Persnickity

I personally am indifferent if y'all ate quietly on camera. My problem is I want to know what your eating or I sit there guessing

Simone has the right of it, D.S.S. is Department of Social Services. They issue welfare debit cards rather than giving the money to people so they can monitor the purchases and ensure only legitimate items are bought, but they don't have enough people to monitor all of the cards. I would be shocked if they have the manpower to audit 10% of the cards.

I’m only good with them eating on camera if, while they do it, they make unblinking, emotionless eye contact with the camera and remain absolutely silent with every bite.

- Last of the Mohicans is a 19th century novel that is frequently required reading in American schools. It doesn't seem likely it would be on a standardized test, though, since they can't expect everyone to have read it beforehand. Questions to do with reading in those tests usually *give* you a passage to read before you answer questions. - Gah, Irreversible! A really good movie that I never want to see again. - I don't mind you guys eating on camera; I don't get the complaints unless there are grody chewing noises, which you seem to be trying to avoid anyway.

One of the biggest influences of the show is greek mythology. Where often its common men vs Gods beyond their comprehension. David Simon think the modern Gods are the systems portrayed in the show - police, drug trade, school, politics and media. Those are the enemies against the characters and they always will be and will never be defeated. Thats the main thesis of the show in order for any change to happen one must first defeat the impossible.

Jeff K

And, of course... this is Baltimore, gentlemen. The gods will not save you.

Omar actually started his war with Stringer and Avon just like he did with Marlo, he robbed them first, the stash where D'Angelo and the boys were working. They went after Omar and his boys because of that. Also, just want to add my vote for you watching all 3 of the last episodes together :).

As for characters who do the most damage Herc should be on that list. In that single scene where Herc is attempting to interrogate Little Kevin he inadvertently messes up (at least) four people’s life’s because he is bad at his job. Randy gets revealed as a snitch, Little Kevin gets killed, he screws over Bubbles making his situation worse, and because of that Bubs sabotages Herc (who is already on thin ice). And more people could probably be added to the list just because of that one scene. Herc is my least favorite main character on the show (Namond’s mom is up there but she is a supporting character) and season 4 (specifically that scene) is the main reason why! He is a idiot who always seems to fail upwards and hurts everyone around him. He drives me mad. Carver and Prez were in the same boat in the first season but they grew into really fascinating characters (especially Mr. Prezbo).

Young Blood Priest

Herc is the worst. Lives were affected because he didn’t want to take responsibility for a fucking camera.

Hey everybody, what's up? I'm wondering if The Wire is a show that I should jump into or not. I've never watched an episode and I'm wanting to know if it's a solid series that'll get me hooked on it. Lemme know! :)

Well I think it's the greatest TV show ever made...... by a distance, but that's just me. And I probably haven't seen 99.99999% of TV shows ever made:)

Jay

How infuriating is that superintendent lady at the school? It's people like her, propping up an obviously failed system that ensure the bullshit will continue.

YoureMrLebowski

has the next tv series reaction been determined?

I can't believe that Rawls had to see it made explicit that he was never going to be head of the department, especially by a white mayor. One thing I never thought of him was that he was clueless.

dys

Simone pretty much got it but DSS = Department of Social Services, it's a welfare card.

Fun fact - Tristan Wilds (Michael) and Jermaine Crawford (Dukie) got on really well on set, after a while they realized they were actually second cousins. They had never met before the show. Small world:)

So the school testing thing is a ripped-from-the-headlines bit about NCLB, the No Child Left Behind Act, which was passed by Congress in 2001 (GW Bush announced it 3 days after taking office), and went into effect at the start of 2002, right as this season was probably being filmed. It enforced identification of failing schools through relentless standardized testing (which cost a lot, and wasn't subsidized, and put a burden on underfunded schools). It required deep reporting, broken down by race. Then the government prescribed fixes to lift the schools up, which, IIRC, didn't work. It was in effect for 13 years, and was a real hot button issue, especially in the early years, because it lead to teachers only teaching not just what would be on the many tests, but literally teaching exact answers to exact questions, which kids were just memorizing for the sake of passing. I remember a lot of news coverage for a long time, and a lot of angry parents, a lot of teachers who hated it, blame going in all directions - the whole thing was a bit of a mess.

Small correction - this season would have been filmed in 2005-2006 or so.

I became a patron of you guys for my first watchthrough of this show and this season is by far the most heartbreaking season I've ever seen.
