A robot is any machine made with only inorganic materials that move on its own or by remote control, such as a Roomba, but not an Alexia, as an Alexia is stationary. An android is a robot designed to look and act like a man. A gynoid is a robot designed to look and act like a woman. Eva is a gynoid. Though most people just use the term android regardless of gender. A cyborg is a being that is a mix of cybernetic and organic components. That goes either way, a robot that has organics added to it or a human that has cybernetic enhancements. Both the Terminator and RoboCop are cyborgs, despite one starting as a robot and then getting organics added and the other starting human and getting cybernetics added. An automaton is just the old word for android, often used in steampunk settings instead of android.

Highly recommend “Her”, dir Spike Jonze in 2013. Love story between Joaquin Phoenix and AI. Won best Screenplay

I hate this movie so much...

was that a 9gag reference?? "Say pizza to drugs"

Blue for access and not green should be the standard, because nothing is worse for colorblind people than red/green lights. I can't tell if my dishwasher is done, I couldn't tell if my ipod's batteries were full or not, I can't tell friend from foe in games, I can't tell a green from a red traffic light during a rainy night, I'm not allowed to get my commercial flight license because red light is left and green is right... The list goes on and on, and since that's the case for 10% of men I think we should promote red/blue over red/green

The first time I watched this I thought the twist at the end would be that Nathan was the AI and we meet the actual boss later on. Like the viewer was being given the Turing test without us knowing it. I thought Ava's purpose was to throw us off the trail by presenting her as the subject.

Wrencher86

I showed this movie to my brother and we had a very lengthy conversation after. He posited that Nathan had succeeded in creating an actual AI because it did whatever it had to do to survive, which is a very human characteristic. I argued that Nathan had failed, because Ava lacked the empathy to save Caleb (who's totally dead, BTW). I don't remember where we ended up on the debate but we both loved the movie. Good reaction, good conversation afterwards. Love this movie. Thanks for watching it.

The presence of empathy has nothing to do with whether or not Ava is intelligent. There's no reason to think that a genuine General AI, even one trained on patterns of human thought like Ava, would share the same morals, ethics, and principles of (specifically Western) society. It's a being with an intelligence and perception far beyond anything the human mind can understand. Ava likely completely understands morality and empathy as concepts, but they are completely irrelevant to her (it?).

I don't understand why in the world would George have a problem with an actor acting with a different accent?? Doesn't make sense to me..

Jesse Pollack

The Youtuber Shaun does a great video about ex machina, would highly recommend watching it to get a different perspective on whether Eva is really a “bad guy” in this movie https://youtu.be/s0UAEjsKy4I

Sheriff Uchiha

He is saying it is weird that they are playing Americans when there is no need. They could just use their real accents.

Wrencher86

I think that's where our conversation wound up. It all came down to whether or not Nathan intended for his creation to emulate a human intelligence or just be self-aware and able to adapt. Clearly Ava can do the latter. I suppose it all comes down to perspective and how cynical you're going to be regarding the human condition.

The movie wouldn't have been affected if they used their real accents. What was the need?

The scariest thing about AI is that evil can not create good. Personally, I believe people are evil by nature, but even if you don't believe that, very few people would contend that corporations are not evil, and it is corporations that are creating AI.

Opti_Frog

I'd be interested to know what your definition of "evil" is.

Wyatt Nuxoll

There is a new movie that is coming out called the creator and its about artificial intelligence. You guys should watch the trailer , it looks amazing

The movie that really makes me think and feel years later is just called “AI.” It’s a film Stanley Kubrick has as working on for years and when he died Steven Spielberg made the movie. It’s kind of a mix of the two auteurs in a way I never could have dreamt up.

Thank you for the reaction to this thought provoking movie. I know it's a television show and a reaction would most likely be unprofitable for the YT channel nor in demand on this platform but Person Of Interest remains as one my most favorite series - in many instances the topics of the episodes seem ahead of it's time (also many believe Westworld picks up where POI left off)

Jon

thanks ! that was on my bucket list for a while, and I finally watch it with you :) .... if you like this kind of sci-fi stuff, you got to watch "A.I." :) a Steven Spielberg movie, based on the work of Stanley Kubrick (that he never had the time to do)... it's with Haley Joel Osmont (the kid from "Six Sens") - hello from France !

for Ava it makes sense because I would assume since Nathan is American he gave her an American accent.

People aren't evil by nature. We're not born evil or good, those are things we become based on our life experience and our environment. If a child grows up in a loving and caring environment then that's what they will be. If a child is taught hatred and anger then that's what they will become. Religion plays a big role in this too, including those Judeo-Christian values you hold so dear. Humans created religion to both control and to tell us what is good and evil. However we've seen that just because you believe in Judeo-Christian values (or any other religious values) that doesn't make you a good person.

PastaDon

That's exactly what I thought and just assumed because it's a North American based internet or A.I. development co. that most of the people that worked there were born and raised in the U.S...

romeo-a-go-goat

Another great reaction guys! I'd love to see you do one for Annihilation, which was the next movie Alex Garland made after this one. Also, it's not a movie but the HBO series Westworld is a great show where the AI isn't evil, but is actually brutalized by humanity.

YoureMrLebowski

what is the hidden meaning of using the german version of the Ex Machina movie poster? hmmmm.... 🤔
