In January of 1807, Napoleon ordered his men to make winter quarters and turned his attention to an exciting, but dangerous new mistress with a hidden agenda. But before the month was over, fate would draw the Grande Armée back out on campaign.

In your last episode you mentioned that Col. Savary of the 14eme ligne was skewered by a Cossack Lancer. I was wondering how deeply the attachment between an officer and his regiment ran? Would Col. Savary have been happier if he had lived to see his regiment obliterated at Eylau?

That's a good question. The connection varied depending on the officer and the regiment -- some were beloved, some were hated, some were just time-servers with little connection at all. I don't know about Savary and the 14th, I wanted to find out more about him, but I was short on time by the time I wrote that passage

New patron here - great episode! Eylau is my "favorite" battle, so really appreciated this one. Prof Mikaberidze plans a book about the battle, and may be published in the next year. Arnold's book is good, ditto the collection of Russian writings Mikaberidze collected in his 1807 book.
