I'm not military, but I do sort of think that the DI persona is one they put on. I've seen interviews with Ermey and he actually seems quite pleasant when he doesn't have to yell at hapless recruits. One person who you wouldn't think was a sergeant was Bob Ross, yes, the soft spoken guy who painted on PBS. I don't think he was a DI but he was a sergeant and it apparently involved a lot of yelling at people. Part of the reason he started the painting show was because he didn't want to yell at people ever again.

As a former military member, yes this is the most accurate portrayal of Recruit Training I’ve seen. Except, they cannot touch you. There are other ways of making you pay physically and mentally though…

do more kubrick please. should try his comedy "dr strange love or: how i learned to stop worrying and love the bomb"

The no touching rules started being implemented in the 80's. I don't know if straight-on gut punches were allowed before this, but there was definitely a lot of physicality before that (from what I've read).

The origin of the term 'Charlie' comes from the ICAO alphabet ... (A) lpha, (B) ravo, (C) harlie, (D) elta, and on up to (Z) ulu ... the Viet Cong were the 'VC' or Victor Charlie ... later shortened to just Charlie

Rob Church

Bob Ross was a Drill Instructor if I'm not mistaken.

A thing to keep in mind is that the boot camp story line is set in 1967 and senior marine corps NCOs of Ermey's age group (he was 42 at the time of filming) would all still have been WWII veterans who'd likely experienced, and survived, the extremely brutal no quarters fighting in the pacific theater. Their ideas of how best to prepare young recruits for the realities of wartime service would be _very_ much more shall we say 'hands on' than their successors of the post-Vietnam era from the 1980ies on.

When Joker is doing the interview saying about he "wants to be the first kid on his block to get a kill" he's being sarcastic.

Adding to the list. "Good Morning, Vietnam".

I like how Adam Baldwin chooses to be in a lot of sci-fi and videogames

R Lee Ermey also spoofed his persona in "The Frighteners" as a ghost drill Sgt trying to whip the other ghosts into shape. actually one of my fave underseen/appreciated movies. although you are subjected to a particularly mouthy Jake Busey. (as if there's any other kind of Busey, but still!) IMDb: : The Frighteners https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116365/
