Walking Around Town

Rilfana had broken my ironclad futon-franks, so I gave up and decided to get up. I changed from my nightclothes into my normal clothes. The town of Gardia is safe, and if I return to the inn by evening, I won't need to equip myself with protective gear. If I return the day after tomorrow, I'll probably have to buy my own clothes by the end of the day.

As for weapons, he would hang only his iron sword. Hanging a wooden sword from my waist would be counterproductive in preventing trouble.

Both Claire and Rilfana had already changed.

Rilfana was wearing the same clothes, as she only had the one outfit she received yesterday. She was not soiled just by walking around the town, so I guess she would be fine.

It was still a little early for the stores to open. We decided to have breakfast at a restaurant.

The restaurant is only open to guests in the morning, and the menu seems to be the same for everyone.

Scrambled eggs, grilled bacon, and bread were on the menu. The bread was all-you-can-eat, and there seemed to be a choice of water, arancia juice, or milk to drink. I was curious, so I ordered arancia juice, which tasted just like orange juice.

However, I was a little surprised that eggs, fluffy bread, and dairy products, which are often precious in other worlds, were served in abundance.

"Wow, there are so many varieties."

After breakfast, I took a break in my room and visited the general store as soon as the 3 a.m. bell rang. Except for restaurants and inns, most stores open around the time of the 3 a.m. bell and close at the 2 p.m. bell.

Unlike the stores at the Adventurer's Guild, they also carry a number of card holders with cute designs for women.

The area where Claire was looking at the card holders was stocked with storage items made of cloth and leather, as well as purses, pouches, and bags.

Other items included soap, towels, baskets, pens, paper, medicine, and a wide range of other household items, as well as tools for adventurers, such as water bags. Overall, the items may be a bit more expensive than the simple ones with decorations and patterns.

Claire seems to have chosen a pink card holder with an embroidered flower on the front. I also bought a card case for me and Rilfana, and a chain for attaching it to my belt. I can wear it around my neck.

My card case was a simple black one with no embroidery, while Rilfana's was a light blue one with embroidered ripples, perhaps to match her hair color.

I bought a pouch for Rilfana to wear around her waist and a small backpack with a cute design. I'll let her carry her own lightweight stuff, like a change of clothes for a few days or so.

"Let's just go to the west gate, looking at the stores for now, shall we?"

"Yes, I wonder if there is a bookstore."

"Yes, sir."

After finishing our shopping at the general store, we decided to look around on West Street.

I could have asked at the general store where the bookstore was, but it was fun to find it myself.

The stores on West Street seem to be a motley assortment, unlike South Street, which was somewhat compartmentalized. Since I had some time to kill today, I decided to go into the stores that caught my attention from the outside. Window shopping.

"These bookstores here are huge."

We reached the west gate and found a large bookstore. There were three other bookstores along the way, but they were smaller or carried more other merchandise than books.

"Shall we go in?"

"Yes!"

As I entered the bookstore, I smelled ink. In this world where literacy is high and printing by magic machines exists, books can be bought for not much money. However, it is not enough for villagers who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry to buy many books.

Perhaps because many of the buyers are aristocrats, merchants, and adventurers who earn a good living, the majority of books are history books and technical books on tactics and magic. However, a few literary works and comics were also sold.

Claire was comparing magic-related books, thinking that she could buy a few for this amount of money. I'd rather take them home and read them in the village than read them in the library," she said.

Curious, she flipped through the comics, and found many works she had seen in Japan, ranging from daily life stories to those featuring battles with different powers. Many of the comics themselves seem to be old, but this may be because they were written by reincarnated players.

This may be because many of them were books that I have read in Japan before.

Some of them started out by neatly tracing the storyline, but then went completely in the direction of the original. Maybe they were sent to our world of Virtuaari without knowing what happened after that.

With a little bit of a heavy heart, I decided to read the paperback version as well.

As I expected, there were some works that I had seen before in Japan. Compared to comics, there were not so many, and most of them were stories of knights and adventurers for men, and stories of aristocrats and love stories between different social statuses for women.

Unlike comics, novels need to be expressed only in letters, so I think that only works written with an awareness of the fact that Japanese common sense is not understood remained.

Maybe I should buy a short story collection or something complete in one volume so that I can read it in the village?

"Rilfana can buy whatever she wants with the money I gave her yesterday if she wants it too."

I said to Rilfana, who was looking around with a twinkle in her eye, as if she liked books. She immediately brought two books. Both seemed to be paperbacks.

"I found a continuation of a book I was reading before."

Rilfana seemed to be curious about the continuation of the book.

She told me that one of the books was about a young man who comes out of his village, becomes an adventurer, and grows up to be an up-and-comer, and that she recommended it. Rilfana is buying the third volume, so if I like it, I will buy the second volume when I come to town next time.

The other book seemed to be a story of youth and love of aristocrats who go to school, and Rilfana brought volume 9, so it was a little expensive to buy all of them. I think I'll buy this one.

I also decided to buy some illustrated books to prepare for becoming an adventurer. They are thicker books with pictures, so they are a bit pricey, but still only about 5 small silver coins per book.

I chose books that were large enough to fit in my pouch, so I didn't have to worry about the weight.

The three illustrated books I decided to buy were "The Complete Book of Monsters," "The Illustrated Book of Wild Plants," and "Life in the Outdoors: An Adventurer's Guide.

The illustrated book on monsters is subtitled "Don't worry. With this, you can even beat the GM God!" I guessed that it was compiled by a reincarnated person.

I felt relieved when I checked it out. Contrary to the jokey subtitle, it seemed to summarize everything I needed to know.

The first thing you should do is to read the book that Claire bought.

"Sis, if you are going to be an adventurer, it would be better to learn offensive magic, right?"

"Yes, I think you should learn some of them."

"If you don't have any means of attack, it will be dangerous if something happens and you become isolated."

Claire, who can use recovery magic, would be treated as a healer in the current situation, but in the game, there were several ways to attack depending on the profession.

Basically, there are two types: the pure magic type, whose attacks are also supplemented by magic, and the muscle type, who hit with a weapon. I will not know for sure until I actually try it out, but at least Claire's sword seemed to be below average, so there is a high possibility that she is a magic type. Learning offensive magic would not be a bad choice.

"Then I'll buy this one."

Claire brought three books together. The books she chose were labeled "How to Use Magic Starting with Magic Manipulation," "My First Recovery Magic," and "The Basics of Attack Magic.

After paying the bill and leaving the bookstore, the 4 a.m. bell rang.

"Sis, is it time for lunch? There was a stylish store a little further back."

"It looks like a café."

"Let's go there then."

It was lunch time and the café was reasonably crowded. I managed to get a seat for three people.

"It looks like lunch is only available as a lunch set.

"Today's lunch set includes a sandwich, soup, salad, and your choice of beverage.

I ordered for three and they came right out. Maybe they're limiting the menu to one type of food in order to prioritize customer turnover.

There are three types of sandwiches: an egg sandwich, a tuna sandwich, and a vegetable sandwich. A salad made with leafy greens, separate from the sandwiches. The soup is made with vegetables, beans, and bacon.

The food in town is varied and very tasty. I had not expected to see so much progress.

We'll be living in the village for a while yet, and we should probably think of some more dishes we can make in the village.

I have cooking skills, and as long as I have the ingredients, there should be a lot of things I can make.
