Sony finds itself in a pickle, or so it seems from the outside. With ever-burgeoning development costs comes the reality that new IP is an increasingly-risky endeavor. The safer and more reliable route, it could be argued, is in doubling-down on what works. And let's be real: Guerrilla-developed Horizon works. The two core games have sold 33 million units combined across PS4, PS5, and PC. The question, though, is how much does Horizon work? Could a good thing become a bad thing through simple repetition? This week, we discuss the future of Horizon (not to mention the past of Killzone) via reporting from an enlightening panel conducted with the leadership of Guerrilla, and we're forced to confront a reality where Horizon never truly disappears. Other notable news this week includes the retirement of legendary Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells, The Last of Us' ridiculously successful run of Emmy nominations, Sony's new investments into live service, and more. Inquiries from the audience end the show, as usual. What does SEGA's unionization mean for the future of industry labor? Can 2D games simply be too difficult for some people to handle? Is D&D more nerdy than anime? If you had to stop at a gas station right now, what would be your go-to snack and drink choices?

Keep up the great work, I love when I see an episode it 4:30+ long!

Ember's Arcade

Ahhhhh, yeah. 4 hours and 38 minutes long? We are eating well, my friends.

Forrest Hunter

Shout out to Coyote Peterson and his exaggerated screams of agony, haha

Just looking at the timestamps… No FTC talk?

Love HZD and HFW. I don’t understand why having options is a negative. You wanna watch a Horizon show, sure, wanna keep playing games then you got that too. Tired of it all? Don’t engage Lol.

Jared Ketner

Colin, you mentioned that Final Fantasy XVI is too long and that it's well beyond the 40 hours it takes to beat other older classic FF games. According to the How Long to Beat website, it's right around the same length (maybe a hair longer) for beating the main story and doing some side quests. This is a fairly accurate website and it reflects what my friend group has experienced as well. I do agree it's a little long but I just wanted to point out that on average it seems to be similar length to some of the great FF games. Also didn't catch your actual play time. I think you were about to mention it but Chris commented on the hunts and you followed up on that.

Zack

Guys. Make double gatefolds of the live shows

Zack

Could double as a live album and a vinyl exclusive

Noah Friscopp

People be fuckin’ all kinds of bears and stuff in the Forgotten Realms man.

Otacon_Ocelot

Yo will you guys make tank tops? I need black and white sacred symbols and Punching up tank!

Cyprus Davis

New Sacredy Symboly!

Dylan Michael

Dustin you should just buy the Tomba physical edition with no guilt.

NotYurRealDad

Interviewing Matt Stoller might be an opportunity for Colin to talk to breaking points on the Saudi government in the future.

AllTooEasy_

This intro is the most scatterbrained and all over the map I’ve heard the crew. I don’t hate it, just very noticeable.

You think bears are bad... In Witcher 1, Geralt can romance a monster.

lazer_josh

Oooo vinyl! I love that, hearing Ramon write full versions of all the LSM songs, a vinyl podcast episode, all of this fucking rules.

Jared Ketner

Colin you mentioned a jersey number retired across multiple sports. I don't know of any number like that but in baseball, number 42 is retired across all teams to honor Jackie Robinson.

Context Should Matter

In D&D demons are literally having sex with humans and creating hooved human/demon hybrid babies. I am not condoning any crazy stuff in the game but the option was obviously a joke. You aren't actually seeing a cutscene of the bear play out. They really took the "any press is good press" motto and ran with it. There are plenty of other demon and elf people you can do it with in the game you deviants.

Michael Mashpotato

I ordered stuff from Limited Run a year ago and still haven’t received my items. They’re the worst.

Ryan

Oh man, I bet Collins rumble watch history is something

Hidari Shotaro

I honestly thought the Twisted Metal trailer was a lot of fun. It can cement itself with general audiences as a sillier Mad Max adventure. Don't have high expectations but I will be there at the premiere.

gnawtyFOX

You guys are off your rails 😂 Well done

Completely agree with Chris about Insomniac constantly teasing Resistance. It drives me nuts! I just want a remastered trilogy on PS5!! Also want to mention that I had never played a FPS before the 2008 E3 that promoted Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 big time. I became huge fans of both franchises!

Big titty drinker

I love the commitment to the horizon franchise. All the haters can stand down.

Zackery Parkerson

I know Tell ‘Em Steve Dave did the vinyl-only episode, but that’s the only other podcast I can think of. You guys should definitely do it. Such an awesome idea.

Jacob R.

Hey all, Worth noting that ‘XR’ is generally used as a catchall term for virtual reality, augmented reality, and related technologies. So their ‘XR’ endeavors might mean a variety of things!

Big titty drinker

Dustin is way off the mark on how horizon fans feel about that game. That’s basically him projecting how HE feels about that game based on his fanboyism for elden ring. Most horizon fans loved that game. Again I think you guys get into a bit of an echoe chamber and project your personal feeling of your groups on to everyone else. Dustin is definitely out of touch in terms of what a lot gamers like and want in my opinion. Like let’s not forget the sentiment regarding god of war before its release and what actually happened. Sony is a business at the end of the day. They are doubling down on horizon because it’s clearly doing well commercially for them. This insistence that most people don’t like it or not high on it is kinda funny and a little tone deaf.

Zander

Monster energy drink slander went a little too far. The rule with energy drinks is never go with the basic flavor. OG Monster is trash, White Monster is amazing.

Peter Jansen

The show has already been on a hot streak and this may be the best episode ever. Keep it up gents!

Fate of Atlantis, which a masterpiece in the classic adventure genre, proves you don't need Harrison Ford in your Indiana Jones game. Hell you are probably better off with a talented impersonator than having Ford himself phone it in.

Tyler Kaminski

I didn’t interpret that as him saying fans of horizon were disappointed, but that everyone wasn’t super high on it, which I feel the same way. It certainly didn’t seem to have the same “moment” that god of war or last of us has for instance. I do agree with the business sense does demand more exploration of the IP, but I do also feel that this franchise feels to be a notch below some other Sony IP in stickiness with non Sony hardcore players. I did love the game, I just didn’t hear much about it, but that could also just be from elden ring absorbing all the attention at the time.

Big titty drinker

But that’s my point. He seems to think that because there is a vocal group that really dislikes the game Sony is some how “digging their heels in “ as if the they are trying to force feed it to people. We are getting more horizon because it’s one of the highest selling franchises ever for PlayStation which means the vast majority of ps fans like it. I just think he lets his personal echoe chamber and taste really cloud his judgement of the games reception. Like sure it isn’t gow or TLOU but context matters. Those games are from Ip that have been popular FOREVER or from extremely prestigious studios. Horizon is a new Ip and does that well with nothing else but the games really pushing it.

The Devmeister

Monster Ultra Zero in all flavours is amazing - STAND DOWN!!

1 of the most fun openings in a while.

By the end of last generation, MCC became Xbox’s best “exclusive” and still is now. Such a shame Infinite not only sucks but also nuked 3/4 of MCCs player base.

Adam Barnes

Dustin just lost so much respect. Red Bull is fucking heinous, you ass. Monster is way better

larry Seitz

Dustin go outside and touch grass, you are so chronically online its absolutely affecting your input on the podcast limited it already is, way to sensitive to comments and trying to always play the holier-than-thou person is not hitting the way you think it is... love you just want you to be better because I know you can 😘

Tyler

CHRIS DOESNT KNOW WHO TOM BROKAW IS?!

Tyler

DUSTIN EITHER?! Colin…

Dustin Furman

You have to be more specific with this feedback because I have no idea what you’re referencing.

Robert Graham

Looooove the vinyl idea. Would definitely buy.

Chris B

Somebody needs to tell Dustin that brokaw wasn’t on cable

Joshua Jones

The LRG thing is so dumb. Cara Lynn got fired, people get fired for all kinds of reasons. Buy it or don’t, don’t keep whining about it

I read this comment before watching so I was looking out for what you meant. Are you talking about the champagne glass comment? Other than that I have no idea what he’s done this episode to warrant that comment but you surely can’t think that champagne glass comment was serious?

Trapgunner

When it comes to FF16 I have to say I love it. I do wonder how many goddamn times I am gonna have to unnecessarily push a door open with R2 though.

ByWatterson

Chris you're way off on sidequest dialogue. You're missing some of the most impactful world-building and texture, especially regarding how the world treats the Branded.

Alex

I can't wait for Final Fantasy 17 to be made in the same vein as Baldur's Gate 3.

Anonymous

Dustin and Chris just parrot whatever they read on forums and discord about F16. It’s cringe worthy. Also, Chris used the word mid to describe FF16. More cringe. You’re adults. Not teens in NeoGaf. Get rid of these people, Colin.

MISZCZOGRZMOT

So I platinumed every KZ game but KZ2, since it required you to be in the top % of MP players in a given week, and I've played Resistance 2(another unobtainable MP trophy - getting 10000 kills in ranked matches), and platinumed R3. Here's my take: Kz1 was decent, if a bit average, 6-7/10. KZ2 looked and played better than any shooter on PS3 when it released, and KZ3 was even better (though much shorter). This was the time when devs started utilizing Cell's SPUs, and you just couldn't find a shooter with similar level of graphics, post-processing effects, depth of field on the weapons, etc. I've played the campaign in Kz2 multiple times, same with KZ3 - it was a gritty WWII shooter at heart, with good gameplay, and pretty good AI. When it comes to Resistance games released at that time - I'm sorry, but they're not even in the same league when it comes to gameplay or graphics. Honestly even the story in Resistance never got anywhere - the premise is cool, but it just never got past the introduction of the main threat. Both KZ3 and R3 released in the Move/3D era of the PS3, and both suffered for it in the SP length and overall polish, but it's R3 that didn't play any sound for me during the game's ending, and had other annoying bugs. Oddly enough I had a similar audio bug when I platinumed R&C Rift Apart recently - Ratchet's or Clank's voices didn't play for me during the outros at all (and the game probably already received its final patches at this point - give or take a month ago). KZ Shadowfall looked amazing, but it was just terrible, and I'm not surprised it killed the franchise. Almost every level was a different game (from a shooter, to a stealth game, to vehicle combat game, to asteroids, to jumping from crate to crate in space, etc), you had huge empty, maze-like, open spaces that you couldn't navigate without a waypoint, and introducing infinitely respawning enemies in an FPS was a very dumb decission. I'm pretty sure AngryJoe gave it a 4/10, and as a fan of the franchise I have to agree - it was a chore to play, and after finishing the campaign, I couldn't even be bothered to check the MP, or to get the trophies. Kz Mercenaries was one of Vita's best games, period, and the isometric Kz shooter on PSP was decent from what I remember, too.

The staple sketch quotes for my wife and I are (the best sketch) “Santa brought it early!” and for some reason “the bones are their money and so are worms”

Nikitas Gagas

Be sure to do the Torgal side quests. I very rarely get a genuine laugh out of a video game but there is a line at the end of the first Torgal side quest that made me laugh out loud.

Greg Hommel

Chris, it’s easy to dismiss Killzone and say you understand why they let it go when you haven’t played any of the five titles. If you had your PS2 plugged in to your phone line playing Killzone multiplayer before Halo was even a thing it isn’t so simple. If you had seen Killzone 2 blow the graphical expectations out of the water to become the best looking console FPS at the time, it wouldn’t be that easy to understand the franchise being abandoned at a time when Sony has zero FPS shooters. It’s literally money in the bank if they ever go back to it.

Thomas Adamson

I enjoy how Colin doesn’t like spoiling the Last of Us and Uncharted, but spoiled the absolute fuck out of Baten Kaitos, 2 months before the collection comes out.

David P

You guys really need to give a heads up for spoilers. I'm not even saying don't discuss them, just be better. I don't need to echo the Baten Kaitos collection comment above. I don't buy the "it's 20 years old" argument for any game frankly but I think agreeing to disagree is fine if there are warnings. There's a lot of picking and choosing around what old games are okay get spoiled or not. I'm constantly playing older games for the first time.
