Car chase movies were a whole thing back in the day, particularly in the 70s/80s. Some recommendations: Smokey and the Bandit - classic Burt Reynolds The Driver (big influence on Drive; also great) Dirty Mary Crazy Larry Gone in 60 Seconds (the original, not the Nic Cage one) Vanishing Point (referenced in Tarantino's own car movie Death Proof, which is sooo underrated & you need to watch)

One could claim two of the seminal movies with their car chases were Bullitt (1968, Steve McQueen) and The French Connection (1971, Gene Hackman). Here is C'était un rendez-vous, the legendary 1976 eight-minute feature by Claude Lelouch consisting of a high-speed drive through an empty Paris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilR93GwSYEA

I enjoyed the OctoKrool brothers' theological reaction to the mall destruction scene: https://youtu.be/shGvl68fiRQ?t=692

the thumbnail...be-yoo-ti-ful!

Simone showing off her hairy chest and mutton chops, while wearing lipstick and Ray Bans, somehow...that works.

@Happy Hanukkah - absolutely, those are basically the two cinema car chases that kicked it all off and against which all others have always been measured. Bullitt's chase is particularly iconic because of the dark green Mustang he's driving, and obviously the fact that it's through the hills of San Francisco. I'm ashamed, as a movie buff, to admit that I've actually never watched The French Connection. I'm also ashamed as a fan of the Popeye's chicken franchise, since it was named for Gene Hackman's character, Popeye Doyle (that's not even me making a joke; that is literally how that restaurant got its name).

Happy Hanukkah

I admit that I myself saw The French Connection for the first time very recently. For such a classic and acclaimed movie, it seems to me to have unjustly sunk into relative obscurity.

Grrr. Spent like 2 minutes trying to sync up to realize i'm watching the youtube cut.

Robert Cooper

W/R/T collateral damage -- This was definitely making fun of 70s action/comedy stuff where crashing old police cars was like 50% of the budget for a movie. Also, the mall scene was filmed at a mall that was going to be mostly demolished/heavily renovated.

You mentioned several times that the film style/quality seemed to shift suddenly in some scenes, as though it was shot differently. I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure you watched the Extended Cut version and those were the scenes originally deleted from the theatrical film. They really DID show up differently.

Peter Dillard

The restaurant owner was Aretha Franklin.

It's also worth noting, signing with an X was, yes, kind of a sign of illiteracy. "make your mark" was a Jed Clampet thing from The Beverly Hillbillies. Around the time this movie came out, though, you also had the first music video with conspicuous product placement, and it became a joke on its own. https://youtu.be/j8CcTYsMHYU

Can you do a Brendan Frasier poll? 🇨🇦🤭💯💯🤞👍👌

Brandon Meng

Only if it includes Scrubs all the way through the Brendan Frasier character arc.

You should watch Animal House.

@21:17 " I can confirm that the phrase "We're on a mission from God" is said by Dan Aykroyd's character, Elwood Blues, three times throughout the film."

Take a skit on SNL that's beloved and write it out as a movie. Silly, sometimes crude and nothing more than giving a loyal audience more of what they enjoy. This film introduced many people to Blues music and revitalized some of the great musicians of our times. I really enjoyed watching this. Thanks. I'm sure I'll be watching Coneheads and Stripes now that you turned that rock over.

Middy

It's written in the script a total of five times, but I don't have time to check against the film right now.
