Endless Horizons | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast, Episode 263

Sony finds itself in a pickle, or so it seems from the outside. With ever-burgeoning development costs comes the reality that new IP is an increasingly-risky endeavor. The safer and more reliable route, it could be argued, is in doubling-down on what works. And let's be real: Guerrilla-developed Horizon works. The two core games have sold 33 million units combined across PS4, PS5, and PC. The question, though, is how much does Horizon work? Could a good thing become a bad thing through simple repetition? This week, we discuss the future of Horizon (not to mention the past of Killzone) via reporting from an enlightening panel conducted with the leadership of Guerrilla, and we're forced to confront a reality where Horizon never truly disappears. Other notable news this week includes the retirement of legendary Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells, The Last of Us' ridiculously successful run of Emmy nominations, Sony's new investments into live service, and more. Inquiries from the audience end the show, as usual. What does SEGA's unionization mean for the future of industry labor? Can 2D games simply be too difficult for some people to handle? Is D&D more nerdy than anime? If you had to stop at a gas station right now, what would be your go-to snack and drink choices? Born-Blind

Just in time for the weekend!

Stinkling

Horse flies are also FREAKING MASSIVE btw, like you will KNOW when its not a normal fly. The ones in Ontario Canada can almost look like a bumble bee, big old boys.

Tristen Wilbers

An hour in and, as Chris said, this is a schizophrenic episode and I'm all here for it. The vibes are immaculate.

Meatball

Colin and the crew have been FEELING IT lately! I'm loving it. Have a great weekend, all!

Wow, very disappointed in Colin. He’s going to interview Matt Stoller? Really? The man is a complete clown. This great legal mind called a federal judge a “boomer moron”. You can do much better than this for an alternative perspective. This is just lazy. https://twitter.com/matthewstoller/status/1678781659255291906

Sealegs

Very disappointing that you have someone publically calling the judge a moron and idiot and lashing out like a child on Twitter to comment on the legal merits of ABK. I think it's disrespectful and unprofessional to personally target a public servant of over a decade. It's fine to disagree, but you should be able to behave professionally.

Anonymous

If somehow this is the best you can find I think that may speak a lot to the credibility of the counter argument. The man has zero credibility.

Sealegs

Yeah, lol ridiculous - please stick with Hoeg… it's embarrassing.

Michael Mashpotato

Shout out to Modern Vintage Gamer and the Carbon Engine.

Joe B

Matt Stoller to come make his very weak legal argument on the show. Definitly a low point for guests on Last Stand.

Anonymous

And to be clear, have a dissenting option. Colin argues that being for the deal is “conservative”. I disagree with that. It’s mainstream legal opinion whether we like it or not, but anyways, i love alternative point of views from my own. I’ll listen normally. But not someone like this. By the way, this is just one example of what he is… he has a very long history of being a nut job.

Michael Thew

Am I the only one that thought that Bradley Cooper could be a good Indy

bix hutch

Turns out the experts were right all along. If there was a solid legal argument you'd think someone somewhere would have made it. CMA went with the cloud and it's own government is asking them what the fuck they were smoking. The EU came out and said the CMA didn't even get their numbers right lol. Is Xbox gunna make some friends in Japan next?

I'm 75% done with Final Fantasy 16, and I don't really see how it's 'so good'. I'm giving it time by watching the cutscenes but the constant interruptions really holds it back. Oh well, we move on.

Anonymous

Zero chance you’ve been mistaken for a Muslim Colin. Perhaps it’s cause you’re in the wrong side of the mason dixon

On aswrll

Fuck this

NeO JD

Combat, story, characters. It’s really solid but it also has a bunch of decisions in it that make me wonder WHY? Chris nailed how I feel about it.

Sealegs

Forza horizon 5 is more than good, wish Sony had a driving game that was as fun. I belive that game also won IGNs game of the year for 2021.

Mr someone

A story with moments of absolute brilliance, fun combat, an interesting world and a phenomenal soundtrack are what make it so good. Although the half baked RPG elements, mind numbingly boring side quests and a lack of overall challenge do hinder the experience, which is a shame.

PRETENTIEUX

It is not in any way inherently unethical to eat meat. Sacrifice is built into life from the beginning. The strongest figures in history all understood sacrifice and duty. Nobody likes the way that animals are treated which is the only way you can get to claims that it is unethical to purchase and eat them. I would contend that what you do with the energy you are given from the food that you eat is vastly more important ethically than what the food actually is or where it comes from.

PairOfShuse

Only thing I want to say for now about FF16 - I’m 77 percent of the way through, have been doing all hunts and side quests - how do people praise the battle system so much. It’s serviceable but there literally isn’t any elemental weaknesses to take advantage of even though the game is built narratively on eikons of different elements. They could also have changed things up by having each eikons abilities have different advantages and disadvantages (ex. Fire = greater strength but slower, Wind = faster, weaker, better breaks stun gauge damage, Earth = better power and defense but slower and little stun gauge damage). Just very very basic

Anonymous

I feel like I'm the only one who likes the side quests in ff16 😅

PairOfShuse

Uhhh, I don’t need to watch combo videos to understand anything. I know how the system works, it’s just entirely basic without adding in elemental weaknesses and more interesting modifiers with changing elements. They could have done a lot more with the combat system

DDTJOESTAR

I think there are instances in FF16 where they could’ve borrowed the Secret Mission formula of DMC as well, where it does test your skill a bit in ways like reaching a certain area in an amount of time with Garuda abilities, or defeating enemies within an amount of time with set Eikons that are unlocked at that point in the main story. There are things that likely would’ve required more work on how the abilities function though so I suppose we got what we have. From what I hear of Arcade Mode that’s where some of these ideas went but not to the full extent I lend.

Gene Park

lol colin shoutout to me about our predator catcher obsession. yes i had to follow dads against predators to rumble. their older videos are also uncensored too so you see them just straight up fight some pedos.

Anonymous

This is ignoring the fact that for most people eating meat is completely optional and you can get that same energy from other foods. The reason it is unethical is because you are doing it because you want to not because you need to.

Mr someone

That would've been way better side content than the side quests we got. Even a Bloody Palace equivalent would've been a cool addition.

Mr someone

In regards to the Stranded Deep trophy discussion, Cuphead has something similar where if someone joins a local co-op game with someone who already has certain trophies unlocked they can get them too without any effort at all. Really pisses me off considering how challenging that platinum was for me and many others, and the fact that the platinum unlock % is higher than it should be.

PRETENTIEUX

This is a straight-up lie. You cannot get the same energy and nutrients from other foods. Meat is the most important part of any diet. If you are a vegan you are handicapping yourself. There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. As I said: sacrifice is built into life from the start. It's pretty idiotic to think that you can get the same thing from plants that grow out of the ground that you can get from eating an animal which is made from the same things as we are.

Pyo

was away whole weekend but never too late!!!

Jordan Falduto

Can I just say how I love how Chris is shoehorning in how barbaric it is to eat meat and participate in carnism in every episode? Based.

Germanos

Please don't let Chris "bully you" into not standing up for something, even if your impact on the thing you are against, is minimal. We cannot live 100% ethical lives, but if everyone is those cases where he/she can make a choice, would do it, even for the smallest things, this would make a change. People to try to talk you out of it because you are doing some other things elsewhere - this is them just trying to feel better about their lack of restraint. Even if it is small, do it. Be awesome 💪

Rich Price

It’s not necessarily the eating meat that’s barbaric, it’s the way it’s farmed.

Jamie Collyer

Regarding the Vinyl idea - there's a Rooster Teeth podcast called f**kface that has already floated the idea of an exclusive show, though I can't remember off hand if they've already put them out there. edit: yep, already done and dusted - https://store.roosterteeth.com/products/f-kface-episode-16-vinyl

Germanos

As someone who worked as a producer at a game studio, I would suspect with confidence that both live service games were shown to (in priority): get attention to possible hires, show-off to stakeholders and get insight data into the social reaction to visual tone of the direction. All those are normal and something we see not only in video games when it comes to software. And btw. Chris's part about the decision to go for live service games was outstanding. That is really clever analysis on his part right there.

Germanos

In an industry where gamers are being endorsed to spend less on video games (will not point fingers, but the company is often linked with the color green) and budgets skyrocketing, unions will only make it much, much harder for the economy of video games. Unions are for me an escape-card for mediocrity. If you are fucking good at what you are doing and constantly push your carrier, skills and knowledge, you don't need a union to "help you" - you make the calls.

Gooch Gobbler

Man if the vinyl was cheap or came with a bunch of extras I would be so down for that. Maybe consider doing an etching of the sacred logo on one side?

Sena

There are plinths with time attack trials (using 1 eikon type of things) scattered around the world as well. These are separate from the arcade mode.

RU46N2 (REY)

Also torn about the Gex Limit Run thing. Been saying it for a long time they should make a new Gex Ala ratchet and clank rift apart. Take care guys.

Luke Robert

Very strange question but … what colour is your office Colin? I’m busy painting and it’s the colour I’m after.

Cun

lmao that delayed cork pop SFX caught me way off guard
