Wow, you are on a roll watching all my favorites lately! <3 <3 <3

FranciscoGios

This one was having a show down with Charlie Sheen’s Hot Shots! Part Deux, that’s all I remembered. Also the Godfather scene was hilarious; it’s fun re-watching this movies with you guys.

I think the longer pauses are basically laugh breaks for when people watch it in theaters. Otherwise you wouldn't hear the next line. Of course watching it alone at home makes these pauses kind of awkward. ^^ The "english accent" line was a jab at Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood. Prince of thieves". Watch that one if you want to get 90% of the jokes here. ;) It has Alan Rickman as the Sherrif - it's great :D Cary Elwes smiley demeanor here is mostly a reference to the classic Errol Flynn Robin Hood films.

I jotted down notes as I watched :-D The "Unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent" was poking fun of Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which came out 2 years earlier. "A mime is a terrible thing to waste" at the beginning of the castle dinner scene was a riff on "A mind is a terrible thing to waste," which was the tagline of a bunch of UNCF (United Negro College Fund) commercials in the 70s and 80s. Ahchoo's "We didn't land on Sherwood Forest... Sherwood Forest landed on us," was a Malcolm X quote from his 1964 "The Ballot or the Bullet" speech, but it was Plymouth Rock. The "Hey Abbot!" (Abbot: "I hate that guy") was from Abbott and Costello. In their vaudeville routines and movies Lou Costello would yell Bud Abbott's name exaggeratedly like that. I don't recognize Mervyn as anything more than a name they thought sounded nerdy. The only Mervyn I can think of in the US was a department store - Mervyn's.

I never noticed that the crossbow sniper is in the "royal folio depository". That's dark. :D In terms of other Mel Brooks movies, I'd say the best ones are "Spaceballs", "Robin Hood" and "History of the World: Part 1" There is also "Dracula - Dead and loving it" which is okay but probably the worst of his parody movies. It has Leslie Nielsen though, who is always great.

Anodyne

Said with respect, you missed a huge number of funny lines because you hadn't watched Prince of Thieves before this. Always, always, always watch the movies Mel Brooks is satirizing before you watch his movie.

Yes. the Patriot arrow was a Patriot missile gag. They were in the public consciousness at the time because of their highly-publicized use against Iraqi Scud missiles during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (i.e. the first Iraq war.) Also, the extended cut of Prince of Thieves makes Latrine's infatuation with the Sheriff... problematic.

Funny That

Or rather they where not and hence the jokes back in the day. Patriots are good for tanks, troops, and probably helicopters, but anything moving at the speeds of fighter jets or SCUDs... nah. Some of the SCUDs where duds, but the Israelis government couldn't admit that it was just taking hits (for the western alliance of the day) without the populous understandably loosing their shit.

Ahh, it's been long enough that I can remember their presence in pop culture, but forgotten the context.

Tanx

the crowd at the contest was doing "the Chop" it was something the crowds at Atlanta Braves and Florida Seminoles games would do to rally the team. was huge back in the 90s especially when both had really good teams. and as someone already said there was a ton of jokes about the 90s Costner movie where he couldn't even bother to fake an accent...probably better than trying and failing like Dick Van Dyke did with Mary Poppins. Cristian Slater also didn't try faking an accent in the Costner movie either. you two should still watch it. some of the scenes will make you laugh after the fact.

I’ve heard they’ve done Silver streak already but haven’t uploaded it yet 👌🏻

Lyle Morgan

Mel Brooks had really lost his fastball by this point. Mediocre comedy at best.

For some reason I never caught the Home Alone joke. Thanks Simone :)

I've always been told that the "right of the lord," "right of the first night," etc. was just a myth but I did some preliminary research (fortunately) it doesn't appear to be a real thing
