Sony Corp's quarterly financials have finally arrived, and they carry within good news for the PlayStation brand. PS5 is selling briskly, third party games are moving, monthly active users are steady, and so on. But this recent report portends rougher times ahead, too, especially when it comes to PlayStation's vaunted dozen-or-so 'games-as-a-service' that once promised to help shepherd in a new era of Sony exclusive. And all of this against the backdrop of a mysteriously-exiting CEO? With Concord confirmed for 2024, Bungie looking a little bit like a lemon, and a potential Twisted Metal teaser embedded in a recent live-action trailer, the reality is: We have much to discuss. Plus: Grand Theft Auto VI's reveal trailer is coming in December, Sony will be co-funding and co-producing Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda film, BioWare continues to tease Mass Effect for some reason, Embracer's collapse continues unabated, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! PlayStation Portal is right around the corner. What's our excitement level? Nearly a million people have already Platinumed Spider-Man 2. Does this data have significance? PSVR2's coverage is virtually non-existent on Sacred Symbols. Is a lack of media attention partially responsible for the peripheral's soft reception? World War III lurks right around the corner. Which military job would be the best fit for us as individuals when we inevitably get enlisted?

Re:GTA5, I loved GTA4. I bought my PS3 when it came out, and the franchise used to be a favorite. 5 was a little weak to me in comparison, plus, I was not a fan of Trevor at all.

I really enjoyed 5’s story, played through it twice over ps3 and ps4. Trevor is one of my favourite gaming characters, but it’s a stretch to say I state this proudly.

Jim Ryan doubling down on GAAS and somewhat de-emphasizing AAA blockbusters is like diversifying one's Large Cap Growth Stock Market portfolio with random cryptocurrencies. Yes, one of them may hit but it's extremely unlikely. Buffet's #1 (and #2) rule of investing is "Don't lose money." In chasing the live service trend Playstation got greedy and are unlikely to be financially rewarded.

So Chris’s take on The Finals was a weird one because it just makes him an internet reaction vessel. The AI generated announcer is weird thing to be adverse to because it actually works here if you played the game and see how it works. It’s reductive (and funny) to boil it down to Microsoft Sam. Halo has an announcer yes, Chris loves Halo, yes. But he didn’t cite another example of the announcer in an FPS but still called them Iconic. I have a memory of Chris staying he turns down certain things in games that are repetive to avoid getting annoyed with them. So if they got a so called “iconic” announcer odds are some people just mute it anyway. The Finals is made by a lot of ex-Dice battlefield 3and4 devlopers not “the promise of Crackdown 3” the destruction was always part of the battlefield DNA. It’s very clearly a light hearted spiritual successor to Battlefield with classes and specific gear. Lastly as far as the name goes that’s because the game is set up to be a tournament. Matching making puts you into a bracket and narrows as you win. It’s almost like Trials of Osiris in Destiny. Thus the name Can you reach The Finals? End rant.

Gents, so glad you brought up the new Mass Effect teaser- this series had the greatest impact on me as a (very casual) gamer. I got absolutely obliterated in the ME Reddit when I said, basically, "Why would you give 4 years of small teasers in a row? Are we really ever going to get anything?" Is this practice of teasing a game over 5 years seen anywhere else? I can only read this as "We've got nothing, but we've gotta make them think we have something."

Agree with the person that wrote in about Alan Wake’s gameplay. That’s the main thing holding that series down for me.

I hope we get more mortorstorm. That was one of my favourite racers to this day, and back in the ps3 days, blew my mind graphics wise.

Hey CDC, What happens to Rocksteady Studios if/when The Suicide Squad game doesn't do the numbers Arkham Knight, or even Arkham Asylum did? They feel bigger than Crystal Dynamics or whoever the hell made Gotham Knights, but I'm curious if you think this is their last shot before shutting down or going completely away from DC.

There is no way that rockstar release GTA6 on PS4. They have always been about the best gameplay and presentation, particularly since GTA4 onwards. They know that consumers expect the best graphics, sound, gameplay and scope across a huge open world from the GTA/red dead games. This game has to push the envelope - that’s part of the hype they generate and the development time suggests no less. If anything, the console generation it spans will likely be a similar situation as GTA5….if GTA6 releases in two years’ time - five years into the PS5’s life-cycle (and most of the way through a typical console generation) - then they will be priming it for rerelease on PS6 instead. Ready to get that sweet double dip cheddar they love so much.
