Joss Whedon and the cast did a ton of panels at SDCC, NerdHQ and other Conventions over the years talking about behind the scenes of the show and movie, answering fan questions and talking about why they weren't able to bring the show back even as the fan base was exploding. Vids of these panels can still be found on YT and are worth the watch if, like the rest of us browncoats, you love this crew and are still a bit crushed that this show got cancelled. edit: Disclaimer - Those panels contain a lot of spoilers for Chuck, Castle, and other shows/movies the cast was involved in before and after Firefly, so watch with discretion.

My thoughts on why they killed Wash was because they set the stage for the final showdown where you really didn't know who would live or die. Most of the time you think that the main characters can't be killed off, but by them killing Wash, you really had no idea who might be next and it made the final act that much more intense.

Robert Cooper

I think it is also just a Whedonism. He likes rather unceremoniously killing people in movies.

Dooly

Almost as much as he likes harassing his actresses.

George Baxter

I would argue that this is a final movie and you need to go big, establish real stakes, subvert expectations. How could there not be consequences to taking on the Alliance?? When Whedon kills people its purposefully random: Coulson brought the Avengers together in every sense, by seeking them out and by finally giving them something personal to Avenge. Wash is the heart of the crew, he's represents so much of their innocence and this is them coming together to take on their greatest nemesis'.

George Baxter

I've always felt that the operative sent to take down the crew basically represents Shephard Book and his backstory. Its not a coincidence that he knows the assassin's characteristics so well... One of this film's themes is belief. The Operative believe's in a better world. Mal shows him the consequences of forcing that on people. When the Operative loses his belief what does he do? Find God?? Go into an imperfect world in search of that?? Sounds like a young Book to me.

Thomas Yanez

Or, you know, since she said she was going to be reading the comics, you could have let her find out on her own.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

Some of the actors were unable to make a return if a new series got greenlit after the movie, which is why they made those decisions for their characters.

Robert Haynes

100% agree. Apparently there's some comics that go into Book's backstory and he's some kind of spy, but that always felt wrong to me.

Thank you guys so much for Indulging Us but if you’d like Allan to you should see “ death at a funeral “ and if you want to see more Nathan work that’s pretty funny and he does firefly references on the show is Castle

Nathan told this joke on a panel with Alan - “How do reavers clean their spears? They run them through a Wash.” Interestingly, when they started doing Firefly Nathan and Alan realized they kinda already knew each other. Alan was a waiter in Nathan’s favorite burrito place in NY when Alan was at Juliard and Nathan was doing soaps.

I don't know if it's been posted but I found a great resource for the extended Firefly Universe here: https://www.comicbooktreasury.com/serenity-firefly-reading-order-comics-joss-whedon/

I might get into them but I don't know... I still have thousands of comics and novels to read

Not one mention of how River/Summer MOVES? Guys, guys, I love you but you'd been watching this all wrong :D

***Spoilers!!!***The movie hints at it (I suspected as soon as I watched it, myself), and the comics later confirm it - but Zoë is pregnant with Wash's child. Her and Wash had a conversation about kids earlier in the film, and if you watch Zoë at the end during the funeral scene, she strokes her belly - ever so slightly. In fact, the comics also had a complete backstory for Shepherd Book. Finally, there is a fan-film out there called "Browncoats: Redemption" that was made for charity and takes place post-Serenity timeline with cameos from some of the secondary actors from the show. I could go on for days about the Firefly universe, but I am an original fan from the original airings on Fox. I remember I bailed on my friends who wanted to go out to the bars so I could stay home and watch Firefly.
