Here we go. I am hyped and emotional, this will break me yet again. Thank you so much. Edit: It's a little thing but you catching that last part after the credits really made my day lol.

Eric The Viewer

I think something got mixed up.

Thank you so much for letting us enjoy the movie with you. Thematically I really love that Violet's done so much to connect other people and help them express their truest feelings and learned to understand all of these things, and she became the truest example of one of the series' themes that sometimes things are too much to say and you have to write a letter like she did 'cause she couldn't get it out on the beach. Thought you'd enjoy some official after the series artwork from the studio giving a glimpse of life in Violet's retirement. https://i.redd.it/l8ht91njzj471.jpg https://i.ibb.co/FDh31dt/Violet-Evergarden-Calendar.jpg

I goddamn LOVE that you went into this movie completely blind, and thinking that Gilbert was actually dead. Because if you saw not even the trailer, but only the movie poster, you'd have been spoiled on that surprise.

You are not alone in how the movie brings out so much emotion. I really enjoyed re-watching it with you. Kyo-Ani released a calendar that shows some images they did for events that happen after the end of this movie, I can message one of them I still have a link too, if you want, when you are done with the series. The old lady in the museum is the reddish-haired receptionist showed a few times in the show and movie.

I really glad that you and a lot of people enjoyed the movie! Unfortunately im not very fond of it personally in regards to Violet's ending, but i loved everything else about it. This is one of my favorite series so im so glad to see ya enjoy the series! Looking forward to the other movie as well!

Violet couldn't have gotten a more happy and fulfulling ending, if you love Violet how can you not be fond of her being finally happy? its the perfect happy ending for a girl who clearly deserves it.

BasedGoomy

Im happy for her that she got the ending she wanted, i just think thematically it undoes a lot of what i felt was growth she had in the series. Learning what "I love you" means, accepting it, keeping Gilbert in her heart but moving forward with her life and making what she wanted from it. Just my opinion, i am very happy that you and a lot of other people enjoyed this ending though. I dont mean to try and invalidate that or anything, just sharing my thoughts.

AndreasZ

I've seen this complain about the movie a few times and while i understand where it's coming for there are some reasons why i don't agree that it undoes her growth. One is when the reveal that Gilbert is alive happens. It comes after she had already learned how to accept his death and created a life for herself so it wasn't an easy solution for Violet learning how to live. Two and most important is the choice she makes in the movie. When she had to choose between staying on the island and keep trying to make Gilbert see her or go to her client to fulfill an important request she chose the latter and she was even willing/okay not being with Gilbert as long as he was safe. That not only did not undo any of her growth but even showed how much further she's come than before. Also despite a doll's job starting to become absolete she stayed somewhere she could still write letters and bring people together. Imo both the ending of the show and the movie fit and show Violet's strength of character very well.

I can see your point of view on it (even if I do not agree), and I like the ending. AndreasZ said what I would have said so will not repeat it here. I will say that they author was and is pleased with the ending in the movie (and the series) although it differs from the light novels. The author has not ruled out writing more about violet and her world in the future. (there was a couple interviews about the books and the show done)

Daniel

I came here to say basically what AndreasZ said so I'll just say +1 on that. I don't want to turn it into a pile-on but I'd like to add: Gilbert himself, like some of the audience, didn't accept her love and attachment to him because of feeling it meant she hadn't grown and it wasn't fully an act of her own will (also, the credits song is "WILL" by TRUE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoFJP1qXy5c lyrics: https://www.reddit.com/r/VioletEvergarden/comments/iwvhf0/lyrics_will_english_ver_by_true/ the song even feels triumphant instead of melancholic like the show OP and ED) That changes when she respects his stated wishes (against her own desires) and she made it clear in her letter that she understands his feelings, returns his love without misunderstanding or dependency, that she got to experience all the beautiful things he wanted for her and that she feels her chance to experience them is thanks to the kindness and love he showed her in spite of their circumstances. Her love and her choices (to leave and to stay) are all the more meaningful because of her growth. I feel this ending is the fullfilment of it.

Peter Wyatt

Also, why would this story have to only be about Violet's growth? Why should she grow, alone? Throughout this story, she hasn't grown alone. In fact, her profession as a doll allowed her to bring growth and healing to others, while she learned what it meant to heal herself from her traumas, as well as understanding the words "I love you" through all the heartfelt letters she's written for her clients. Because of her growth not being a solitary one, Gilbert's growth has to be seen as tied into hers. At the same time of Violet's growth not necessary to be a solitary one, why should Gilbert be left alone on that island, deep within what even his brother knew was pure dissatisfaction? At this movie's end, he told him to "go", and while being only one word, it's kind of a callback to Violet's first heartfelt letter. A simple message, though Gilbert knew exactly what his brother was referring to.

Thank you for everything

Thank you for watching this series very underrated and it's not the kind main stream anime watchers like. So I'm glad to see someone I follow watched it

Personally I'm still kinda torn on this movie. Part of that may be because I watched Violet on release and this movie came out so much later - that I was very content with the series ending, like the airshow and letters was such a great conclusion to it all in my mind. My first watch of this movie I had foolishly spoiled for myself, so my preconception was negative because it wasn't the ending that I felt was necessary, of course I wanted more Violet, and I wanted her to be happy so I still watched it. Now a few years later, watching it again I'm ok with the movie, I think both "endings" are good (airshow or this), and I do love the side story of this movie that takes place in the future, what a great tie-in to the series.

Emotionally, it hits you harder than truck-kun, seriously though i think the series and movie is one of my rare 10/10s, Kyoto Animation really knocked it out of the park with everything, it would have been nice to see a table of photos at the end but it ended in a very satisfying way.
