Hey Dukes, Do we need two extra buttons on modern controllers? They could be called BLACK and WHITE on Xbox. I know there are some controllers with back buttons, but those do not function as extra buttons. They only allow you to remap an existing button to it (like A to jump). With more and more PC-centric titles coming to console, like Age of Empires and Baldur's Gate, a couple extra buttons will make porting so much easier for developers. Starfield could have a "swap to previous weapon" or "use med/trauma/emergency pack" button. Perhaps the solution is a touchpad? Ghost of Tsushima uses a touchpad as five extra buttons to (1) activate focused hearing, (2) sheath or draw your sword, (3) play the flute, (4) use guiding wind, and (5) bow. The issue with touchpads though is that they are less reliable for performing important actions during difficult gameplay sections. Imagine having to use a touchpad to throw a grenade in Doom Eternal.

Good day Dukes, Last week Cog mentioned if he had to choose between podcasting and interviewing dev teams, he would follow his true passion and interview developers. That got me curious, over the years, what's a favorite piece of content you've created that you’re most proud of? Thanks as always and wanted to send my appreciation for the news and entertainment you both provide each and every week!

Howdy dukes Over the past few weeks I’ve been hearing two major opinions on starfield, one being that it’s a “breath of fresh air for the company since the doldrums of fallout 76”and the “Bethesda never changes and starfield is the same game as the last 3 Bethesda releases hiding behind the illusion of size” as seen in the Jimquisition review, I know you both have your complaints about the game in particular matty with the exploration But where do you find your selves in this debate? Is Bethesda heading in the right direction or are they forever stuck in the past? 4/10 review If you’re the kind of person who thinks videogames peaked with Fallout 3's launch version and they’ve required neither evolution nor improvement since, this game is absolutely for you. If you believe Bethesda doesn’t need to exhibit growth as an artistic outlet and hasn’t had to change a thing about the way it’s made games since 2008, I can safely say you’ll adore Starfield because it’s all that a Bethesda game has always been... and literally nothing more...Starfield is a shallow ocean, hiding its lack of creative ambition behind the physical size of a universe that’s minuscule where it counts...In short, it's everything a fan of these games could love.

Greetings Dukes, Recently, I've seen a lot of excitement and surprise for a recent update to a game from 2020. The independent European team behind it has spent years working to deliver on the promise of the popular TTRPG on which the game is based. Of course, I'm talking about Cyberpunk 2077. Or wait, was that Baldur's Gate 3? My question is what does it mean for a game to "release" in today's age of updates, patches, and years-long support?  And further, how does that affect its reception? Why does a two-word modifier like "early access" completely change the context of two games' releases -- where one is universally acclaimed and a heavy-favorite for GotY and the other a great comeback story of a once-disappointment? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks, and have a "Can 2023 please calm down; how am I supposed to play all these great games?" kind of day.

Duke Dudes, I loved the conversation about being too good at a certain game and inventing rules for yourself. My brother and I are too good at Power Stone 2 on Dreamcast. So every time we play, both of us have to choose Random Character Select. We have to have both CPUs be on a team. AND my brother and I cannot use a weapon until a CPU has picked it up first. It keeps the game fresh and fun for the two of us, because otherwise we would just pick the same thing over and over and be locked in this eternal struggle over who is better. So we leave it to chance and strategy! Have a "every time I read the letters PS2, my brain has to decipher between Power Stone 2 or PlayStation 2" kind of day.

This one's for Matty! I'm a career video editor for a marketing company, but this year I decided to tackle YouTube as a professional venture (I used to do YouTube professionally in college, which is how I scored my current job.) However, the landscape is different and I feel like I'm out of the loop. I'll upload a video and it'll bring in 36,000 views, which is great for a channel with less than 1,000 subscribers, but then I'll upload another video and it doesn't even break 700 views. The environment feels so much more feast-or-famine than it was between 2017-2020 when I was doing it originally. What am I missing? Any wisdom you can provide in order to help me get a more consistent performance? Thanks!

Hey Dukes, Apologies for the length of this write in, but it centers around handheld gaming. I think Xbox should make a handheld for one main reason - hopefully, they can produce something that simply works. I hate to do this to Cog’s baby, but I recently bought a ROG Ally and bottom line, the device didn’t function properly in regard to performance and I experienced constant crashing without even being in a game. Yes, this is anecdotal, but the situation further developed to the point where, when I decided it was time for a return, I literally could not get the Ally to factory reset despite following exact instructions. Fortunately, Best Buy has my back and can get this wiped and process my return, but it left me thinking… surely Microsoft and their history in the hardware market (Surface for example) could produce a high-quality native device that functions on a consistent level. With all the problems people have experienced with handhelds like the Ally and even some complaints with the Steam Deck, do we really think Xbox should avoid this market, or is there an opportunity here? Thanks for the great show!

Hey Matty and Cog. I don't normally do podcasts but always listen to yours whilst I'm at work and makes the day go much quicker. You 2 bounce off each other perfectly and my work mates must think I'm crazy when I'm trying to hold a laugh in. Like when cog commented "no more free lunch" when Microsoft stopped the gamepass month for £1. I know Fable isn't here till next year but I'm wondering if you 2 are looking forward to it? It's a game that I cannot wait to see and I really hope it's a reboot we all deserve. Wish you an awesome day and stay healthy

Hey MrMateoPlays and Solomon Cog, I have a suggestion for a new segment- a starfield mod roundup. Considering the importance of modding to BGS titles, I think this would be a good way to highlight some choice mods that will sustain the starfield playerbase until Hammerfell. It could be weekly, biweekly, or even monthly depending on the rate of new mods being released.

Dooks! Is it safe to say we're in the presence of the new Big 3 of RPGs? Baldurs Gate 3, Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 all seem to be at the top of their fields, each taking a unique take on the open world RPG formula. Is there room for a fourth to break through and hit the same cachet and prestige? Is that next title going to be Avowed, or is it clockwork revolution? fable? Find out on the next episode of Dragon ball Z

Hey Dooks! Phil did an interview on at TGS and commented on star fields future and said they wanted to maintain engagement with the game over the long term and encourage continued subscriptions. How do you guys think this will impact Starfield will there be yearly expansions? or will it be like minecrafts marketplace mixed with creation club? Sources will be below https://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/interview/1533808.html “We believe that it is essential to continue updating Starfield's content in order to maintain engagement with the game over the long term and encourage continued subscriptions. That's exactly what Todd Howard and his team are doing right now.”

Is there any chance that someday you'd get a guest or co-host who's knowledgeable on hardware-level analysis? I love the Moore's Law episodes of Sacred+, and would enjoy listening to someone with firsthand experience, and who would know whether or not the Series S can handle certain tasks. Thanks!

Hello there dukes. It is I, the mailman. I’m here to ask for some advice on a problem I’ve been having. I’m diehard physical media and just love having the case and being able to look at it and hold it and etc. Should I just accept the future and start buying digital instead. It seems with how the future looks and the leaks that this is how it’s going to be anyway. I don’t want to be screwed in the future and not be able to play my physical copy of EA skate 3 on the next Xbox. Please give me your wisdom duke men. P.s. for Cog. Lord Beefy would be a great username on onlyfans………just sayin Thanks, Nick the mailman

Hey Dukes, I was thrilled to learn that Octopath Traveler II now has a release date for Xbox. Having already enjoyed it on Steam and PlayStation, I'm more than willing to dive into it once again on the Xbox. Moreover, Xbox's strong presence at TGS has fueled my optimism about the platform's future regarding Japanese games. Could this signify the start of a new era, a Japanese gaming renaissance on the console? PS: We need a Lost Odyssey 2 Best, Sean M.

Hello Dukes, With Starfield now getting review bombed on Steam by people buying it, reviewing it, then refunding it minutes later, Starfield now has a Steam user score lower than Fallout 76. I can’t help but wonder: Would Deathloop get a Metacritic score of 88, 4 points higher than Starfield, and receive multiple 10s from major outlets like IGN and Gamespot, if it released on Xbox before PlayStation? Is the bias against Xbox real? I agree with Matty that journalists naturally have less knowledge about Xbox since PlayStation is mostly their preferred platform, but there has been an absurd amount of unequal coverage, clearly in PlayStation’s favor. Part of me thinks that I should follow King’s advice and not listen to others telling me how my food tastes, but when coverage is this unequal, and the hate for Xbox is palpable, its hard to ignore the hate and bias online. Eager to hear what the Dukes think! Hope you guys have a “I put 100 hours into Starfield, and I haven’t even started Cyberpunk or Baldur’s Gate 3” kind of day.

Gents, I wanna hear Cog pontificate about Phantom Liberty. That’s all. Love the show, I’ll shut up and listen. <3

Sup Dukes, Possible correction for Cog from last DDU. The new Xbox seemingly based on ARM I believe isn't simply because of mobile, but may be a contributing factor. Apple launched their ARM based chips a few years ago for their desktops/laptops with one of the main features being great performance with less power consumption. Their chips also have memory built in with GPU having direct access to memory thus cutting out the need to receive data from the CPU. I'm vey curious as to what Microsoft/Xbox plan to do with ARM and if they plan to follow a similar pattern or not. "I hope I didn't make a complete fool of myself with this comment" kind of day.

Hey dukies I know I’m a bit late but Dam that leaked Xbox controller looking like a white girl with leggings. Don’t have too much to say other then why are there so many great games this year. Have fantastic day dukes.

Good afternoon boys, In honor of Halo 3 turning 16 years old this week, I feel it’s time to start drumming up the desire for a Halo 3 Anniversary in 2027. Since game development takes exponentially longer than it did in the mid 2000’s, I feel starting this petitioning now will at least give Microsoft some time to fund the game and have it ready for a 2027 launch. That’s all I got, thanks and have a “I want to finish the fight all over again at 31 years old” kind of day.

Hello Dukes, I have some thoughts on the whole mid-gen refresh. It seems Xbox leadership is OK with having the weaker console for the second half of the generation. And I agree. I feel that gamers often get to caught up in counting pixels, and measuring shadows. Although it’s not the same, Nintendo has no problem being the lowest strength console-by a lot. While I’m not saying we should allow that big of a gap; is it wrong to see Xbox leadership focused on creating the best game possible with what they have. Am I out of line? Or is there something to be said about the approach. Take care gentlemen, and have a “Marty’s game just got review bombed” kind of day.

Tacoyaki

Howdy there Dukes of Hazard, What are your thoughts on gatekeeping in video games? Is it considered gatekeeping by being vocal about not letting others play old or retro games because “they weren’t there for it” or “games of that generation belong only to them” kind of mindset? Do we need more gatekeeping in video games? Or are we going too far? Love to know your thoughts. Have a “my room mate took my lunch before I left work” kind of day

To the Dukes: There has been a lot of discourse recently regarding Gamepass profitability and sustainability, especially so now after it was revealed how much it would be for some of these games to launch within the service day and date. My question : With the ABK deal seemingly confirmed, the massive release of Starfield and the future roadmap of Bethesda / XGS games set, do you think Xbox’s Gamepass sustainability concerns behind them? Xbox will no longer need to pay for many of these huge AAA 3rd party games when they’ll have a steady slate from 1st party every quarter. Thanks guys have a : “(insert Lord Cog’s Starfield music impression here) kinda day”

Hello Dukes, Is the new Perfect Dark game dead? I love the XBLA version of PD (we don't talk about PD: Zero) but I cannot help but feel that everything is stacked against this game. It's an old IP with not much relevance today, only three games in the series, none recent. The Initiative seems to be unorganized, Crystal Dynamics is having layoffs and we haven't seen anything besides a CG teaser. Perfect Dark is still charming today for me and I love it but most folks want Call of Duty, Halo, Borderlands or Fortnite. I can't see how Perfect Dark can still be what it was and be something new and relevant at the same time. What say you? Do I not have enough faith or we destined for disappointment? Have a "I bit into a chicken sandwich and chewed that gross piece of rubbery chicken" kind of day.

My Dukes! Do we think Xbox will reach their supposed 120 million target in 2030 for game pass subscribers? Curious to hear in general your take on what growth is going to look like in the years to come for gamepass. Cheers

Anthony A.

Hey Dukes! Starfied is my GOTY. It is the game I can’t stop thinking about. It’s the game I can’t stop playing. Is it a perfect game? No. But it’s a damn great one . With the exception of some minor gameplay changes, it’s a Bethesda RPG through-and-through. With that being said, is that the crux of the issue that people have with the game? In my opinion, it really is the same style of RPG they have been developing since Oblivion. Does Bethesda need to drastically overhaul their gameplay style and design for their next game? Also, Starfield had to follow Baldur’s Gate 3. A game that will probably be many people’s GOTY. A game that showed many that an CRPG can be old school, complicated, deep and be a gorgeous looking game as well. Is Starfield behind the 8-ball because of BG3? Would we see more 9’s and 10’s if it came out first? Keep up the great content. Also, please either have Ray Gun or Jaffe on the Starfield spoilercast. Anthony A.

What up Prosecutor Matty and Defense Attorney Cog, Matty you knew I wasn't going to let this slide... I'm just gonna get right into it. The Game Pass pick of the week is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy. The Father of Danganronpa and still the reigning champ of the mystery visual novel genre! After Matty has repeatedly disrespected this masterpiece of a franchise, I had to present my case to the jury. You want Danganronpa's great writing, characters and mystery without the focus on kids, pink blood and weird QTE gimmicks? Well this is the game for you! Not only that, but the soundtrack and the "Objection!" call outs are iconic! When the case gets heated, it sounds like you're playing a 16-bit era Capcom fighter. It's absolutely amazing. I implore everyone to forsake Danganronpa, The False Prophet and play The One True King instead! Have a great day Dukes!

Hey dukes! On the latest episode of the XNC podcast with colteastwood and MAGG, Colt mentions he has a friend who has insight on the next Tomb Raider. They divulged some information about the game which according to Colt, they said “ Lara is a lesbian who is now dealing with a relationship in the new game. She is dealing with a crisis of conscious for all the artifacts she has stolen. She is returning artifacts back to their rightful place instead of collecting them.” Now I shortened what Colt revealed and you can hear the full detail on his podcast but from what he shared, this kinda doesn’t sound like a tomb raider game. But I wanted to know what you guys thought? Love the show and I hope you have a “trying to play trials of Osiris while Bungie servers are fried” kind of day

Robert Olbert

Hi guys, as I have been playing startfield an achievement popped up for leveling up to level 25. To my surprise, only 15% made it that “far”. This basically means that 8.5 million people out of those celebrated 10 million, did not make it even to that point in the game, where IGN gave it a 7/10. Which was, according to some, too early to experience enough to appreciate Starfield. How high do you think these quitters rate Starfield? Thanks for your work which keeps me entertained on my daily paced walks. Robert

Sup dukies, I Just wanted to give y’all a shoutout on a great podcast. I’m a pc guy and I enjoy your take on the industry as a whole. I do have a question on why pc is getting hated on by devs and console players as of late. General cobra Colin has also said console is the best place to play games. Would love to hear the dukes maybe voice their opinions on pc and pc gaming since Xbox is really connected to the pc community. Also why are the devs send us suboptimal ports mainly from PlayStation? Have a, can’t get a Titian fall 3 but apex legends is a superior game kind of day.

My Dukes, I have to shout out Lies of P. It's amazing. It has to be the best Soulslike I've played. They've really got that crunchy From Software combat down, great levelling mechanics and a cool Bloodborne like dark world. Don't sleep on this one Souls fans! I hope you two had a chance to check it out this week! And with it being day one gamepass there's no reason not to give it a go! Thanks as always boys, and have a 'I got distracted and now I'll never finish Starfield' kinda day!

What up family, My question is in regard to Xbox player numbers. Last week we heard about Starfield hitting 10 million players which is a great accomplishment but how are those numbers counted? I personally dropped the game after about 4 hours. For me it was just a tad bit too slow and I opted in for Cyberpunk 2.0 with intentions of coming back to Starfield maybe during the holidays when I can get some time off from work. Do my 4 hours count towards the 10 million players? What about those with less time than that? Does it even matter? I would love if Xbox just gave us sales numbers in addition to player count, especially since Starfield likely sold a few million just on PC. Just curious to get the Dukes’ take on this. Stay safe, stay healthy and enjoy the remainder of your week.

Mr. Digital and Mr. Retro, FF7 Rebirth launched preorders in the US with different retailers carrying different incentives including a controller skin, a hat, and a steelbook. I’m curious as people who get review codes, what preorder bonuses make waves on you? Or do you tend to skip them entirely? Thanks and have a “If Matty wasn’t so tall, would Cog give him a noogie?” kind of day.

Hey Dukes, Is Phil oblivious for saying publishers are milking their successful IP putting them in a precarious spot moving forward in the subscription world? The irony is Xbox is the main driver of the subscription future but yet put little effort to create new IP. Halo has been milked for 15 years past its prime. Gears, while great will be on its 6th consecutive entry. Fable, Perfect Dark, Age of Empires, etc... also let's not be naive and think they paid billions for Zenimax and Activision in order to create all new IP. Obviously they have created some new IP over the years but do you think it's been enough and what do you make of Phil's comments, am I reading it wrong? Have a "was it worth the leaks" kind of day

gothichellokitty

Sup Dookers, Why do we praise games for their lack of hand-holding such as Elden Ring, but punish others for their lack of hand-holding such as Starfield? I heard ya'll say that Starfield's onboarding is bad, but they have a whole ass help section in the pause menu to answer any questions you may have. And since when did having to ask others for help feed into the zeitgeist in a negative way? I understand that Bethesda could have given us a little more , like closed the universe off until we arrived at New Atlantis to guide players better, but all-in-all the conversation surrounding Starfield seems a bit muddied with the double standard. Thanks for all that ya'll do, keep up the hard work, but don't forget to rest hard as well.

Hey guys Does your opinion on Microsoft or Xbox change since the FTC leak? I find Mr Spencer's monopolistic attitude towards the gaming market troubling. Also it seems like the heads of Microsoft don't care about the Xbox brand

Hello Dukes, With the new Frontiers update going live on Thursday are either of you giving the game another go? I know you were excited about the new characters specifically Matty. Have a ‘can’t believe ILP ran for only 3 hours’ kind of day.

What up boys! With the recent announcement of Jim Ryan stepping down, what impact do you think his departure will have on the future direction and strategy of PlayStation, and who do you believe could be a potential successor to lead the brand into the future? I'm hoping that whoever takes over takes PlayStation to the next level, doubling down on their existing IP's, creating new ones, and finding creative ways to make more money that doesn't compromise it's customer base. Colin, how do we get you as CEO? What's the first thing you would do as CEO? Thanks for all the great content boys!

I don't think this thread is accepting questions anymore; maybe you meant to use the Sacred Symbols one?
