Rewatching this with you reminded me why I didn't remember this episode. This is definitely one of the weaker episodes in the series as a whole, the age thing always bothered me too so I just thought of this as a "oh this is cute" episode to try and cope with that lol

Sadly it's just history. We didn't understand developmental psychology back in the age this was portrayed and women died in childbirth often when it didn't happen early. It's still uncomfortable to watch though.

A lot of people get tripped up or stuck on the age gap for this episode, and I get it, but as you mention at the end "it's a time thing" (era) or "Royalty thing" which is why I can move past it and just appreciate the beauty of the episode. I'm glad you watched the OVA first, because people who don't are very surprised that Violet went from writing Birthday invitations to suddenly writing public love letters for the princess of another country, to convince the people of THAT country that this marriage is a positive thing. (crazy) Violet mentions she's "around 14" and most figure she is older, but she spent 4 years in fairly brutal war which I imagine matured her a tad, ignoring the understanding of emotions part... The princess asks Violet to show more expression when they first meet, and at the end of the episode you see Violet smiling, great moment. One of my favorite things of this show is the title credit at the end of the episodes, they always hit the tone perfectly. "You write letters that bring people together?" could mean different things depending on context. Looking forward to the rest!

I disagree a whole lot, this episode is really based. Honestly what I find more weird is that weird obsession that westerners or especially americans seem to have with age gaps. Like yeah in most cases it's creepy and not good for all the reasons you can think of but stop pretending like your laws are universal laws of the universe for once and look at the bigger picture. People tend to get too stuck up on age gaps instead of just going "okay kinda weird... anyway let's move on from that thought process" and enjoying it for what it's intended to be.

i don't think any of us are trying to impose our "western" ideals onto anyone. we're just stating what makes us uncomfortable. it seems like we're all trying to move past it because we recognize that it is common in the time period it's set it. that doesn't mean we can't rightfully be uncomfortable about the episode and share our opinions about it.

The age thing doesn't fit for me since Violet absolutely doesn't look that age. The Princess does but not VIolet. In the light novels the show is based off of she's 18 or 19 at the time of these stories, so I just go with that.

On the battlefield things happen. If you're in the same unit and live and fight and see deaths all around you for years - well, let's just say I knew some "child soldiers" of both sexes and it kind of equalized them in Maturity. Also Gilbert as son of (as we learn in I think episode 3) aristocracy that likely had military tradition (given that other brother was also in the military), could and would get his commission early. Especially in time of War - he would get promotions crazily fast. And in this era, you could become officer without attending officers school, if you had gone to something like "military high school". So if someone told me he was 19 at the moment he met Violet, or even younger (lowest age would be 17, but that's a bit hard to believe) - I'd believe them. Also having "romantic" feelings is often misunderstood as having "sexual drive" towards another person - which while it can occur, is a different kind of affection. As for Royalty - well that goes with times and with role they had in society. People often thing that Monarchs were "dictators", but it came with a lot of strings. Including - being basically a tool for the state. Certainly not a nice thought, but from studying history I can tell you one thing - "deal" to get married would involve a TON of precautions, guarantees, rules etc. So princess should be safe and I don't see prince as some sort of predator. She probably would be married off to someone regardless (sad reality of being royalty). Better that she had at least some agency in who her partner would be. Certainly not pleasant to think about, but she still was in better situation than 95% of people in similar circumstances. I don't exactly know what people expected from show trying to be both "historically accurate" (at least as much as it can be done for setting "based on" WW1), but not touch on those "icky parts"? I mean Violet being in the military as a child (and in combat roles) sounds even worse to me, so it would have to be removed as well, I guess? It might feel like I'm coping, but I didn't notice those "problems" at first. Because I knew about arranged Marriages in Royalty from my studies and I have bunch of.... friends is maybe to strong word, but acquaintances who were child soldiers, including some Women. And some of them were in relationships with people they fought alongside with. Often the only people who would understand what other one had gone through. As sad as it is, this things still happen.
