I really like the way you describe the living graveyard, and having someone named Rusalka is interesting as either a general reference or a reference to the Dvořák opera. Favorite line: ‘wanted so deeply, worshiped so wholesomely.’ Although in context ‘more than welcome your input’ is wonderfully smirk-inducing. Moriana’s ‘portal’ made me chuckle, with that gaymer line about ‘girls who like portals and boys who like joysticks.’ We’ve got a theme about ‘true self,’ and I like how it builds; starting with ‘even as a human you’d be magnificent,’ and culminating with the idea of Moriana being someone else entirely underneath. Same with the idea of being known and the Sea-Witch’s name. We get the set up (Moriana’s stumbled greeting), and it builds (the multiple names, perception), and the crescendo of Moriana using That Name and all it implies. And we’re left wondering, what could ‘rise to the surface’ and what if it doesn’t? Given how deep in the ocean this is, could ‘the darkness retreat’ and it still be physically dark, because dark can in fact be safe & desirable (that’s probably too much, but you get what I mean)? This is intriguing, and not just because of the tentacles.
