For some reason I never noticed before how much this movie reminds me of the Kids in the Hall's Brain Candy. (Speaking of Canadians.) Which is a FANTASTIC black comedy - I have no idea why it bombed, I think it's got some of their best stuff in it. Highly recommend it!

Fyi, the whole “V chip” is sort of based on a real thing: there was a push by people similar to Kyle’s mom to require all televisions to be equipped with a chip to censor foul language and anything else with a rating. But that was for *televisions* - not individual kids. It was the same people that’d pushed for the “Explicit Content” sticker to be added to CDs (mainly hip hop, because really the fear’s always been racial and cultural not linguistic), so it wasn’t a fringe idea. I think Al Gore’s wife or someone similarly was trying to make it happen, so it had some fairly high profile backing. Obviously, the South Park guys in particular thought it was a dumb fucking idea, and - among other things - made this movie to skewer it. Also, the stickers on the CDs just increased sales, because of course it did. And through it all, nobody thought to just handle their shit like adults and just attack Canada.

Umm... Hate to be that guy, but it was primarily heavy metal that brought about what the industry refers to as the Tipper Sticker (after Tipper Gore). Rap hadn't really exploded yet. That's why Dee Snider was on the stand at the hearing, alongside Frank Zappa and John Denver. The Rap Lyrics controversy didn't really kick off until the mid-90s. WHich was basically a rehashing of what happened in the 80s with heavy metal.

FYI, South Park started literally as cut out construction paper... Stone & Parker were hired to make a "Christmas Card" video, which was like 4 minutes and had the kids with Jesus and Santa fighting each other... it got copied and passed around Hollywood, and got them the show.
