Modern Lawfare | Sacred Symbols, Episode 264

It looks like we can finally -- finally! -- stop talking about Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, at least on this podcast. That's because PlayStation settled on what it frankly could have always had, namely a 10 year deal for access to Call of Duty that runs into the mid-2030s, keeping the cash-cow franchise on Sony hardware for a long time to come. Is this an ideal situation for Sony? Certainly not. But that's their problem, not ours, and at least we can flip the page to make way for more interesting topics! Other news this week includes an interesting, years-late update to Dreams that could have at one time saved it from inevitable failure, drama surrounding the PC launch of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, release dates for Firewall Ultra and Goodbye Volcano High, and -- perhaps most importantly -- PlayStation 5's meteoric sales, as it continues to move at an extremely brisk pace around the globe. Listener inquiries wrap the show up, per usual, touching on topics like Baldur's Gate III, the potential return of Einhander, the PlayStation-centric censorship of indie title LISA, and thoughts on whether Colin compliments Dustin enough, which apparently he doesn't. I think this my favorite thumbnail you’ve ever done. I’m loving the Jim Ryan

Nathan R

These pictures kill me.

The topic of getting a game show together got me thinking about a Sacred Fantasy Football league, as I know Colin is a serious player. I'd love to be involved if that ever becomes a thing! Regular seasonal redraft format, or dynasty format would be so cool. Just a thought.

Im sure ratchet will boot and run with an HDD, but i can bet anytime something is streamed in the game will freeze and load (and thats going to be often considering all the portals and faster gameplay). Maybe to some people thats "playable with an HDD" But i bet most people will be like "wow this sucks, im getting an SSD"

I’m like a serial killer when it comes to Dot’s Pretzels. I kill bags of the southwest version, even though the regular Dot’s or pretzels in general are great

Meatball

Just ordered a new shirt - big fan of the more subtle designs. Plus, as the great Jim Gaffigan says wearing black is easier than working out

Matthew Jones

Dustin was not pleased haha

There has definitely been solid support for the psvr2 when it comes to games. Walkabout Golf has been getting new coarsest, Red Matter 2, Hubris, Synapse. More to come as well.

Hope Dustin is doing ok

Colin, The segment with Dustin being sensitive struck me as a toe over the line. I agree with you that you don’t mean real harm, but there was some clumsiness to the joke which is bound to happen so no big deal. However, defending yourself with “it’s just a joke, don’t make it so serious” felt closer to bullying than I think I’ve heard you before, and that’s my concern. Maybe I’m taking it too seriously, too, and I know Dustin doesn’t need my backup, but I want to speak my sympathy for our round-faced boy.

Johannes

It was probably nothing at all but that "that's what bothers me about your sensitivities (plural)" felt like as if there was a tiny bit he has always thought but never really said. xD

Josh

Colin you sounded like an absolute douche in that segment with Dustin. It wasn’t his reaction man, it was you.

Tyler Scott

Colin, i guess you're not allowed to talk shit and joke with your friends anymore...so no more of that please. I hope Dustin can regain a piece of his mental health soon from that devastating blow you delivered 🙏

There are no enamel pin makers in the US afaik because the process is so intensive for the $1.30 per pin that they're charging. If you ever find someone saying they're made in the US, they're a middleman working with a Chinese factory. I'm sure there are some smaller bespoke brands that do diecut metal pins, but every color on an enamel pin is filled in by hand, then baked.

Joshua Brown

Chris looking like that dude that dies half way through the movie in that thumbnail.

Best thumbnail so far xD

Cat Daddy

The thumbnail is top notch lol

Walker Simmons

I hope sleepy Dustin gets some rest for next episode

Ratchet and Clank is able to run on a mechanical hard drive if you use the absolute minimum specs due to DirectStorage 1.2, which did not exist at the time of ratchet and clanks ps5 release. Though I do think Sony over hyped the ssd in the ps5 at release, they technically weren’t lying about it not being able to run without an ssd at the time. It’s new tech that retroactively makes their old marketing false.

Colton McKinney

Under 4 hours is absolutely unacceptable, boys. I expect a 5 hour episode next week.

Tyler Kaminski

Much love Dustin, you do amazing work for the community, you’re an excellent host of punching up and SS+ sometimes, and an awesome addition to the show in general. We appreciate you!

Those huge bossfights in FF16 are exactly the thing i was missing in new god of war games .

Marc Cairney

Hey guys, as a UK member regarding your merch that I want to buy. When you ship to the UK and if you prefix it’s a gift on customs we can forgo the hefty tax for a simple T-shirt. Would this be an option for you guys when sending to us colonialists?

Jonathan Turner

Next time Dustin sees everyone in person, hes going to pull up like Birdman did on the Breakfast Club some years back.

Germanos

To understand why Ratchet and Clank will be playable without the SSD, please check out the DF news podcast where they discuss the PC-dorks requirements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO9vtfii_2M&t=48s

Something was off about this episode. It ended while I was working and was surprised by it, as normally, I would be focusing on the content more often. I think the energy dropped after the sleep talk. Dunno.

Colin's passion for the humble Pretzel is inspiring.

Hey, just on the topic of Video Game shops in UK and Ireland. I’m from Ireland and Tesco would be our largest and most common shopping centre here, but the only games they really stocked were fifa, COD and a couple of lego titles, up until about three years ago my local Tesco still had some PS2 and PS3 titles on display and the prices were static and never changed. In terms of places to shop for games in Ireland, GameStop has left Ireland as has Argos in the past number of weeks (my two main sources) and CEX (a second hand tech / games shop) and Smyths are pretty much Ireland’s only source of actually buying physical games that i’m aware of now, I personally had to stop collecting physical games because there is pretty much nothing around me anymore without driving a distance. I hear Colin always talking about the digital market but and it’s pretty irritating hearing it because but my internet speed is 36mbps during the day and can plummet to 2/3mbps at night time, downloading Final Fantasy XVI took three days for example. Internet development is miles behind in Ireland unless you live in a town / city which is why I was always so against the digital market, but now I have to basically accept it because of lack of choice😅

Microsoft quite literally brought Starfield to more players by preventing another Sony exclusivity deal. Sony exclusivity means; PS5 only. Microsoft exclusivity means; Xbox, PC and cloud /GamePass.

Colin seemed super anxious this episode.

Jazz Hynkel

fuck, the utter breakdown at 1:39:00 XD reminds me of a time the whole marching band I was in just gave up in the middle of a parade( I mean we picked it back up, but for a minute there we all said, fuck it) good stuff

iain mcmanus

dustin is going to shoot a school up if he gets anymore abuse lmao

Zorro

Justin just had a real life boss fight at 1:40 XD

From the time I spent in England, Tesco was more of a Seven Eleven style shop. Had groceries in addition to convenience goods, but wasn't nearly the size of a Target or a Wal-Mart. There might be bigger locations, but this could explain why they're abandoning game sales.

Cmon Colin, you're the last one to get on at people for being overly sensitive.... Chin up Dustin! We all appreciate you and there's nothing wrong with being sensitive. Colin's just an old, out of touch man at times💀😂

Playing FF16 and getting the falling star trophy. Anyone have problems with that? Ps5 crashed during the credits - had to replay to get the trophy. Game was great but I think I had 6 crashes total. Not good 🤨

2023-07-29 18:37:46 In terms of the Tesco talk, writing’s been on the wall for a while with that, sections for games have never been huge in the Tesco Superstores, but over the last few years definitely shrunk, but in Tesco Extras (the really big ones) they usually had separate PlayStation, Nintendo, and Microsoft sections that were a fairly decent size. They don’t stock games in Tesco Express, which is like the little Tesco, more of a large corner shop. I think it’s probably got to a point were originally they were maybe making a bit of money, maybe just breaking even, but I’d imagine they take a loss on games now. Supermarkets in the UK do tend to sell games cheaper than a lot of other places - imagine the idea is people come in to buy a game, and do their normal shopping as well. Haven’t bought a game at Tesco for years but just looked then, and for Demon’s Souls and the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, should have been £140 RRP, I paid £104 - that was with an employee discount that’s usually 10%, but then they do these Clubcard deals, and it stacked, so I imagine they lost money in that sale. The other day I got Pikmin 4 from Asda, another UK supermarket, and it cost £40, as far as I’m aware that was the cheapest you could buy a Pikmin 4 boxed copy in the whole of the UK. Imagine all of the big supermarkets in the UK (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s) will stop stocking games eventually. Peace out.

Dude, some people just don't take teasing very well, even if it's good natured, and that's perfectly okay. Gotta know your people better. God that was painful to sit through.
