A few Patrons who have streaming utilities installed on their systems (like OBS Studio, Twitch Studio, etc.) found that RDR2 was behaving erratically in VR. We investigated the problem together, and as it turns out, those utilities silently create a D3D11 device inside every game they detect, even if you are not using them at the moment. Talk about intrusive behavior. This is especially bad because Vulkan has a specific mechanism designed for this kind of "helpers", and it certainly does not involve sneaking a DX11 device into the game space. Version 1.4.3 adds a special check that should make the mod tolerate this unexpected snooping.

Some AMD users still had problems with 1.4.2; the game would enter VR but the image would be very blurry. We found out that the bug Rockstar introduced in build 1.0.1436.25, which I explained here (the game "forgets" the Resolution Scale value, resetting it to Off every time it is run) is not limited to NVIDIA cards as I initially thought but it also affects systems with AMD graphics cards. Huge kudos to Patron SkyKing, who worked with me for days until we found a stable solution. Version 1.4.3 should now be able to override the Resolution Scale setting reliably even for AMD cards. If you're Team Red and you're upgrading from a previous release, I recommend deleting your RealVR.ini file before running the new version for the first time.

I also fixed a small defect where the black bars might not be detected and removed correctly in specific moments of some cutscenes.

If everything goes well with these changes, in the upcoming 1.5.0 I will add DLSS as an option to the config presets, to provide an easier starting point for further manual tweaking. I have to say that DLSS is growing on me. I used to find it inferior to the game's native TAA, but now that I'm getting used to it, I'm not so sure anymore. It sure looks sharper, and it does make for a smoother ride. Also, NVIDIA is actively updating it and making it better with each revision, while RDR2's Resolution Scale and TAA will never be touched again (except for breaking them with new bugs, grrr).

As always the download links are below, and your feedback is welcome!

NVIDIA is actively updating DLSS? how do you mean?

realvr

See here for instance: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/dlss-client-library-manual-update The idea is that the DLSS .dll file is meant to be updated separately from the game. Of course in our case we'll have to fight with the Rockstar launcher that "helpfully" restores it to the government-mandated default at every launch :-D

I wish there wasn't the slight stutters when looking around using Virtual Desktop. Other than the stutters it looks and runs sooooo much better for me in VD!!!!

Not sure if it's due to this version or because I deleted the ini file, but before this patch I would get crashes within 10 minutes, now I played 4 hours with 2 crashes in total (the freezefix set to medium). It still sucks when this happens at the end of a mission but at least it's playable again :)

realvr

It might be interesting to verify whether it's the effect of the fix against intrusions. To double-check you could briefly return to version 1.4.2: you only need to overwrite the two files "RealVR_RDR2.asi" and "RealVR64.dll" with the versions from the 1.4.2 zip, as everything else is unchanged. Don't delete "RealVR.ini" and don't modify anything else: just play for a while. If you start getting frequent freezes again we'll finally know where they come from :-D

The dll file worked but I cant say I see any improvents, they may be too subtle to notice.

Just a random question. I am not able to access the configuration overlay. I don't have a "pause" key on my keyboard but even with the on-screen keyboard nothing happens. It also says to press both triggers. Does this means the aim and shot buttons on the gamepad at the same time? Nothing happens either. How do you access it?

Anonymous

You must be in the pause menu for the trigger action to work.

Toshie27

Now it's good and I don't have to readjust the graphics every time, the only thing that is not so nice is that the graphics are no longer as sharp as before? Or rather, it draws streaks when moving

Anonymous

I'm no longer getting crashes, yay!

realvr

Did you delete "RealVR.ini" before running the game after the update?

realvr

That's great! Did you have any streaming programs installed?

Hey, mod works perfect for me and was wondering if anyone has tried to use vr-mod with other mods like for example reshade 3.0? Do they rule each other out or is there a chance to make it work🙂

Anonymous

I do not think they work until Luke enables or integrates it somehow with the VR mod. I do agree that support for e.g. this would be great on top of dlss: https://vrtoolkit.retrolux.de/ I use this Reshade mod for other VR games and it does wonders to PQ.

Can i just confirm with others that they have run both RDR2 and GTAV through a VIVE Pro2 headset? For some reason since i upgraded, both games no longer work properly!

Anonymous

Vive Pro2 works for RDR2 mod at least for me. GTAV I haven’t tried yet with it. Note that I am using beta versions of both Vive Console and SteamVR (both installed and updated via Steam!).

Hi Luke, any chance to get some options to play with 3D depth/separation? Reason why I am asking, is that I was playing around with resolution settings in the evening and decided instead to lessen the world scale way below 1.0 (I had it on 1.15 for some time) and increased my IPD from VR lenses. I was blown away with the strong 3d effect & immersion in RDR2 compared to having scale on @1.0 (or higher) and using my true IPD. It felt great especially in 3rd person, but I was obviously playing with mini-me:s and npc:s, but I could spot tiny details otherwise missed. It felt a bit like 'dejavu' playing Nvidia 3d vision 2 glasses with high seperation & convergence, but this time with total 360 degree view in VR. Simply great. After spending 2 hours playing with it I tried the default settings, which felt simply quite lacklustre and the 3d pop missing. There is no turning back now :) Loving this mod.

realvr

As you found out, in VR 3D separation and world scale are basically the same thing (both depend on the distance D between the left and right cameras). If D equals your IPD, you will have normal separation and 1:1 world scale. If D is increased, you will have stronger separation and smaller (perceived) world scale; if D is lowered, you'll get lower separation and larger world scale, until you get to D = 0 where you have no separation at all (monoscopic) and everything looks like it's at infinite distance from you (so distant objects look normal and closer objects seem huge). There is no convergence or any other parameter to toy with in VR.

Just picked this mod up...Gotta say, you've done a really good job with it! Now I have to work on my VR legs lol I mainly sim race, fly and do some other editing/modelling in VR so you'd think I'd be fine but these games always make me queasy at first. Runs pretty good on Quest 2....I7-10700, 32 GB 3200Mhz and AMD 6800XT. I'll be playin around with it some more...It's really immersive.

realvr

Hi Big D, welcome and thank you for the support! Yes, my mods can be pretty intense... RDR2 is slower paced than GTA V on average, but it has its moments too, like when you're skinning an animal or fleeing after a robbery :-D

Cercata

RDR2 got updated on Steam, the MOD still works despite an ScripHook update warning.

realvr

Thanks for the heads-up! Luckily not every update is a thermonuclear bomb :-D

Anyone else having issues with the latest RDR2 update on steam today (74.4MB)? VR stopped working for me (the game runs in 2D in the headset). I was using 1.4.0 just as fine as of yesterday (playing pretty much daily), will try 1.4.3 now just in case... [edit] even with 1.4.3 it's busted, the game only appears briefly in VR when I go into the settings and then switch TAA on or off, then I apply, then when exiting the settings I can see in the background the game is in VR, but when the menu closes, it goes instantly back to a squared 2D view in the headset.

Derrick taylor

I have no vr screen again with the game screen on the upper left corner box of the screen. I don't know if it was from the update but this just happened recently. I had download and exchanged the 1.42 version from the 1.43 version and still the same. I managed to get it into VR with TAA off and the DLSS on but it is very blurry with that from the graphics settings. With TAA on there is no vr ..just the 2d screen in vr. With TAA off, which is my best graphics setting, it is in 2D. On DSS it is in VR and very blurry.

Solomon Ginsberg

Have you tried, when in the game world, resizing the window in the rdr2 tab of the overlay (keeping whatever resolution is already set)? This works for me.

realvr

Yesterday's unannounced update broke my settings detection code. Hotfix at https://www.patreon.com/posts/54816122

Not sure if this helps anyone else, but i found going into Nvidia Control Panel - Manage 3D settings - and turning on DSR Factors (for me 4.00x) and DSR Smoothness to 5% helped a lot. My game seemed to run a lot smoother and did not crash.

may i ask, what you´re specs are? (mostly gpu and headset) :)
