Domination of the Kingdom | Punching Up: A Nintendo Podcast, Episode 2

The release of a new Zelda feels like an Olympic-level event. This release feels a little different due to the total domination not only in sales but also in cultural saturation. It feels like everyone is playing Tears of the Kingdom, and it makes sense since it sold 10 million copies in just three days. So, while we dive deep into the game once again, we are also lucky enough to have Gene, who interviewed the man behind the game, Eiji Aonuma, to tell us about the experience of interviewing a legend. In addition, three classic GBA games are being added to Nintendo Switch Online! Of course, with this being a Last Stand show, we filled the episode chock-full of listeners' write-ins. What makes the NES and SNES timeless? Is using the item duplication glitch in Zelda okay? What should fans of the show call themselves? We're just getting started on this show, so get in and hit play! MERCH: https://laststandmedia.store Follow the hosts on Twitter! I'm too early that I haven't received my email. Let's go!

Tonys_Always_Write

Keep cursing as is, I appreciate any self-regulation, but ultimately it's an LSM show. The dukes tried this it came off as really awkward and stilted, podcasts are meant to be top of mind, so it would be weird if you guys have to think about what you are going to say every word.

Cormac

Keep fucking cursing and don’t fucking stop please

vernontk

Very good to hear there will be Fire Emblem representation on this show ⚔️🐉

Born-Blind

Hahahaha I've actually changed my tune on having a "kid friendly" show. I'm too big a fan of Stand Up to be able to hide individual words from my kid anyway...

Another great show! Nice work everyone, and great job Dustin as host! You're doing awesome, man! Tell those Duck Dynasty boys to Quack Down! lol

Cameron

I had a switch a couple of years ago and got rid of it but all of this TOTK talk has me wanting to play. Maybe I should wait until the new switch comes out? Decisions, decisions…

Cash

They'll definitely make some DLC, so I think it'll be fine to wait and play it all at once, even if it ends up not being upgraded on the new switch

Michael

Not getting emails for new posts, anyone else?

Cameron

So BOTW had DLC? And that’s a good point about even if it doesn’t get upgraded but a more powerful switch will bode well for a new generation of games.

Anthony A.

Happened to me once before. I uninstalled app and reinstalled it. Started working again.

Denver Walker

Gene is so fucking cool!

Jacob Abraham

Wearing a Nintendo shirt on the Nintendo podcast is perfect! You don’t wear another teams jersey when going to your home team’s game. You are doing the right thing.

Dylan Michael

Damn Gene liking sonic is his first L. 😭. Jk

88, the Big Cat

Dagan's Mario question was a fun exercise. What about a Mario game like KH, where Mario bounces between franchises/universes and teams up with their respective characters, battling a threat that effects everyone?

Brent

I feel a kinship with Dustin because I’m born and raised in western Pennsylvania (Indiana, PA) and with Gene because I lived on Oahu for 5 years. Small world indeed.

NecrumOddBoy

I agree. I'd like to see the SMASH-level of crossovers happen in other games. The Mario Sports/Kart series stay internal to the franchise but why? I think we really need a SMASH BROS PARTY. This would be a great crossover title having Mario, Link, Samus, etc... compete on different IP-themed boards and mini-games.

Sindri

Stinkers is more or less already taken as the name of a fanbase. Drew Gooden calls his fans his Little Stinkers.

Surge!

I still think of the first Zelda game as the best the series has ever offered. It embraces an open world approach better than most, where you're left to your own intuition to figure out the world, and you can do some wild things as a result of that, like stumbling across the final dungeon by pure accident.

The original NES LOZ is often overlooked, but it’s one of my favorites as well. I love being dropped into the world and left alone to explore without interruption. I try to run through it once every few years. I like to look at rankings in context. For example, the quality of TOTK in 2023 doesn’t detract from the quality of ALTTP in 1992. The same goes for the original LOZ in ‘86/‘87, which I would say is the 2nd best game of that generation (behind SMB3).

Name pronunciation nailed 👌, made my week!

this is why i dont understand colins whole "these new games arent zelda" they both literally went back to the design of the original NES game.

DB Cooper

I 100% don't wear the same bands shirt that I'm seeing live, lol Iron Maiden (and some others now) wearing their own merch seems so weird to me.

Giovanni D'Amico

I've been playing my Switch a lot less in the last year+, but this show is still an absolutely wonderful listen. Dustin is a terrific host, Micah brings a great perspective and adds variety to the preferences and What We're Playing, it's great to hear Dagan wax poetic and analytical, and Gene deserves all of the praise for not only what he brings in personality but for adding an interesting wrinkle with his "breaking the game" stories. I'm loving this.

Malcolm G

Yall should do an episode about why Nintendo seemingly hates competitive smash bros. Would love to hear some insight on why we will never get another Melee

Dustin H

The main design behind Korok seeds, other than keeping the player engaged, are that they act as breadcrumbs to let you know which areas of the map you’ve thoroughly explored. I relied on this heavily in BOTW, it was great for my playstyle and idiosyncrasies. As you guys mentioned, they’re not really a collectible in the Assassins Creed get all the chests kind of way. In TOTK they’re still breadcrumbs but they seem to lean a bit more into helping you think about your abilities. There are additional breadcrumbs in TOTK that share the load, like caves. Love the little check mark btw.

I was thinking this same thing. You could have Smash Bros Adventure where Mario has to save the Nintendo-verse. He could visit Splatoon land with his Sunshine water blaster, then go to Kirby land with Cappy, kid Icarus he'd have raccoon suit, ice climbers his ice flower and mallet, fire emblem could be Mario rabbits style, etc. THAT would be awesome!
