The new, unannounced update to RDR2 that came out yesterday has made the mod unusable for some Patrons. This release is a hotfix that solves the issue. I took the opportunity to make my automatic game settings detection code more robust, so hopefully it should keep working if/when RDR2 gets updated again.

For those of you who bought the game from Epic or directly from Rockstar (i.e., not from Steam), let me remind you that the mod will only work correctly if your Windows account has write permission to the game folder: see step 2 in the README for further details. The update might have restored the default permissions, so if when you launch the game there is a red message at the top of your screen that says "Unable to save current options and log files" and that never goes away, you know what to do ;-)

Thanks Luke for all of your hard work getting on top of these updates. I appreciate your efforts a bunch.

Anonymous

Thanks for the quick fix, will try it tonight!

Anonymous

Just tried the mod and it's pretty impressive! I really appreciate your hard work 🙂. But I have one question, is it possible to turn off head-driven aiming?

Anonymous

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here... I have a Quest 2 and purchased the game on Steam. I did a fresh install and copied the new 1.4.4 hot fix mod files into my rdr2 directory. I ran the realconfig and used U. I then hooked up my oculus link cable and started the game, but it's not going into VR, I just get a 2d window of RDR2 in the oculus desktop view. I even tried running steam VR and then starting the game from steam VR, but it doesn't actually open it in steam VR. I'm also not getting the overlay when hitting the pause key. Can someone help me with what I'm doing wrong?

realvr

You don't need SteamVR, the mod has native support for Oculus. Please see the Troubleshooting post at https://www.patreon.com/posts/troubleshooting-51552016

Toshie27

I have now installed everything correctly and no more error messages, the picture is no longer so sharp and there are always streaks when moving because the headache, do I have to switch something on or off?

realvr

If everything is installed correctly you should finally have a valid RealVR64.log file, please put it on Pastebin so I can take a look

Toshie27

Yes, I have https://pastebin.com/1hVLrrGy

realvr

The log looks good. Please remind me, what VR headset are you using?

Toshie27

OK First of all, many thanks for the help, I'll test around a bit

SteveJustSteve

Is the old RunAsAdmin batch file still good for update ver?

realvr

Yes, it's been refreshed (you might need to download it again if you had kept an old version)

realvr

Thanks! Gaze-based aiming is a signature feature of all my mods, and it can't be turned off. There is simply no good alternative to it. It takes a few minutes to get used to, so at the beginning you might find it weird, but as soon as you get the hang of it you will find that it's much faster and more precise than traditional controller-based aiming.

I'm having a problem, I start steam vr with virtual desktop and my quest 2. After that I start the game and i get past the menu where you pick story and then when i reach the after loading thing the game stoping running in vr and goes into normal red dead 2d screen. Can someone help?

realvr

First of all, Virtual Desktop is not compatible with my mods. Second, you don't want to use SteamVR with the Quest 2, as the mod has native support for Oculus. Make sure to follow the steps detailed in the README.

Anonymous

Seems like this is ready for release. Very few people having issues now. There is one thing I'd like to ask if possible. I'm playing the game at a high resolution (3510) with DLSS, and at that res the sides of some menus are cut off. It would be great if you could fix this. Not sure if you can though as it could be an issue with the game's UI.

realvr

Hey Clell, thanks! You must have missed my replies to your comments for release 1.4.2. I'll just copy them here: "[...] Resolutions up to 2700x2700 inclusive are fine, any higher than that and it seems that the game is miscalculating how much space it has to draw the HUD. [...]" "I made a little QOL improvement to the mod: when you're using resolutions higher than 2700x2700 and the sidemenu is cut off to the left (for instance when selecting fast travel destinations), press the Menu button on the gamepad to enter RDR2's pause menu. When the game is paused, just press both thumbsticks to have the mod automatically switch to 2700x2700 resolution, then press Menu again to return to the game. That will allow you to read the sidemenu and perform interactions correctly. When you're done with the sidemenu, just do the same thing again: press Menu, then both thumbsticks, then Menu. The mod will revert to your favorite resolution."

Well, sorry for the bad news but all of a sudden I got a lot of game crash/hang. I'm using this mod from its early times with few issues here and there but now I can't progress more than 10mn before a crash to desktop occurs. Version 1.4.4 seems to behave worst than 1.4.3 but this may be just "bad luck". The freeze-mitigation seems to fail even on medium preset. I'm about at 56% of the main story when [spoiler alert...] Duch leads the band to Saint-Denis to rob a "last train". Maybe that's a problematic point in the game for the mod ? or has something gone wrong with my setup?

realvr

Hi Ghanth, thanks for the continuing support! I don't believe that to be a problematic point in the game; at least it wasn't for me, and for now I have no reports from other users about that mission. I'd suggest increasing the Antifreeze strength, at least until you pass the mission. Other things you might try: some users have reported improvements with the hangups by turning on Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows, or moving the game to an SSD.

Anonymous

It will not load into using Oculus link, i've launched from desktop and from Epic Launcher, nothing seems to work. It is only launching in 2d on the screen. Please help or refund!

realvr

Hey Christain, thanks for the support! Both Oculus Link and Epic version should work perfectly. Please check out the Troubleshooting post at https://www.patreon.com/posts/troubleshooting-51552016

Is there a fix or a setting for the double vision when using a gun with a scope? I basically get two slightly unaligned crosshairs, or unaligned background.

Anonymous

Great mod, made a post about it on reddit comparing it to Vorpx - https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/p6chdd/red_dead_2_vr_mod_comparison_lukeross_realvr_mod/

realvr

Thanks xops37! When you get the crashes, could you check what the last few lines of RealVR64.log say?

realvr

That's strange. Is it a very minor effect? Are you playing in mono or stereo?

Solomon Ginsberg

Just a heads up if anyone was wondering about the latest nvidia driver (dropped 18/8 I think). Tried it out for an hour with no issues so far. Also tried the new dlss update ”.16” which also worked fine, maaaaybe a slight visual improvement and a few extra fps. Allways welcome :)

realvr

Thank you Solomon, a bit of good news is always welcome!!!

Anonymous

Not sure if anyone else has had this issue but when the game launches it's still in third person but everything is still running as intended. I followed the instructions so I'm not sure what caused it. Playing via steamvr with index through the rockstar launcher.

realvr

The game starts in third person the first time you play it (it was born as a console game after all!). As soon as you get control of your character, you can switch to 1st by using V on the keyboard or Back/Select on the gamepad. Also, make sure to check out the README for this and other relevant information!

Alright, I set it up to run comfortably at 144 fps in the city. However, whenever something moves very close to your face, e.g. a person walks by or you run and look down - it all becomes kind of jittery, as if you suddenly start experiencing severe fps drops. Everything at a distance looks perfect, and moves very fluidly. Motion smoothing doesn't do anything. Is it how it's supposed to be or is there an option to fix this?

realvr

Hi Miroslav, welcome! I doubt that you're actually getting 144 fps (especially in the city, which is the heaviest area for this game: much more demanding than the wilderness). I imagine that you set your Valve Index refresh to 144 Hz, but the actual frame rate that the game can achieve should be monitored using the mod overlay. Press Pause/Break on the keyboard to bring it up. Unless you have some supercomputer from the future, you should be getting around 70-80 fps at most in the city, even with an RTX 3090. The ghosting that you see is due to the difference between the frame rate that the headset expects (which in your case would be 144 frames per eye per second, so in fact 288 fps) and what the game can actually push out.

Anonymous

That's exactly what I thought. Your overlay displays 144 fps stable. The frame time is 54-55 ms (may be that's the issue)? I played around with various hz settings and in-game graphical settings. Set everything on low, resolution on the lowest possible. With different hz settings, I still get this jittering effect. In fact, speaking about fps, it only starts dropping below 144 when I set my resolution higher that 1080, and that's definitely noticeable. So this leads me to believe my fps is pretty stable at the current settings. Do you happen to know any other steps I could try to fix this jitter?

realvr

Please use the "Reply to comment" button to continue the thread. If what you see is jittering and not ghosting, the VR compositor might be skipping frames. Make sure that Motion Smoothing is Off (it doesn't work properly with alternate eye rendering), and try lowering the refresh rate to 120 or even 90. The ms are not the frame time but the total motion-to-photon latency of the system: as long as it stays under 70-80 ms it's fine. One other thing you could try is switching to Mono rendering. That effectively doubles the frame rate, but of course you won't have proper 3D. And finally, a quirk I've noticed only with SteamVR is that the compositor tends to work more reliably (less missed frames) if the SteamVR window is in the foreground instead of the game window. Other runtimes don't have the issue, so it's probably a scheduling problem with the Valve runtime.

Anonymous

Hi, I have same issue on the Oculus CV1. What overlays do I need to check off, bc steam's overlay is already disabled.

Cercata

Elliottate has discovered that Kingdom Come Deliverance has basic DK2 support integrated. That could be a good starting point for a talented modder that is looking for new games to port to VR ;) I have played the game with VorpX, and doesn't need many things, mainly edgepeak for seeing the whole menus

Anonymous

Hey Luke, out of nowhere the mod has stopped working for me. Played for hours last night with no issues but this morning when I start the game up it never loads into my headset. The game still starts on my monitor just fine but I'm just left staring at SteamVR Home in my headset. https://pastebin.com/HriLAjbR Scratch that! Forgot I had turned HDR on to play another game and forgot to turn it off. All good here now.

Anonymous

I'm not sure what changed between 1.43 and 1.4.4, but there was a mission where you save the reverend from the train tracks, and just after the cutscene, 1.4.4 would crash 100% of the time for me. I reverted back to 1.4.3, and it did not crash. Just FYI.

Anonymous

Hoping someone may be able to help. I was using the mod 1.4.3 and was great, then updated to 1.4.4 and now the screen refresh is really jumpy like the FPS is shot. It was fine before and haven't changed any other settings. Anyone any idea?

Andre Warringa

Since the latest RDD2 update I played around 20 hours and didn't have a single crash. Before that it was random, sometimes after 30 minutes, sometimes after an hour.

Anonymous

Is it possible to make sequential rotation to reduce juddering and motion sickness for this RDR VR mod.

realvr

There should be nothing in 1.4.4 that could cause more jittering. Perhaps it's something unrelated like a driver or other software update. Could you check with the mod overlay what FPS and latency you're getting?

realvr

Sorry for the delay in answering, Cercata! Did you play it in fake 3D? I remember trying it out initially with G3D but the shadows were misplaced, maybe they were fixed later on

Anonymous

1.4.4 crashed very frequently (usually at a scene/mission transition) until a switched to a medium setting for avoiding crashes, so that mechanism seems to be working! That said, I feel a little short (like I have no neck) in first person view, and there is *a lot* of judder while moving in any direction, though everything is very smooth when just turning my head. This is with an an RTX 2080ti and an Intel Core i9-9900K. Any recommendations? I'm currently using the Hub Optimized config.

realvr

Hi Keith, glad that the Antifreeze seems to be doing its job! If the game's first person camera feels a bit low, you might work around that by recentering with your physical head held a little lower than normal, so when you stretch back up the camera will move to a more comfortable position. For the judder, it might just be the effect of AER, or it might be something else: which headset are you using? What frame rate and latency do you get?

Anonymous

Is there a way to turn the mod off

Anonymous

? So I can switch between standard screen and vr? When I try the game keeps forcing steamvr to open and switch displays.

realvr

If you only need to play on screen for a few minutes (e.g., to pass a difficult point in a mission) just press Stop VR on the overlay. If you want to turn the mod off completely, the quickest way is to rename RealVR64.json to some other name, like RealVR64.bak, and to restore the graphics settings from system_ori.xml to system.xml

Anonymous

FYI Had a recurring crash on Polite Society during the chase out of Valentine. Tried a bunch of different things, e.g. switched off DLSS, changed to medium settings from the batch etc. but would still crash regardless. Finally got through the mission by jacking up anti-freeze to Extra.

realvr

It's crazy how different Patrons seem to have the worst freezes in different parts of the game. My current theory is that it might be an uninitialized variable issue in the game code. Impossible to tell for sure without access to the sources though :-(

Anonymous

Is it just me or do other people feel queezy playing this game in VR, I've tried in 1st person and 3rd person, but cannot get past the very first fight at the house :( I really really wanna play this game. :(

Solomon Ginsberg

Have you had a VR headset long? It takes time to build a strong resistance to motion sickness. Most can get past it by taking it slow, short play sessions, and never playing on an empty stomach. Hope this helps.

Anonymous

I'm getting random freezes every 20/30 mins which require me to quit to desktop (audio still plays for a a while before that stops too). Is there any settings I might be missing which might help? I've followed the read-me and blog advice accurately as far as I can tell. I have Anti-Freeze on strong (I guess I could bump this up to Extra). I'm running a Valve Index at 144hz, a 3090 with ryzen 9 5900X and I'm getting about 70-80 fps according to in-game overlay. Also setting resolution to 2700x2700 in overlay. DLSS is on and the game looks great, but the consistent crashing is problematic. Any tips that might reduce the freezes? Thanks in advance for any help.

realvr

Some people noticed improvements by turning on Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (although it might be a placebo effect). Also, assuming that you play with a gamepad, you might try bringing the little SteamVR window to the foreground instead of the game window, as that changes the GPU scheduling priorities and it might be enough to make the situation better

Anonymous

hello luke ross, i have the problem that i can play with your mod with my valve index, but after a while after a few minutes i suddenly fly out of the game and land in the steam window. What could be the problem???

Anonymous

hello luke, my game keep crashing in Valentine(it's ok in the wild) and in some cutscene, i had to run game in normal mode to jump some stories. is there some something i can do to fix this?

realvr

Sure, check out the Antifreeze settings! See https://www.patreon.com/posts/version-1-4-2-54423108 for a detailed explanation of the problem and the possible fix, which seems to work for many people although with varying results

Anonymous

After installing the mod, is there an easy way to toggle it off if you want to switch back to normal/flat play? Thanks!

realvr

Yes, just rename RealVR64.json to RealVR64.bak, and if you want you can also restore your Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\system.xml from the backup system_ori.xml

Anonymous

First I wanna say, great work on all that you've done. This is all amazing the effort you and whoever folks might've helped you. This is all stellar. Alright so... while I think it's because I only got a 1080ti, even at low graphics settings and setting the mod to low in the .bat file, i'm still getting stutter and delay when I turn my head. Is my hardware just SOL or is there additional tuning I can do to help the mod run a lil smoother? Thank you so much for all you do!

realvr

If tracking stutters when you turn your head, you're probably using a WMR headset with SteamVR. Microsoft has a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR that they never seem to get around to fixing, so with WMR headsets like the Reverb G2 you need to use OpenXR. Select the OpenXR renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab in the mod overlay; the mod will save and remember your choice for the next runs.

Anonymous

I followed the instructions on this exactly. When I start the game I get an unknown error FFFFFFF. It just stay on the loading screen forever. Then if I click ok it crashes.

realvr

Did you check out the Troubleshooting post (https://www.patreon.com/posts/troubleshooting-51552016)? What are your system specs?

Anonymous

I did, it wasn't any of those issues. My specs are good as well. But the problem just ended up being a bad install with Rockstars app. Verifying integrity of game files fixed the problem.

Anonymous

Hey everyone, so I'm using a RTX 2080 but I'm getting about 50 FPS on medium, which seems a bit low even compared to others with a RTX 2080 super. I wondered if anyone that is using a RTX 2080 would be willing to share their current settings for the mod :) Furthermore I wondered whether it's normal that everything that is more than let's say 20 meters away becomes pretty blurry (I'm quite new to VR)

Anonymous

Thanks for all your help, I did find out that the shared internet of my student housing was a big part of the problem. I fixed most of the link blur by upping the bitrate in the oculus debug tool to 350mbps, I was unaware of the debug tool first as I've only been an oculus owner for a week or 2 (you're probably shaking your head rn that standard thing to do solved the problem haha). For any other RTX 2080 (not SUPER) user that may read this in the future I'd say the hardware unboxed optimized setup with quality DLSS and a 2430 x 2430 resolution is a good starting point. It gives about 25-30% more frames than 2700x2700 while slightly increasing blur.
