Xbox Finally WINS - Is The Activision Deal Done?! | Defining Duke, Episode 132

Well, it’s finally happened. Since January of 2022 it has been an absolute bloodbath, but now we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the Activision Blizzard deal. With the FTC vying for a preliminary injunction that would effectively lead to the death of this deal, the two opposing forces did battle in court. Following Microsoft's victory, the FTC has moved to appeal the decision as this saga continues. As the July 18th deadline quickly approaches, it's very possibly that by the next Defining Duke episode that we'll finally turn the page on this long winded chapter in Xbox history. Naturally, we had to tap an expert on the shoulder for all this and who better to ask all our crazy questions than Hoeg Law? Joining us, we go through the FTC's appeal process, the ongoing negotiations with the CMA, potential console exclusivity, Game Pass content, and so much more. It's Hoeg's first time back in the realm of the Dukes since December so be sure to give him a warm welcome! Furthermore, we get into the Xbox x IGN indie showcase which displayed a strong amount of diversity as Xbox seems to do of late. We also dig into Starfield's absolutely bonkers PC specs and get to the bottom of some uncertainties surrounding the game. Cog is such an upstanding dude, handled this situation with Jaffe as a gentleman, a lot we can all learn from him being humble. That being said, situation still smells rotten - no reason for Jaffe to say what he said in the first place and no reason for it to be generally excused by LSM.

These thumbnails keep getting better

I don't feel he said anything wrong, it's perfectly understandable to question an "influencers" relation to a corporate executive, it's important to have that transparency so you can know where the influence is really coming from. Them censoring Jaffe about it only would've fueled conspiracy theories that there was something there to hide.

A news organization being buddy, buddy with people and companies they're supposed to cover is very troubling. It leads to corruption and dishonestly. Which is why the corporate news is seen as very untrustworthy. For example, Bill Gates gives them lots of money to get favorable coverage.

And of course the FTC has decided to appeal, throwing good money after bad, just hopefully not 68 bil worth 🤔

I laughed so hard at the thumbnail! Great job!

I heard what Jaffe said and just finished listening to this new episode. And honestly, I didn’t used to think they had too much of a bias, but it’s worth considering the fact that the hosts of this particular podcast, who are buddy-buddy with Microsoft execs, are 100% rooting for Microsoft in the merger story almost every regard with no real concern for consolidation in the industry. Jaffe’s comments definitely made me notice the little things. For example when the crew started cracking up in glee when discussing the potential for Microsoft to shut Sony out and make COD and other titles exclusive in 10 years after appeasing regulators. Like is that something they find joy in? Weird behavior and a pretty bad look. Still, enjoyable podcast and great to see Hoeg back and at it.

Probably my favourite episode you guys have done. Matty masterfully steering the ship throughout, Cog maturely addressing the elephant in the room and asking all the right questions when it came to the FTC trial and of course, Hoeg dropping the most balanced wisdom you’re going to find. Great work lads. #DDHoeg
