Ginger

Yay, I've been waiting for this one. (Heart)

I still think Cutthroat Island is underrated. Way better than CGI Pirates of the Carribean bs

I've had the complete book series on my list for a while now, This movie is based on the 10th out of 20 books. So there's quite a bit of backstory as well as many events that happen afterwards. Too bad this didn't get a sequel (yet). About the singing scene: I always thought when everyone goes silent when he keeps singing it's because they consider him too "effeminate" (these times being what they are) but it's an interesting thought that the problem might be that he's too friendly with the common sailors, which is why they don't respect him. On the other hand, nobody likes a tyrant. There are a couple of very interesting social dilemmata in this film.

I've always interpreted the singing scene as them feeling like someone they don't like, respect, or want around is insisting on trying to push his way into their good time. Like, they stop because they're like, "Is this guy serious? What the hell is he even doing here?" Wildly different setting obviously but it reminds me of the episode of The Office where Jim is having a party, does not invite Michael, but Michael catches wind and shows up anyway and everyone from the office is just in stunned disbelief that he forced himself into their fun when they very decidedly did not want him there.

Master and Commander is based on the exploits of Thomas Cochrane, who the French called the Sea Wolf. Cochrane actually painted his ship to ambush his adversary and even put a candle on some barrels to lead another ship away from them.

JBK405

They HAD to raise the flag before firing their first shots in the final battle, otherwise it would have been classified as piracy. If that had been the case, if this crew were ever captured by any French ship they could have all been executed without trial and there would have been no objections from any other nation. Provided you raise the flag before literally firing the first shot, it doesn't matter what other deceptions you did beforehand. Raising the flag makes it War, not Piracy. On the topic of just wanting a whole story of exploring and adventuring like this, we HAVE gotten that: It's called "Star Trek". The Aubrey-Maturin series was one of the inspirations for the original Trek series, and you can absolutely see the basis for James T. Kirk and Spock in the Captain and Doctor here. EDIT: And you were dead-on about the compass directions. North-West means you go halfway between North and West, North by North-West means you go halfway between North and North-West (So more closely straight North). It's how you give more precise directions.

Thumbnail watch: George, Regency dress becomes you.

Might be the only time I can think of when a perfectly written book was butchered by the Hollywood machine, and they still managed to turn out an amazing movie anyway.

If you enjoyed this movie the Hornblower series is similar to this but with a lower budget. There's a Tasting History that explains grog and hardtack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPTdSMOQRnY

Grog is rum and water. It is named for Admiral Vernon, who introduced it to the Royal Navy. He was known to the hands as "Old Grog" for the grogram cloak he always wore. (Simone is right, by the way -Dr. Maturin is a spy, though it doesn't factor into this story).

Danika Silva

I can't get the Family Guy cutscene out of my head 🤭

JayF

One of those "whenever they finally get to it, they'll love it" movies. I'm glad you both enjoyed it.

Cubonemaker

I’ll try not to spam it, promise. But any. Chance we could get Whiplash back on polls? 😄😅

Please react to Adventures of Tintin : Secret of the unicorn. Its directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson. Its really very good

You guys need to see the movie that made Russell Crowe a superstar, the great crime film, "L.A. Confidential"(1997).
