Words Like Violence Break the Silence | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast, Episode 256

We've waited so long for a fresh PlayStation Showcase that it came as a bit of a shock to be sitting there watching a new one. Yet we did just that, and frankly, we were left feeling a little bit underwhelmed. It's not to say that potentially-amazing games weren't shown-off, because they were. Out of the 34 titles seen, many of them looked great. But a lack of a truly meaningful first and second party presence coupled with gameplay scarce makes it's hard to feel too excited about what Haven or Firewalk are toiling away on when we somehow still don't have a release date for Spider-Man 2, when Factions remains as much of a mystery as it was before, when a predictable reliance on new PvP products nonetheless leaves some fans distressed. We take the time to go game-by-game, from Fairgame$ and Helldivers II right on through Marathon and Concord, covering all that the event had to offer. We also do a 'regular show' around that, touching on the other news from the week, with plenty of listener inquiries, too. Are you feeling better than you were pre-Showcase, PlayStation fans? As usual, it's likely just a matter of perspective. I’m so excited for Ultros. Niklas Åkerblad is doing the art for the game and he’s an amazing artist. He did a lot of the box art for hotline Miami

Great conversations as always. Loved the end subject personally as an older gamer in my fifties who willl never lose the passion and excitement for gaming. I came in to video games properly late in life, and have never looked back.

This is the first time in 10+ years that Xbox’s showcase can beat PlayStations showcase.

Been a long time listener/fan (conversation with colin and oreo review era kind of long) but Colins Zelda opinions are as ever facepalm worthy though he has every right to state how he feels. Look if you go into a game with the "I'm going to hate this" mindset, then yeah you will probably hate it, and find every little thing to nitpick and dislike. I'm not saying you HAVE TO like Zelda, but you are kind of setting yourself up for failure. A lot of people that didn't gel with BOTW are loving the new game. Sure the stamina, climbing in the rain, weapons breaking etc is all still there, but they give you the tools to overcome it, and having beaten the game i can say i only got stuck climbing in the rain ONCE. And my playthrough was 60 hours. It seems like such a shame to miss out on 2 of the best games this decade, and i totally respect you feel they aren't for you. But you should always go into something with an open mind, even if you don't think you will like it, you just might! I put off Life Is Strange for a long long time because i thought it wasn't for me at all, then when a friend gifted me a copy i sat their all night long and platted it, and its one of my fav games of all time! Just a little example ;) At the end of the day though, you gotta play what you know you will like, and if you really really feel something isnt for you, no amount of forcing yourself to enjoy it will work, but keeping an open mind can reveal some hidden gems and shocking revelations! Who knows, maybe you sit down to try it one day and go "damn i was wrong" and maybe not! Either way stay safe and happy gaming yall.

Such a disappointing showcase. Expected a lot more. If they’d labelled this as a State Of Play it would’ve been fine.

Zack Fair

Feel like we'll get release dates on spider-man etc come SGF

Luke Silletta

The showcase was disappointing. There was really no "oh shit!" moment. The amount of predictions that didn't happen is staggering. The lack of hard release dates is puzzling. Where is Factions? Where is Uncharted? Where is the PS5 Pro? Where is Bluepoint? Where is FF7 part 2? Where is Twisted Metal? Where is Astro? Where is Sucker Punch? Where is Bend? Where is Wolverine? Where is Death Stranding 2? Where is Steller Blade? Where is Silent Hill? Where is Castlevania? Its just unbelievable how little big things were actually shown.

K but MS-DOS Commander Keen was my shit.

Instead of singing along at the next concert you attend, just blast Sacred Symbols from your bluetooth speaker.

Alex

Agreed. I can only hope that some of those will be seen in the June games showcase.

Adeezydadon

Showcase was good. It was exactly what Sony needed to show the world. That we don’t have games. They only showed games that Microsoft also has access to in the future. Smart move Sony.

Yeah, overall, I would agree - this was a good Jim Ryan showcase that was disappointing due to my expectations. I feel like we are dealing with a different Playstation - one where they only need to trickle information for first party and second party. I'm hopeful for maybe a state-of-play / showcase / Geoff Keighly Game Awards announcement of some future games (hopefully TLoU: Factions/Dark Sides or w/e it's called). Thanks for the early podcast this week and the thoughts, as always.

Hey Sacred Symbols Crew - as someone who was eagerly watching the showcase for reasons to enter the PlayStation console ecosystem, I’m left very disappointed - I have no idea what the forward roadmap looks like other than SM2, Wolverine and DS2 - Seems like Sony’s focus going forward is GaaS, with 60% of their development budget going to them. I rarely play GaaS other than as palate cleansers - PS VR2 is interesting tech, but the lack of Sony studio support (other than Call of the Mountain) seems like they’re not even supporting it within a year of launch. Why should I consider a PS5 in 2023 (I have a Xbox Series X and pre-ordered the ROG Ally)?

Kevin Cooper

I dunno... I just can't shake the feeling that this whole downplaying of exclusives is still related to the Activision-Blizzard nonsense. Which, as a Playstation fan, is super annoying because we know that a lot of first-party games are ready to show a vertical slice. I think a score of B is accurate, but I still can't believe how often we saw the words: NOT ACTUAL GAMEPLAY.

Pyo

back from vacation, missed so much here!!

Gotta say after sitting on it that I think it was a good showcase. It was enlightening talking on the phone with my brother today. He isn’t on top of gaming news and leaks, and he called me freaking out saying, “did you know they are remaking metal gear and have you seen this new final fantasy?!” When you put it into context there were a lot of games at the showcase that I will be very excited to play.

After reflecting on the showcase I gotta say I think expectations and rumors got in the way and it was actually pretty good. The biggest complaint I see is too much CGI and not enough first party but more than half of the games had gameplay and 10+ console/exclusive games. I want to play most of those games but I don't know, I think I need to stay off twitter haha.

Jordan Knepp

*huffs copium* let us not forget Sony will have a presence at summer games fest where there will be way more viewers

Michael Kurzer

I agree with the write-in about Zelda. I don’t want Colin to play something against his will, but also the “facts” he knows about the game just aren’t true. Chris started to interrupt him there but then let it wait until a bit later. I’m glad he at least kinda started to correct him. That said, we’ll all be ok if Colin doesn’t play Zelda.

Sealegs

Disappointed about how little criticism you guys gave about the showcase… this was like an Xbox showcase, tons of cgi, no first party, no release dates.

Sealegs

Agree this showcase was so disappointing, wish they would have been far more critical- this felt like an Xbox show

Re: being too old to play video games. I'm 45 and have been playing them since the atari 2600 days. My dad is 73 and still playing his PS4. We all have different ways of how to unwind or whatever in our free time. I find playing video games the best way of escapism for me, much better than binging a bunch of episodes every night of whatever tv show you are into. But it is not really for me to say what I do is better than what anyone else chooses to do.

i was surprised to see you guys felt it was around an B, I would give it a C at least, i came out a bit feeling like meehh after seeing the show. opinions are opinions so everybody feels different. keep up the the good work
