If you like boat kino like that, check out the "Hornblower" movies. They are based on a series of famous novels and depict the life and career of a young man from first setting foot on a ship, his first command and onwards. He becomes quite good at what he does, later :) You can read the imdb stuff and such, spoilers wont ruin the series for you. While the production is great (the ship and all that), I didn't yet find a version yet that has 100% of the christal clear picture of modern cinema. It is very much centered on character development. Heres a list of the movies: The Even Chance (U.S. title: The Duel) (7 October 1998) The Examination for Lieutenant (U.S. title: The Fire Ship) (18 November 1998) The Duchess and the Devil (24 February 1999) The Frogs and the Lobsters (U.S. title: The Wrong War) (2 April 1999) Mutiny (8 April 2001) Retribution (15 April 2001) Loyalty (5 January 2003) Duty (6 January 2003)

They _did_ actually plan to make sequels based on the book series and turn it into a franchise, but for various reasons the studio decided up push back the release of the movie to November of 2003,which resulted in it premiering after the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie and straight into the teeth of the last of the Lords of the Rings movies just two weeks later. That one two punch pretty much took the box office wind right out of its sales and it ended up barely breaking even, which killed the chances for a sequel despite everybody on the cast and crew really wanting to make them. Just bad luck and one of the great missed opportunities of modern cinema. There's also a superb making of documentary youtube that shows the insane lengths Weir and his crew went through to make the movie as historically accurate a depiction of life on a british man-o-war during the napoleonic era as humanly possible. Highly watchable in its own right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVqyJqFiaqY

I know you've both watched the Lord of the Rings movies but I'd love a Patreon watchalong of the Extended Editions (I know... they're damn long movies...) just so we can hear Simone singing along to Billy Boyd :D

Odd Thomas

I was just thinking some LOTR watchalongs would be awesome, even though they've seen the films. It would be fun to hear their thoughts

So glad you enjoyed this one. This and Children of Men are two of my favourite films of the 2000s that don't have Lord of the Rings in the title. There was a good chance this would have won the Best Picture Oscar in 2004 but it came up against Return of the King... Russell Crowe was unlucky and got robbed of being in Oscar winning films with this and LA Confidential (which you should watch!) Some of what you see happening in this film is taken from real history, specifically that of Thomas Cochrane, a British naval captain who was the inspiration for Aubrey and who was famous for brilliantly taking on and defeating enemy ships that were must larger than his or using clever ploys to evade capture himself such as that one with the barrels with the lights on. In a way you were right about Mr Hollom getting his place on the ship because of money/class. Most officers did at that time, their commissions bought by their families and sent there as children to learn the trade. At the age of 30, Mr Hollom was well beyond the age at which he should still have been a Midshipman (essentially an apprentice officer) so the crew would have known he was a failure.

This movie is a bit of a mashup of several of the O'Brian books - even the title combines two book titles, "Master and Commander" was the first book in the series, and "Far Side of the World" the tenth book. Events in the movie came from other books in the series as well. In the books, the "mystery ship" that served as the protagonist was actually American, not French. The studio changed it so not to confuse/anger us silly Yanks with the Americans being the bad guys.

This is way up there as one of my favorite movies in general, but LA Confidential is, without a doubt, one of my favorite top 10 films of all time. I gotta also recommend it.

LA Confidential is my current ”every time CB publish a video or a poll, I hope it’s LA Confidential!” movie.

Not related to “Master & Commander”, but as a German faithful in all things CineBinge I would be very glad if you would consider adding this years Oscar-winning “All quiet on the western front” to your watchlist. Best regards from Saxony, Christopher

That was great! I've been meaning to see this movie since 2003, when I saw this gigantic billboard in Hollywood. https://signsofthetimes.com/master-wrap/

I'm glad you liked it! This movie is a history buff's wet dream, as it is not only very well researched and historically accurate, but also just a great movie. These sadly don't often go hand in hand in the historic movie genre.

Sorry if this is already mentioned but want to recommend the YT channel History Buffs, episode about Master & Commander. That video will explain alot with emphasis on historical accuracy :) Great to see you love this movie :)

Finally watching. The Master is a wild movie is essentially the origin of Scientology, but as distinct as it can be to not get sued. Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely demolishes the role. It’s incredible for that.
