I apologize for the delay in delivery, but Episode 31 is finally here. This is a beautiful but highly melancholic album. The themes are tough, but the music is sublime. I bring the keyboard with me for this EPL (for the first time). I hope you enjoy!

You picked a heck of a band to start bringing a keyboard to the extended play lounge. ;) Great job Doug. The music is so peaceful and yet disturbing at the same time. Just a total juxtaposition clinic on display.

I haven't listened to this album in years, so this felt like a rediscovery. Nice one Doug!

I got into Opeth with this album, although I always loved heavy music. I had heard a few of their older songs but this album and Ghost Reveries were the ones that got me hooked. All they have done so far is great, whatever style or mood they've been through. Opeth is a great band. Certainly one of my favorites still active. Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Tool are way up there in that category.

Thanks for doing this one, really appreciate it. I used to play the hell out of all the Opeth albums, and I always appreciated how this one still had that "Opeth-ness" with radically different instrumentation, and how Mikael could apply his sensibility so successfully to a different style. You know you've got to do Deliverance now. It's only fair. :)

This was an absolute joy to listen to. What a treat to hear an amazing album with spot-on analysis AND some tasty improv. Cheers!

Sweet. You should check out their "Lamentations" DVD. It's a live show and they play the entire Damnation album in the 1st set then some other, heavier songs on set 2. Also has a documentary on the making of both Damnation and Deliverance.

Thanks for picking this one, I think this is still my favorite Opeth album. Now, if you're interested in more of the moody ambient progressive folk-ish collaborations between Wilson and Åkerfeldt, I strongly recommend the album Storm Corrosion; the first track of the album, Drag Ropes, also has an amazing official video animated by Jess Cope (who also did the videos for Routine and the Raven for Steven Wilson).

I love the moment when the grass kicks in and Doug starts jamming free in "Closure", until he realizes at exactly 33:40 he was deep in the moment! That face though :) :)

Damnation is an excellent album. Although I hate when Opeth purists say that only good no-growl Opeth is Damnation, I like their more recent works even more. I'm reminded of Opeth concert I attended in September. They performed Hope Leaves live from this album. Although I was more into their heavy stuff that night, but studio version is really powerful. But my favourite song isn't constant: one day it's To Rid The Disease, another – In My Time of Need, and in some moments it's Windowpane.

Such a wonderful album… It’s my go to album if I need some soothing music, although the lyrics are far from soothing. The guitar sound on this album is just perfect, especially on Window Pane and Ending Credits! Thank you, Doug, for diving in and taking us on a journey with Opeth.
