An origin story, another tale of the Pearls, and beginnings .

I have one major question coming out of this: is Niky a reliable narrator? We know he’s a con man, but that doesn’t mean he’s consistently dishonest. I don’t doubt him here, but he feels…flexible. When and how he could bend is…curious. It’s interesting to talk about being created/designed, having one’s path laid out, in the most literal sense. ‘Leaving the path’ is usually considered a bad thing, but that really depends on what the original path is. The ‘geezer’ has a goal of breaking his brother’s chains–so he’s trapped too. It’s not really a question of trapped vs. free, but different kinds of trapped (brother’s chains vs. bear’s hooks). I love how this links up with the story of de Reynard. “In the midst of catastrophe, they were checking out library books.” Well, books are the best weapons in the world, aren’t they? “We should see what he does when he runs into her at the coffee bar.” The injections of humor, like the mentions of other points of time, are tone changes that don’t break the narrative flow. Good stuff. In context, he has every reason to stutter/shuffle/etc at the coffee bar, but picturing it is still really funny. D’aw. Re: Darcy’s point about the spelling of names. We could keep it open-ended, but then we’ll have cases like now, where my brain hears ‘Anbar’ and keeps offering up ‘anbaric’ from His Dark Materials, and I don’t think that’s right.

This was a magical story to listen to. Thank you.
