As for the kids using the gun, I guess in many ways, for many people, it was normal. My dad tells a story of a girl he went to highschool with. She was tasked every day of bringing money from her parents' business to the bank, and would take this money to school with her to drop it off afterwards. To protect herself, and this money, she also carried a gun. To school. Every day. Why she couldn't, y'know, grab the money after school was over and then drop it off is unclear to me lol.

I love that King wrote one book that collected four novellas that spawned Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption, plus a third less successful movie called Apt Pupil. Three movies out four stories is not a bad batting average, especially when two are considered modern classics.

I'm in Missouri, and people carrying guns is completely normal, even today, and especially back in the 50s & 60s. Like you said, every other day you read a story of accidental shootings, it's because having guns around is so normal. I have one, but just because my dad gave it to me as a gift, and I don't even have ammo for it.

I would also recommend Parenthood. It's not River, but it's Keanu and Joaquin (along with a freaking murderer's row of actors and comedians). River was spectacular. I wish he had gotten a chance to do a young Indiana Jones movie, after how good he was in Last Crusade.

I live in Texas and as much as it's disconcerting to me, as a non-native Texan (I grew up in northern Vermont so I'm basically Canadian, right down to my mom's family being from Quebec), I see people wearing guns all the time. I can barely go to the grocery store without seeing someone open carrying. So I can't even imagine how things must have been back during the time this movie is set.

I'm in California so seeing open carry is the weirdest thing ever. While visiting Death Valley National Park, the closest hotel I could find was in Pahrump, NV and while at a Starbucks, saw a dude open carrying and it was something that I can never get used to.

It's rural Oregon in the 1950s-so with bears and mountain lions, etc totally normal for them to have a gun on their trip-although they should have had a rifle not a hand gun.

Electroshock therapy is actually very effective, safe and humane at treating a lot of mental disorders. (acute depression, for one.) It works by causing seizures that induce neuroplasticity, so that after it's over you can form new neural connections. It just got a backlash because seeing somebody strapped down and convulsing to avoid hurting themselves looks really scary, so it got a really bad depiction in a lot of movies.

As a responsible gun owner it totally makes me nervous that these kids are playing around with a gun like that. Just because many of us are into guns doesn't mean we're okay with things like that. Gun safety is something most of us take very seriously.
