Second Screen Experiments | Sacred Symbols, Episode 269

The long-awaited Project Q is officially called PlayStation Portal, and the reaction to it has been surprisingly divisive. Priced at $200 and intended purely as a remote play option for PS5, some potential players see obvious use cases while others think this entire initiative is a waste of time and money. Here on Sacred, we have three different opinions to present you with about the future of Portal, and why it might be a mightier machine than some think. Plus: Sony announces new high-end audio devices for PlayStation while gobbling up a boutique headphone company, release dates have been revealed for games like Granblue Fantasy: Relink and Persona 3, BioWare lays off 50 employees, Geoff Keighley finds himself under siege on-stage at Gamescom, and more news followed -- as always -- by listener inquiries. Has game writing hit an all-time low? Which game world (if any) would we like to visit? Will we ever escape the era of the sequel? Is Colin a secret glizzy gobbler? Had to really scroll down to find a single bad comment about Colin with zero likes on the Xbox 2 + 1 video. Definitely agree that the discussion was great. I think everyone had good points and counterpoints.

Your Boi Nicky V

That query about Xbox Two is such a misrepresentation. The YouTube comments are overwhelming positive, same for the Patreon.

I actually really appreciate the price point of Super Perils of Baking. It's such a cool collectable for an incredible price. No rush in getting the game out to me. It's not like there's a shortage of games to play.

Dustin, the Jedi Knight games have been available on PS4 for a while now.

As a Bungie fan, wouldn’t Chris be more engaged with the Destiny news? He didn’t even realize the write in mistake, the “campaign is linear” isn’t a new thing, what was mentioned in the Showcase (which is the topic at hand) was the fact the Destination, location of the expansion itself is the first linear location, it doesn’t circle around and connect to itself in multiple ways like previous destinations. One of the reasons I love Scared Symbols is the analysis and breakdown of news, so it’s unfortunate that when topics I’d expect more from are just glazed over, so much so some of stuff being talked about is the wrong interpretation of the news. Does anyone relate to this in any way? Apologies if this was a bit much, just expressing my feedback and thought, still a lovely podcast, Thank you for the entertainment.

Seeing those sunglasses on Matty I could think of was COG busting out in blu blockers rap 😂

TheChosenOne

Matty bit was hilarious

When you guys were mentioning glizzy, my brain automatically went to firearms haha. TIL glizzy is also a term for hotdogs.

Sumojoe118

Colin make sure to play the dlc for Alan Wake as well. It's not made obvious but it unlocks after beating the main game.

I love how in gaming, the definition of a fanboy has taken on such a negative connotation. When in reality it applies to most of us who are this level of interested in the gaming space we’re willing to subscribe to a patreon to hear about it. The definition of fanboy from Oxford languages, “ noun - a male fan, especially one who is obsessive about comics, music, movies, or science fiction. verb - (of a male fan) behave in an obsessive or overexcited way.”. We’re all fanboys more than we care to admit. Colin’s level of focus on ONLY PlayStation is fanboyish. It doesn’t have to be negative unless you use the term that way. I’m a gaming and sports fanboy. It’s ok people to admit lol if I called Michael Jordan a fanboy for how obsessive/ a fan he is about basketball. It wouldn’t be a negative take at least imo.

The hardware I've always wanted with none of the functionality... Disappointing

Audeze is pronounced like Odessy. I have the Maxwells for PS5 and they are in another league. Worth a try if you have the money🤌

The price point of the Portal is totally fine imo. 150 would have been great, more than 200 would have been taking the piss - but 200 is just fine imo. It has all the dualsense features along with a big screen for this kind of device. Expecting this to be close to 100 is crazy imo. It's not really something I need or will get, but I know alot of people who this would fit great for their lifestyle and is a great companion to their PS5. I'm not sure it'll sell loads but it's just another accessory item for Playstation's stable. I guess I don't get those people who are complaining about it so much - it's clearly not for you, so just don't get it and move on.

The playstation portal is exactly what I want, a gaming device then when my missus wants the TV I just play on the portal, also, it's perfect for the MGS and FF pixel remaster games and others like them

It just gets kind of awkward, when the missus can't use the PS5, while you're utilizing remote play.

Raul Hernandez

So interesting though, I want to support but I have no intent to play Super Perils of Baking, is that Nick?

Luke Silletta

Halo 2 was such a huge game that my dad bought it for me randomly. He was like I don't know what this is but apparently everyone should get it. It was crazy.

Hey Dustin! If you see this message, I’m in Japan rn doing the same itinerary you’re doing. FYI, they are out of Suica cards but you still can get a “welcome suica” valid for 60 days I think. I’m using one and it is the same process

I really need a segment where Colin talks about his journey from being "Beardless Glasses Colin" to becoming "Bearded No-Glasses chad Colin". Perhaps a constellation topic about style?

Anonymous

Dustin, are you going to TGS?

Tony Rivera

OMG the zoom on Matty's glasses - LMAOO

Gregatron

Just an fyi, Audeze is pronounced Audi-zee

Gafferman

Concerning the last 500 copies of Perils of Baking, have you considered selling them in two batches - one batch at the evening US time, and one batch at the evening EU time? Seems like a better way of ensuring that more people from around the world can get in on the release :)

Chicken adobo

As a resident audio enthusiast in the community I would like to make the correction that Audeze is pronounced Au-di -zee just like the word Odyssey with a weird spelling. I just would like to correct this early as we could potentially see a lot more from them. This is a very exciting to see this acquisition as Audeze has some really cool tech that could improve that audio devision at Sony. Hopefully they are able to bring stuff like audeze's head tracking technology to improve vr experiences and audeze's incredible planar drivers to a more attainable price point with Sony's mass manufacturing. They also have some of my favorite wireless gaming headsets with the audeze Maxwell, Penrose, and the ridiculous audeze GX. Audeze is a brand much loved my the audiophile community they sport incredible sounding headphones for gaming ( if you guys get the chance to try them the LCD 2C, LCD 5, and even the CBRN are ridiculous but really cool experiencea for gaming) and I'm really excited to see their future with Sony.

Born-Blind

I'm beyond excited for Dark Forces. I was renting that game over and over from Blockbuster before getting my own PS1 and personal copy later on

Blue

FYI Audeze is pronounced Aw-de-zay.

Hey Colin, heard you praising the sound design in Alan Wake 2 for how creepy it is. You should play for a while with subtitles on if you aren't already. The things that the enemies shout out right before combat is sometimes so hilarious it kills all the tension for the upcoming fight.

Considering Sony is porting all their games to Linux, it is kind of silly to act like Sony could not make a marketable handheld with little effort. They are low key the biggest publisher of Steam Deck verified titles and considering every indie game supports Steam Deck and /or Switch. It is not crazy for Sony to make a successful product if they did not shoot themselves in the foot, like they somehow always manage to do. These games have got to be really easy to port, considering all these indies are publishing on PC, Steam deck, Switch, Xbox, and PS4. Maybe Sony should utilize and market indie publishers again and there would be no better way to do that with a handheld. Xbox literally requires all devs to publish on two different consoles, no reason Sony could not have 2 consoles and just stay away from parity or even requirements to publish on both consoles. After saying all this, I think everyone is underestimating the next Switch. It is a huge threat if the trend of cross Gen releases continues.
