you're so right, it DOES suck to watch hachiman make these choices and handle things in this way. but it should! he's basically using the excuse of helping others as a justification for doing things that harm himself because he thinks he deserves it/it's going to happen anyway, so he might as well intentionally cause it to happen and at least *use* it, and then the reaction he gets validates his belief that everyone already felt that way about him from the beginning. but also, because he can't really internalize that other people care about him, he doesn't understand that it hurts the people who care about him to watch him martyr himself over and over like this, which makes it SO heartbreaking to watch

Comments on this episode are always pretty weird no matter on which website when it comes to Yukino's feelings. People understand stuff like how he betrayed his and her ideal when preserving the shallowness of the others relationship (his big lie), how she hates that he sacrifices himself, but the most simple thing never gets mentioned. The whole Kyoto arc was Yukino being confronted directly with the topic of love. Her classmates talking about Yukino and Hachiman to her and then Tobe's request. And it ends with her seeing the boy she connects the most to this topic confessing to someone else and that these words had no meaning for him. No wonder she clutches her heart when she got hurt this much.

I think it would have been easier for people to see that "Yukino being confronted directly with the topic of love" if they had left in the scenes where yukino's classmates ask about her and hachiman's relationship. But they unfortuantely had to cut to save time. like most anime's 😔
