How many more movies are there? Looking forward to something else soon!

REDR58

This is the last of the existing Mission Impossible movies that are available for at least a year or more.

Hayley Atwell being his daughter would be a great twist. They are both pickpockets, both wear similar outfits on the train etc, but it would be hell of a coincidence they bumped into each other for this mission

I didn't interpret Ethan saying he cares for her and will put her life ahead of his own having anything to do with Grace being a love interest or daughter. He only just met her and if she was his daughter, he'd have no way of knowing. I saw it more about her becoming a part of the IMF (he was trying to recruit her talking about making a choice), and as a member of his team he will put their life before his life, as he has shown in past movies.

At the start you were asking about Chris McQuarrie and his relationship with Cruise and at the end you asked at what point the franchise shifted into one overarching narrative. McQuarrie and Cruise first worked together on the movie Valkyrie, at that time and for the majority of his career all Cruise movies were Cruise/Wagner productions. Part of hiring Tom Cruise to be the star of your movie meant hiring Cruise’s business partner Paula Wagner as a producer. Her job was making sure all the behind the scenes stuff was to Cruise’s liking; scripts, casting, scheduling, locations etc. When she retired after Valkyrie she and Cruise asked McQuarrie to take on that roll as manager/confidant/creative collaborator hence the exclusive relationship. The Mission Impossible films are the main product of this relationship. Two incredibly wealthy and powerful middle aged men who love stunts and spy movies, who want to travel all over the world having crazy adventures, are making these films primarily for their own benefit. Tom wants to fly a helicopter so Chris writes him a helicopter chase. They want to go to Venice so they design a scene that’ll show off as much of Venice as possible. If they weren’t both great at what they do it wold be gross but I personally think it’s what makes the series work so well and feels different from their competitors. They’re big budget studio pictures with an auteur sensibility.

George… Early in the reaction commentary, you recognized Indira Varma as having played Niobe on HBO’s Rome. While I’m glad you’ve seen that amazing show… it’s disheartening to know that having already seen Rome means we will never get to see you and Simone react to it. 🙁

As a huge MI fan, the new MI was a huge disappointment for me. Second worst in the franchise, after MI 2 or maybe worst. SPOILERS AHEAD: Didn't like the new female character played by Hayley Atwell, didn't like her acting, didn't like the bad guy (who looks like a mean fashion mogul from France) and his wooden monologues, the plot was really confusing compared to the other films, they suddenly introduced things out of Ethan's past that have never been mentioned, some of the CGI is dead obvious (unlike in earlier MI films where it's very well done), the old team was pushed to the sidelines in favor of this new annoying thief character by Atwell. She betrays Ethan several times for petty gains, Ethan has no reason to respect her as much as he suddenly does. The car chase in the yellow car was just goofy in a bad way. Didn't like the female henceman either, trying too hard to be edgy. Even some of the stunts were boring (fight on a rooftop of a train, very original) and the better ones had been spoiled in the Behind The Scenes footage. Even the motorcycle jump (however amazing in real life) looked bad because the CGI cliff they used to replace the IRL ramp, would have crashed him instantly. His bike can't gather speed on a surface like that. The worst scene must be the one at the club, where they have some kind of weird staring contest, it was meant to build tension, but it was ridiculous and didn't work at all. I also despise them for killing off one of the best characters (Ilsa Faust) who dies really easily. To make room for this new stupid thief by Atwell. Also the way how the beloved comedic relief, Benji, was pushed to the sidelines, he had almost no funny lines or moments. Everything was done so that this stupid Atwell with her bad acting could take the spotlight. She looks like she's about to laugh in every scene, even when they're supposed to be dramatic. Very weird acting. Even if she has a nice face, she has no place in this franchise. Can't believe TC messed this so badly, after four excellent MI movies and Top Gun. Maybe it was a Covid thing In the end, I started just ignoring the silly plot, and waiting for the stunts. The AI theme is very current and in theory a good idea, but the execution wasn't. Maybe Part II will be better and tie it together somehow, but I'm not holding my breath.
