Jim Carrey won a Golden Globe, but he wasn’t even considered for an Oscar. Story goes that to this day, the academy absolutely refuses to nominate the man who starred in Ace Ventura. There must have been something in the air back then, because four separate movies from 1997 to 1999 tackled this very same subject matter—protagonists unwittingly trapped in artificial worlds—and they’re all classics. I suppose even naming them would be spoiling their central twist, so I’ll try to play it safe. Of course there’s The Truman Show, but there’s also a David Fincher movie that came out the same year, an Alex Proyas movie in 1998, and a certain action movie that came out in April 1999. Chances are most of them have already been recommended—especially the last one.
