Sea of Stars Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 336

A little more than a month ago, Quebecois developer Sabotage released J-inspired-RPG Sea of Stars to great critical acclaim and commercial success, following a rousing Kickstarter campaign that itself launched during the earliest days of the pandemic. Available across a gamut of platforms and subscription services, Sabotage is willing to spread the field with this release with good reason: Sea of Stars takes a niche genre and both positively alters its mechanics while making it more accessible than your average category peer. The result is a 25-to-30 hour (or more) adventure with a surprisingly dynamic set of gameplay systems overlaid upon an admittedly standard (if not at times slow) story. What will perhaps catch your eye first, though, is how beautiful it is. To discuss this game in detail, I (Colin) grabbed Punching Up co-host and Last Stand's coordinator, Micah Watson, who beat it on Switch just a day before I completed it on PS5. We hope you enjoy our chat as much as we enjoyed talking.

I finally popped the Platinum on Sea of Stars a few days ago. I really love this game.

Great spoiler cast, loved how you guys formatted it. The way the pc played, combat system, groups used and the synopsis. I really enjoyed it and the focus to stay on the topics

An instant JRPG classic! So happy to finally be in on a LSM spoilercast with something I played and love

Garl’s death was unexpected and my fiancée who was sitting by watching, cried when he died. This is the first video game she has ever cried to

Good review, but it really stinks you didn’t get the true ending. Honestly I don’t even call the first ending a true ending, it is more like an alternate timeline that you need to see in order to understand what was at stake when you get the true ending. It is maybe 5-8 hours more work but I thought it was 100% worth it.

I've had a game breaking bug for a month. Right at the fleshmancers castle, sucks.

Same thoughts, feels like this isn’t a complete review without them getting the true ending and actually finishing the story. Those were the most satisfying and integral parts of the game for me, so to see Colin elected to skip it entirely is disappointing.

B'st is pronounced "Beast."

Glad to see Colin reference Reddit’s negativity on the game, made me feel less insane for loving this game.
