary teacher I understand time constraints but too many junior high school years having a Sudenten German refugee teacher hammering in the correct forms. Makes me a pedant. I assume you are happy for us to use these in class room? We are starting WW2 in 4th term and the Between the Wars & WW2 series will be very valuable.

Good to see this developing. Could a number of episodes on Nazi doctrines be made to elaborate on their rationale please? Biological, state, existential, economic, political, legal, collective, family, generational, individual, civic information, education etc. There's a lot of background work that has to be done on the evolution of world affairs and how they tilted German society into their hands so it's a rich subject of study. An examination that focuses wholly on the military interplay will overplay the role of military culture and relegate the political aspect to a spectacle of horror. It's important to see the details of their worldview to make the study of it instructive. I'm sure you will. The series on the Great War will stand as a resource over time. Good to see you take on this one.

This this still the massive collaboration that it was supposed to be?

TimeGhostHistory

Yes, but we need to get up to speed with the basics before we start stretching out. In the end we depend on initiative from our partners as well, and some of the original channels are still on board for that, some are not, but the collaboration will steadily grow - we posted this update the day before we went live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-ox1n9Fl0Q

TimeGhostHistory

We will be doing many things not immediately related to military developments. The rise of extremism in Germany, Italy, the Soviet Union, Japan and all over the world in the 1920s and 1930s is being examined closely in Between 2 Wars on the TimeGhost channel. On WW2 we will also start doing a series called War Against Humanity that exmines war crimes and crimes against humanity by all of the beligerents of the war.
