Spider-Man 2 Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 345

PlayStation 5's meteoric sales year has largely been missing something very specific: A major AAA first party exclusive. Coincidentally, Sony's prolonged silence literally couldn't have happened during a more premiere year for third parties -- so, bullet potentially dodged -- but still, we've been left wanting in this regard. Finally, Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 has swung in to capture our hearts and minds, and capture them it did. A sequel to 2018's Spider-Man on PS4 and 2020's Miles Morales on PS4 and PS5, Spider-Man 2 holds a heavy burden for an under-fire PlayStation Studios family, and it does so very well. Joining the core cast of Sacred Symbols today to discuss the many finer points of Spider-Man 2's story, gameplay, and more is Gene Park of The Washington Post and Punching Up. Together, we delve deep into a New York City with villainy run completely amok. Thankfully, though, there are now two Spider-Men willing to risk it all to protect what they hold dear.

I have been wondering if they have been developing tech for a motorcycle in Wolverine and wanted to throw in the bicycle sections to “practice” implementing it in a more rudimentary way

Platinum last night, timing is perfect on this one.

Brandon Griffin

That’s exactly what it is. The director even said on IGN or Kinda Funny that they originally planned to have an MJ motorcycle segment but didn’t have the time. I’m sure the bicycles were put in to test the physics a bit, just at a base level design.

Walker Simmons

I think the Lizard chase set piece was the coolest part of the game for me

Gray Gordon

Gummy Chris is 👍

The best review I can give of this game is that it's my first ever platinum - and I've been a Sony guy since the PS2. In normally like how Dustin described, in terms of not being bothered to clean up trophies and do extra things after I've beat the story in a game - but I found the gameplay so fun in this, that it was no problem at all to keep playing and do everything. Also loved how the open world activities were more organic and not quite as check-listy as the previous games, and the side stuff had really good payoffs.

Though I may disagree with some of your points. I do agree on how Miles story could have been better. Not focusing on ideals Insomniac is trying to beat us over the head with, or how funk was the genesis of hip hop and rap! Also the gay couple quest was lame. I feel this discussion didn’t do the game justice, and could skew people’s opinions into think it is way worse of a game than it really is. I don’t think you guys intended on this conversation being overly negative, but it definitely came across that way. Just thinking out loud, I could see how recording and conveying your thoughts in a podcast form could be very difficult as well. Also being in a certain head space can affect how you look at games too. In a long rambling way I guess I’m asking have you guys gone back, and seen content you have made intending it to be one thing, only to regret it because of the overall tone or vibe it put off? Sorry for the grammatical errors if there are any. Thanks for all the content boys!

Such a great episode and one of the reasons I decided to join the patreon after a couple of months listening to the pod. Can’t really say I really agreed with too much you guys said but that’s why I like this show so much. MJ op missions were amazing imo, and I honestly think making her so op was the reason the missions felt way better in the second game. I hope they go crazy and she gets even more op in the 3rd game lmao.

I legit ended up hating this game. MJ missions were a rare highlight for me. The ge looks great but the story and dialogue were absolutely horrible, I just wanted it to be over by the end. I really hate Insomniacs version ok NY, it's not cool at all lol it sucks.

Maybe Dagan was busy but it's disappointing Dustin was chosen for this over him. Dagan just reviewed the previous 2 Spiderman games with Colin on Knockback. Meanwhile Dustin admittedly doesn't enjoy open world games and skipped the side quests. Help me make sense of this.

Keslen

Dustin should not of been on this podcast. Not sure why they picked him.

The guys unsure of what insomniac could do for the third game—I personally could see them doing Superior Spider-Man with the return of Dock-Ock, and then potentially the merge of Green Goblin and Carnage to create Red Goblin. Just thought it would be interesting.

Joseph La Russa

Great episode! Any chance we could get a second one with Dagan on it? Maybe with Hoeg, who wasn't so hot on the game, and Jaffe? Just a thought!
